Book excerpt: The Seventh International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases (SSTD 2001), held in Redondo Beach, CA, USA, July 12{15, 2001, brought together leading researchers and developers in the area of spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal databases to discuss the state of the art in spatial and temporal data management and applications, and to understand the challenges and - search directions in the advancing area of data management for moving objects. The symposium served as a forum for disseminating research in spatial and temporal data management, and for maximizing the interchange of knowledge among researchers from the established spatial and temporal database com- nities. The exchange of research ideas and results not only contributes to the academic arena, but also bene ts the user and commercial communities. SSTD 2001 was the seventh in the series of symposia that started in Santa Barbara a dozen years ago and has since been held every two years, in Zurich, Singapore, Portland (Maine), Berlin, and Hong Kong. By 1999, the series had become well established as the premier international forum devoted solely to spatial database management, and it was decided to extend the scope of the series to also cover temporal database management. This extended scope was chosen due, in part, to the increasing importance of research that considers spatial and temporal aspects jointly.

Book excerpt: The book deals with the integration of temporal information in Geographic Information Systems. The main purpose of an historical or time-integrative GIS is to reproduce spatio- temporal processes or sequents of events in the real world in the form of a model. The model thus making them accessible for spatial query, analysis and visualization. This volume reflects both theoretical thoughts on the interrelations of space and time, as well as practical examples taken from various fields of application (e.g. business data warehousing, demographics, history and spatial analysis).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time and Relational Theory provides an in-depth description of temporal database systems, which provide special facilities for storing, querying, and updating historical and future data. Traditionally, database management systems provide little or no special support for temporal data at all. This situation is changing because: Cheap storage enables retention of large volumes of historical data in data warehouses Users are now faced with temporal data problems, and need solutions Temporal features have recently been incorporated into the SQL standard, and vendors have begun to add temporal support to their DBMS products Based on the groundbreaking text Temporal Data & the Relational Model (Morgan Kaufmann, 2002) and new research led by the authors, Time and Relational Theory is the only book to offer a complete overview of the functionality of a temporal DBMS. Expert authors Nikos Lorentzos, Hugh Darwen, and Chris Date describe an approach to temporal database management that is firmly rooted in classical relational theory and will stand the test of time. This book covers the SQL:2011 temporal extensions in depth and identifies and discusses the temporal functionality still missing from SQL. Understand how the relational model provides an ideal basis for taming the complexities of temporal databases Learn how to analyze and evaluate commercial temporal products with this timely and important information Be able to use sound principles in designing and using temporal databases Understand the temporal support recently added to SQL with coverage of the new SQL features in this unique, accurate, and authoritative reference Appreciate the benefits of a truly relational approach to the problem with this clear, user friendly presentation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights some of the unique aspects of spatio-temporal graph data from the perspectives of modeling and developing scalable algorithms. The authors discuss in the first part of this book, the semantic aspects of spatio-temporal graph data in two application domains, viz., urban transportation and social networks. Then the authors present representational models and data structures, which can effectively capture these semantics, while ensuring support for computationally scalable algorithms. In the first part of the book, the authors describe algorithmic development issues in spatio-temporal graph data. These algorithms internally use the semantically rich data structures developed in the earlier part of this book. Finally, the authors introduce some upcoming spatio-temporal graph datasets, such as engine measurement data, and discuss some open research problems in the area. This book will be useful as a secondary text for advanced-level students entering into relevant fields of computer science, such as transportation and urban planning. It may also be useful for researchers and practitioners in the field of navigational algorithms.

Book excerpt: In the world of data management, one of the most formidable challenges faced by academic scholars is the effective handling of spatiotemporal data within the semantic web. As our world continues to change dynamically with time, nearly every aspect of our lives, from environmental monitoring to urban planning and beyond, is intrinsically linked to time and space. This synergy has given rise to an avalanche of spatiotemporal data, and the pressing question is how to manage, model, and query this voluminous information effectively. The existing approaches often fall short in addressing the intricacies and uncertainties that come with spatiotemporal data, leaving scholars struggling to unlock its full potential. Uncertain Spatiotemporal Data Management for the Semantic Web is the definitive solution to the challenges faced by academic scholars in the realm of spatiotemporal data. This book offers a visionary approach to an all-encompassing guide in modeling and querying spatiotemporal data using innovative technologies like XML and RDF. Through a meticulously crafted set of chapters, this book sheds light on the nuances of spatiotemporal data and also provides practical solutions that empower scholars to navigate the complexities of this domain effectively.

Book excerpt: SSTD 2009 was the 11th in a series of biannual events that discuss new and exciting research in spatio-temporal data management and related technologies. PrevioussymposiaweresuccessfullyheldinSantaBarbara(1989),Zurich(1991), Singapore (1993), Portland (1995), Berlin (1997), Hong Kong (1999), Los An- les (2001), Santorini, Greece (2003), Angra dos Reis, Brazil (2005), and Boston (2007). Before 2001, the series was devoted solely to spatial database mana- ment, and called SSD. From 2001, the scope was extended in order to also accommodate temporal database management, in part due to the increasing importance of research that considers spatial and temporal aspects jointly. SSTD2009introducedseveralinnovativeaspectscomparedtopreviousevents. There was a demonstrations track which included ten presentations of systems related to the topics of interest. In addition to that, the event included a poster session with seven presentations of innovative research developed at an early stage. For the ?rst time in the SSTD series, the best paper of the symposium was awarded and a few high-quality papers were selected and the authors were invited to submit extended versionsof their work to a special issue of the Geo- formatica journal (Springer). Prior to the symposium, there was a two-day - vanced seminar, which hosted three half-day tutorials on state-of-the-art topics within spatio-temporal data management, held by distinguished international researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatio-temporal networks (STN)are spatial networks whose topology and/or attributes change with time. These are encountered in many critical areas of everyday life such as transportation networks, electric power distribution grids, and social networks of mobile users. STN modeling and computations raise significant challenges. The model must meet the conflicting requirements of simplicity and adequate support for efficient algorithms. Another challenge is to address the change in the semantics of common graph operations, such as, shortest path computation assuming different semantics, or when temporal dimension is added. Also paradigms (e.g. dynamic programming) used in algorithm design may be ineffective since their assumptions (e.g. stationary ranking of candidates) may be violated by the dynamic nature of STNs. In recent years, STNs have attracted attention in research. New representations have been proposed along with algorithms to perform key STN operations, while accounting for their time dependence. Designing a STN database would require the development of data models, query languages, and indexing methods to efficiently represent, query, store, and manage time-variant properties of the network. The purpose of Spatio-temporal Networks: Modeling and Algorithms is to explore this design at the conceptual, logical, and physical level. Models used to represent STNs are explored and analyzed. STN operations, with an emphasis on their altered semantics with the addition of temporal dimension, are also addressed.
