However, adequate amount of information about the motion type or the structure under deformation is not usually available. As a result, general assumptions have to be used for the employed model resulting in relatively inefficient and less robust systems due to inadequate constraints. This work presents a number of techniques that deal with the problems of spatiotemporal modeling of contours which assume the most general constraints in both spatial and temporal domains. The main application area of these techniques are analysis of medical images, especially ultrasound image sequences. The techniques introduced was tested by performing experiments on synthetic and challenging real world data showing their effectiveness and feasibility for practical use.

Book excerpt: Abstract: We have developed a deformable model that is capable of extracting and tracking the open contour shape. This model uses a complex Fourier shape descriptor parameterization to efficiently formulate the force that constraints the contour deformation, which follows a snake-like approach. This model has the symmetry in Fourier coefficient, which requires only half number of the coefficients compared to the previous model (the deformable model with the closed contour shape descriptor). The model was first applied to track the short-axis right ventricle wall motion. We have used images acquired by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI) due to its high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This model neglects the median septum boundary, and only extracts the right ventricle wall. The extracted data is compared with the manually segmented data. The error between the manually segmented contour and the contours segmented by our deformable model was found to be 1.5 pixels in 256 x 256 multi-phase-multi-slice short axis CMRI. We also employed this model to extract and track the wall motion of long-axis CMRI of left ventricle. The long-axis boundary reveals high curvature with a naturally open shape anatomy. In medical images, such a problem is quite challenging. However, our model extracted and tracked the epicardium and endcardium of the left ventricle boundary of the longaxis CMRI accurately. The average error between the manually segmented contour and automatically segmented contour is less than 2 pixels over a 256 x 256 pixel image. We have, then, used the spatio-temporal characterization of ventricular wall motion, obtained by our model, to classify Intra-ventricular dyssynchrony (IVD) in the LV (i.e. asynchronous activation of LV wall). We employ a popular statistical pattern recognition method based on Principal Component Analysis and Fisher's Linear Discriminant Analysis to develop a classifier. From a database of 55 patients, our classifier produced 89.1% correct classification performance with the long-axis LV data. This result shows the promise of improved IVD classification as contrasted with current criteria, which provided correct classification rate of just 64.7% on the same database.
