In the era of Industry 4.0, technology is getting embedded more and more in the way ‘we learn, live, work, and play’. This progression is accelerating at a pace never seen before. Interdisciplinary and collaborative research across disciplines within the Technology domain and Management domain, and across the Technology-Management interface is opening up exciting new possibilities for solving problems whose solutions are beyond the scope of a single discipline, domain or practice, and helping to create a brave new world. The goal of this conference was to bring together scholars, researchers, consultants, and practitioners to share their interdisciplinary research and consultative work in Technology and Management. Selected papers were then peer-reviewed and authors were invited to present their work in the conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of three essays on applications of interdisciplinary research in operations management. The first essay addresses issues in healthcare. Our goal is to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of bevacizumab compared to the baseline treatment with only chemotherapy in recurrent/persistent and metastatic cervical cancer using recently reported updated survival and toxicology data. We developed a Markov model with 5 patient health states for both treatments. With data based on the Gynecologic Oncology Group 240 randomized trials and the 2013 MediCare Services Drug Payment Table and Physician Fee Schedule, we present monthly transition probabilities and cost data. Our results show that chemotherapy plus bevacizumab can delay progression, but incur more complications. The second essay lies at the interface between operations management and marketing. We aim to understand the tradeoffs in offering outlet stores. In particular, we study how much differentiation should be kept between the main and outlet stores from three perspectives: price, product and location. We find that an outlet store is more likely to be opened when travel sensitivity is lower or costs associated with it are lower. Moreover, offering an outlet store encourages the rm to improve the quality of the product sold in the main store as to reduce the cannibalization effect. We also observe that location differentiation has a substitution effect on quality and price differentiation. In the third essay, we study several operational challenges for the on-demand service platforms. We consider a situation when an on-demand service platform uses earning sensitive independent providers with heterogeneous reservation prices to serve its time and price sensitive customers with heterogeneous valuation of the service. We present a queueing model with endogenous supply and endogenous demand to model this on-demand service platform. Based on our analysis, we find that it is optimal for the platform to charge a higher price, pay a higher wage, and offer a higher payout ratio when the potential customer demand increases. We use a set of actual data from a large on-demand ride-hailing platform in numerical experiments to illustrate some of our main insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Sustainable Business prepares future business leaders to tackle the most crucial social and environmental issues of our time. This engaging textbook provides students with a comprehensive, balanced introduction to integrating sustainable business policies into all core business functions and processes. The text employs a qualitative-based learning process to help students understand how leadership, finance, accounting, risk management, marketing, supply chain management, and operations can be adapted to meet the sustainability goals of the 21st century. Looking at sustainable business from the managerial viewpoint, the fully-updated new edition explains how and why business is evolving due to increased consumer and regulatory pressure for sustainable performance. Business topics are first introduced in the same manner as traditional MBA programs, and then examined through the lens of sustainably. The text incorporates real-life examples of social and environmental leadership to demonstrate the efficacy of good sustainable business decisions, and illustrates the negative ramifications of outdated, purely economic-driven managerial decision-making. Influential concepts based on interdisciplinary research in sustainability are discussed in detail, and practical insights address how to turn policy into practice in the workplace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first critical history of interdisciplinary efforts and movements in the modern university. Interdisciplinarity—or the interrelationships among distinct fields, disciplines, or branches of knowledge in pursuit of new answers to pressing problems—is one of the most contested topics in higher education today. Some see it as a way to break down the silos of academic departments and foster creative interchange, while others view it as a destructive force that will diminish academic quality and destroy the university as we know it. In Undisciplining Knowledge, acclaimed scholar Harvey J. Graff presents readers with the first comparative and critical history of interdisciplinary initiatives in the modern university. Arranged chronologically, the book tells the engaging story of how various academic fields both embraced and fought off efforts to share knowledge with other scholars. It is a story of myths, exaggerations, and misunderstandings, on all sides. Touching on a wide variety of disciplines—including genetic biology, sociology, the humanities, communications, social relations, operations research, cognitive science, materials science, nanotechnology, cultural studies, literacy studies, and biosciences—the book examines the ideals, theories, and practices of interdisciplinarity through comparative case studies. Graff interweaves this narrative with a social, institutional, and intellectual history of interdisciplinary efforts over the 140 years of the modern university, focusing on both its implementation and evolution while exploring substantial differences in definitions, goals, institutional locations, and modes of organization across different areas of focus. Scholars across the disciplines, specialists in higher education, administrators, and interested readers will find the book’s multiple perspectives and practical advice on building and operating—and avoiding fallacies and errors—in interdisciplinary research and education invaluable.

Book excerpt: This book takes a forward-looking approach by bringing in research and contributions that facilitate in mapping the impact of AI and big data on businesses, the nature of work along with providing practical solutions for preparing the work, workplace, and the workforce of the future. Organizations globally have been experiencing immense transformation due to the reinvention and redefining of the business models due to the dynamic nature of the business environment. Looking at an organizational context, undeniably, the definition of ‘work’ and ‘organizations’ is genuinely changing. Artificial intelligence, big data, automation, and robotics are a few of those keywords that are seemingly entering the workplace and reshaping the way work is being done. Moreover, the transition that is being addressed herein not only focuses upon aspects that are operative within an organization like the organizational culture, team building, networking, recruitments, and so on but also aims to address the external aspects like supply chain management, value chain analysis, investment management, etc. Broadly, every single step that is now taken is intensely experiencing this impact upon its functioning. This book serves as a guide not just to the academia but also to the industry to adopt suitable strategies that offer insights into global best practices as well as the innovations in the domain.
