Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Obstruction of justice, the specter of impeachment, sexism at work, shocking revelations: Jill Wine-Banks takes us inside her trial by fire as a Watergate prosecutor. It was a time, much like today, when Americans feared for the future of their democracy, and women stood up for equal treatment. At the crossroads of the Watergate scandal and the women’s movement was a young lawyer named Jill Wine Volner (as she was then known), barely thirty years old and the only woman on the team that prosecuted the highest-ranking White House officials. Called “the mini-skirted lawyer” by the press, she fought to receive the respect accorded her male counterparts—and prevailed. In The Watergate Girl, Jill Wine-Banks opens a window on this troubled time in American history. It is impossible to read about the crimes of Richard Nixon and the people around him without drawing parallels to today’s headlines. The book is also the story of a young woman who sought to make her professional mark while trapped in a failing marriage, buffeted by sexist preconceptions, and harboring secrets of her own. Her house was burgled, her phones were tapped, and even her office garbage was rifled through. At once a cautionary tale and an inspiration for those who believe in the power of justice and the rule of law, The Watergate Girl is a revelation about our country, our politics, and who we are as a society.

Book excerpt: The secrets of Watergate were hidden by lies and deceit, and only one man had the right and the power to bring the White House to justice. In this book Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski for the first time explains and documents the details of the behind-the-scenes struggles for the White House tape recordings, the release of which culminated in a historic Supreme Court decision and the resignation of President Richard Nixon. It is the story of America's most traumatic experience in recent history, recounted by the man who knows the story best. The book identifies the maneuvers that created new legal precedents, making it must reading for everyone interested in courtroom proceedings. But it is also a story of grim thrusts and counterthrusts between Jaworski and his staff and the men who served the President: the inscrutable Fred Buzhardt, the suave soldier-diplomat Alexander Haig, the shrewd and energetic counsel for the President, James St. Clair. The book contains moments of great drama that have remained untold until now. There is the moment when Leon Jaworski first found evidence that could lead to the impeachment of the President -- and had to keep it secret while the President continued to proclaim his innocence. There is the moment when Alexander Haig, shocked to the core by what Jaworski was telling him, gazed out at the snow-covered White House grounds with tears in his eyes. There are moments when Jaworski found himself betrayed by broken promises, and decided that he had the right and the power to take the President to court. The book details the hard decisions made, the frightening gambles taken, the battle of the Supreme Court, the resignation of the President, the pardon. Above all, this is a story of personal courage. For when President Richard Nixon appointed Leon Jaworski as Special Watergate Prosecutor in November 1973, there was uneasy speculation in Congress that the new man from Texas was "the President's man." Newspapers editorialized against his appointment, and members of both the Senate and the House echoed their sentiments. Even the dedicated young lawyers of the Special Prosecution Force, who had seen their leader Archibald Cox stripped of his powers, were skeptical that Jaworski could do the job. Wasn't he a member of the Establishment, with easy access to the throne rooms of political and financial power? Wasn't he a political conservative? And old! How do you communicate with a man of sixty-eight? But Leon Jaworski quickly proved himself to be his own man. He always had been. A trial lawyer at age twenty, a prosecutor at the Nuremburg War Crimes trials, he had always championed the rights of society and the rights of the individual. Besides being President of the American Bar Association, he was a warm human being known to his peers as a brilliant legal strategist and tactician. And if his age worried his staff, he quickly bridged the gap of generations by his words and deeds. Leon Jaworski is a man who serves justice and his story of one of the greatest legal battles in American history makes unforgettable reading. - Jacket flap.

Book excerpt: This is the inside story of the Watergate trials. Written by the ultimate insider who helped change the course of history: William Merrill was the Special Prosecutor who sent the "plumbers" to jail. Not just any plumbers, but the "Nixon plumbers," hired by the White House to "stop leaks" by any means necessary. Officially, they were the Special Investigation Unit. Unofficially, they were the "dirty tricks squad," whose illegal actions eventually caused the President to resign his office. Bill Merrill prosecuted the plumbers. Here, more than thirty years later, he reveals how he did it. On September 4, 1971, two burglars -- later identified as E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy -- broke into the office of Lewis Fielding, a Beverly Hills psychiatrist, among whose patients was Daniel Ellsberg, a prominent antiwar activist who had recently released to the press the formerly top-secret "Pentagon Papers." On June 13, 1972, five burglars entered the offices of the Democratic National Committee, which were located in the Watergate complex in Washington, DC. Both of these crimes were eventually traced back to the "plumbers unit," which was directed by John Ehrlichman, President Nixon's top domestic aide. As he convincingly recounts, Merrill sought the job as Assistant Special Prosecutor for one reason: to bring these criminals to justice. In addition, as this revelatory account makes clear, he pursued that goal tenaciously. Merrill wrote this book in 1978, but never published it. Today, at the age of 83, he is confined to a VA hospital in Michigan, the victim of a debilitating stroke. In 1974, Merrill was mentioned in the media almost every day during the Watergate trials. Directing a team of attorneys and assistants, he constructed cases against all of the plumbers--and he won every case. "Watergate" continues to reverberate in the American consciousness today. Revelations that the White House had planned and carried out illegal acts fundamentally rocked the nation. In his response to these unprecedented crimes, William Merrill literally changed the course of history. This is his story.

The Watergate trials were a legal mess—and now, with the discovery of new documents that reveal shocking misconduct by prosecutors and judges alike, former Nixon staffer Geoff Shepard has a convincing case that the wrongdoing of these history-making trials was actually a bigger scandal than the Watergate scandal itself.

This book was released on 2019-01-21 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, the grand jury has conducted its work in secret. Secrecy prevents those under scrutiny from fleeing or importuning the grand jurors, encourages full disclosure by witnesses, and protects the innocent from unwarranted prosecution, among other things. The long-established rule of grand jury secrecy is enshrined in Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 6(e), which provides that government attorneys and the jurors themselves, among others, ﷿must not disclose a matter occurring before the grand jury.﷿Accordingly, as a general matter, persons and entities external to the grand jury process are precluded from obtaining transcripts of grand jury testimony or other documents or information that would reveal what took place in the proceedings, even if the grand jury has concluded its work and even if the information is sought pursuant to otherwise-valid legal processes. At times, the rule of grand jury secrecy has come into tension with Congress' power of inquiry when an arm of the legislative branch has sought protected materials pursuant to its oversight function. For instance, some courts have determined that the information barrier established in Rule 6(e) extends to congressional inquiries, observing that the Rule contains no reservations for congressional access to grand jury materials that would otherwise remain secret. Nevertheless, the rule of grand jury secrecy is subject to a number of exceptions, both codified and judicially crafted, that permit grand jury information to be disclosed in certain circumstances (usually only with prior judicial authorization). Perhaps the most significant of these for congressional purposes are (1) the exception that allows a court to authorize disclosure of grand jury matters ﷿preliminarily to or in connection with a judicial proceeding,﷿ and (2) the exception, recognized by a few courts, that allows a court to authorize disclosure of grand jury matters in special or exceptional circumstances. In turn, some courts have determined that one or both of these exceptions applies to congressional requests for grand jury materials in the context of impeachment proceedings, though there is authority to the contrary. Additionally, because Rule 6(e) covers only ﷿matters occurring before the grand jury, courts have recognized that documents and information are not independently insulated from disclosure merely because they happen to have been presented to, or considered by, a grand jury. As such, even if Rule 6(e) generally limits congressional access to grand jury information, Congress has a number of tools at its disposal to seek materials connected to a grand jury investigation. Prior Congresses have considered legislation that would have expressly permitted a court to authorize disclosure of grand jury matters to congressional committees on a showing of substantial need. However, in response to such proposals, the executive branch has voiced concerns that the legislation would raise due-process and separation-of-powers issues and potentially undermine the proper functioning of federal grand juries. These concerns may have resulted in Congress declining to alter Rule 6(e). As a result, to the extent Rule 6(e) constrains Congress' ability to conduct oversight, legislation seeking to amend the rules governing grand jury secrecy in a way that would give Congress independent access to grand jury materials may raise additional legal and pragmatic issues for the legislative branch to consider.

Book excerpt: Based on Nixon’s overlooked recordings, New York Times bestselling author John W. Dean connects the dots between what we’ve come to believe about Watergate and what actually happened Watergate forever changed American politics, and in light of the revelations about the NSA’s widespread surveillance program, the scandal has taken on new significance. Yet remarkably, four decades after Nixon was forced to resign, no one has told the full story of his involvement in Watergate. In The Nixon Defense, former White House Counsel John W. Dean, one of the last major surviving figures of Watergate, draws on his own transcripts of almost a thousand conversations, a wealth of Nixon’s secretly recorded information, and more than 150,000 pages of documents in the National Archives and the Nixon Library to provide the definitive answer to the question: What did President Nixon know and when did he know it? Through narrative and contemporaneous dialogue, Dean connects dots that have never been connected, including revealing how and why the Watergate break-in occurred, what was on the mysterious 18 1/2 minute gap in Nixon’s recorded conversations, and more. In what will stand as the most authoritative account of one of America’s worst political scandals, The Nixon Defense shows how the disastrous mistakes of Watergate could have been avoided and offers a cautionary tale for our own time.

Book excerpt: This title is the only book on the topic that includes the major primary sources for evaluation of what has and has not constituted an impeachable offense, including the documents on the investigation of President Clinton as they bear on impeachment. Impeachable Offenses presents the historical proceedings and precedents for impeachment in the U.S., leading up to the current investigation of President Clinton. Focusing on providing a clear understanding of what the Constitution says about impeachment and how its terms have been applied throughout our history, Impeachable Offenses gives readers the perspective they need to make informed decisions. In an easy-to-read style packed with fascinating detail, Impeachable Offenses explores the frequency and reasons impeachment articles have and have not emerged from House investigations in the past 200 years, allowing readers to form their own conclusions on the current case based on the historical record. Impeachable Offenses includes the historical detail and documents on each of the 16 times articles of impeachment have been drawn up, plus the outcome of those investigations that did not lead to impeachment. Impeachable Offenses also includes the entire catalog of potentially impeachable offenses in the Starr Report, the impeachment-related clauses from the Constitution, and a discussion of the Senate's trial procedures.
