It is one of the few books dealing exclusively with the subject, and is primarily intended as a reference for people in the nonwovens industry (industry and academic researchers, technical, marketing , and quality control personnel) and universities offering courses in filtration theory and practice and nonwovens technology. The book includes applications for gas, liquid, and engine filtration, and identifies the types of filter media used in these applications. The various separation technologies that can be achieved with nonwoven filter media are revealed and discussed. Theoretical presentation is based on flow through porous media, and is developed around a nonwovens or engineered fabrics orientation. - Presents the latest information on legislative, regulatory, environmental and sustainability issues affecting the nonwovens and filtration industries - Includes a comprehensive discussion of Computational Flow Dynamics (CFD) by Dr. George Chase, University of Akron, USA - Includes the latest Global and North American marketing statistics for filters and filter media prepared by Brad Kalil of INDA

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details three main topics: the screening and characterization of hydrocarbons from air, soil and water; technologies in the biodegradation of hydrocarbons; and the bioconversion of hydrocarbons for biofuel/chemicals, as well as recent developments in the remediation of hydrocarbons and their environmental benefits. The first section focuses on screening methods, qualitative and quantitative analysis of hydrocarbons from soil, air and water environments, speciation of hydrocarbons, and natural bioremediation strategies in such environments. The second section examines technologies for removing hydrocarbon contaminants from various environments, especially advanced technologies for the removal of hydrocarbons and in-situ and ex-situ remediation strategies and problems, as well as concrete case studies. The last section, covering the bioconversion of hydrocarbons for biofuel/chemicals, highlights the biochemicals and bioproducts developed from hydrocarbons, with a particular focus on biochemical and chemical technologies used to produce biopolymers, biofuel precursors and commodity chemicals from hydrocarbons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses ways to overcome the side effects of using hydrocarbon-based products as energy sources. Hydrocarbons produce raw crude oil waste of around 600,000 metric tons per annum, with a range of uncertainty of 200,000 metric tons per year. The various chapters in this book focus on approaches to reduce these wastes through the application of potential microbes, in a process called bioremediation. The book is a one-stop reference resource on the methods, mechanisms and application of the bio-composites, in the laboratory and field. Focusing on resolving a very pressing environmental issue, it not only provides details of existing challenges, but also offers deeper insights into the possibility of solving problems using hydrocarbon bioremediation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the fundamental principles of drilling en gineering, with the primary objective of making a good well using data that can be properly evaluated through geology, reservoir engineering, and management. It is written to assist the geologist, drilling engineer, reservoir engineer, and manager in performing their assignments. The topics are introduced at a level that should give a good basic understanding of the subject and encourage further investigation of specialized interests. Many organizations have separate departments, each per forming certain functions that can be done by several methods. The reentering of old areas, as the industry is doing today, particularly emphasizes the necessity of good holes, logs, casing design, and cement job. Proper planning and coordination can eliminate many mistakes, and I hope the topics discussed in this book will playa small part in the drilling of better wells. This book was developed using notes, comments, and ideas from a course I teach called "Drilling Engineering with Offshore Considerations." Some "rules of thumb" equations are used throughout, which have proven to be helpful when applied in the ix x / Preface proper perspective. The topics are presented in the proper order for carrying through the drilling of a well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each new generation of commercial aircraft produces less noise and fewer emissions per passenger-kilometer (or ton-kilometer of cargo) than the previous generation. However, the demand for air transportation services grows so quickly that total aircraft noise and emissions continue to increase. Meanwhile, federal, state, and local noise and air quality standards in the United States and overseas have become more stringent. It is becoming more difficult to reconcile public demand for inexpensive, easily accessible air transportation services with concurrent desires to reduce noise, improve local air quality, and protect the global environment against climate change and depletion of stratospheric ozone. This situation calls for federal leadership and strong action from industry and government. U.S. government, industry, and universities conduct research and develop technology that could help reduce aircraft noise and emissions-but only if the results are used to improve operational systems or standards. For example, the (now terminated) Advanced Subsonic Technology Program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) generally brought new technology only to the point where a system, subsystem model, or prototype was demonstrated or could be validated in a relevant environment. Completing the maturation process-by fielding affordable, proven, commercially available systems for installation on new or modified aircraft-was left to industry and generally took place only if industry had an economic or regulatory incentive to make the necessary investment. In response to this situation, the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, and the Environmental Protection Agency, asked the Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board of the National Research Council to recommend research strategies and approaches that would further efforts to mitigate the environmental effects (i.e., noise and emissions) of aviation. The statement of task required the Committee on Aeronautics Research and Technology for Environmental Compatibility to assess whether existing research policies and programs are likely to foster the technological improvements needed to ensure that environmental constraints do not become a significant barrier to growth of the aviation sector.

Book excerpt: This publication describes specifications and qualification test procedures for microfilter elements of the disposable cartridge type and, separately, the manufacturing requirements for new vessels for use in aviation jet fuel handling systems. It relates only to elements nominally rated within the particle size 1,0 - 5,0 microns and operating in an out-to-in flow format. This second edition has been prepared to align API and IP perspectives and clarify certain testing requirements. The test fuel chemistry has also been changed to align with the 5th edition of API/IP 1581 Specification and qualification procedures for aviation jet fuel filter/separators. It will provide an essential reference for all those involved in the design, manufacture, supply and operation of microfilters used in jet fuel handling systems.
