Book excerpt: In the past decade, the coalbed natural gas (CBNG) industry in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming has experienced pronounced growth. However, production of natural gas has been accompanied by concerns regarding the disposal of groundwater produced with the gas. In response, the Montana Department of Environmental Quality approved numeric standards to be applied to several rivers entering the state from Wyoming, including the Powder River, limiting electrical conductivity (EC) and sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) in these streams. This research assesses the natural variability of water quality in the Powder River and the effects of CBNG co-produced water by comparing historic data to modern data collected from 2006 to 2008. Oxygen, hydrogen and carbon isotopes are evaluated as tools for identification of the source of water in the Powder River. [delta]13C proves to be a good indicator of the presence of CBNG water, which has a value distinct from that of surface water. The quality of water in the river, as it relates to the Montana standards, depends strongly on the flow of the river. At high flow, the EC and SAR of the river are within Montana standards. At low flow, most samples exceed these limits, including samples collected in Montana from streams which do not receive discharge of produced water. Some CBNG water is present in the Powder River. However, the current Montana standards are not well-suited to identify this component because they do not account for the natural seasonal variability of water quality in the Powder River.

Book excerpt: Coal bed natural gas (CBNG) product water is usually disposed into nearby constructed disposal ponds. Geochemistry of product water is not clearly understood. The objective of this study was to collect product water samples at outfalls and corresponding disposal ponds and monitor pH, electrical conductivity (EC), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), alkalinity, iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), boron (B), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), cadmium (Cd), and barium (Ba). From Na, Ca, and Mg measurements, sodium adsorption ratios (SAR) were calculated, and used in a regression model. Additionally, the mobility of trace elements in the disposal ponds was examined based on sediment fractionation studies. Sediment samples were separated into exchangeable, carbonate bound, iron-manganese oxide bound, organically bound, and residual mineral fractions to determinate the fate of arsenic (As), selenium (Se), barium (Ba), and iron (Fe). Outfalls and corresponding disposal ponds were sampled from five different watersheds including Cheyenne River (CHR), Belle Fourche River (BFR), Little Powder River (LPR), Powder River (PR), and Tongue River (TR) within the Powder River Basin (PRB), Wyoming from 2003 to 2005. Results suggest that outfalls are chemically different from corresponding disposal ponds. Sodium, alkalinity, and pH all tend to increase, possibly due to environmental factors such as evaporation, while calcium decreased from outfalls to associated discharge ponds due to calcite precipitation. Watersheds examined in this study were chemically different form each other and most discharge ponds within individual watersheds tended to increase in Na and SAR from 2003 to 2005. Most trace metal concentrations in the produced water increased from outfall to disposal pond except for Ba. In disposal ponds, Ba, As, and B concentrations increased from 2003 to 2005. Geochemical modeling predicted precipitation and dissolution reactions as controlling processes for Al, Cu, and Ba concentrations in CBNG produced water. Adsorption and desorption reactions appear to control As, Mo, and B concentrations in CBNG water in disposal ponds. Since discharge pond water was chemically changing as a function of watershed chemistry, I predicted SAR of discharge pond water using a regression model. The predicted discharge pond water results suggested a high correlation (R2 = 0.83) to outfall SAR. Within the pond sediment, Fe and Ba concentrations did not appear to have an overall increase in any fraction among years. However, As and Se concentrations, though low, increased between years in the exchangeable and carbonate bound fractions. In the near future, As and Se concentrations may increase to levels that would induce chronic toxicity in wildlife and livestock. Coalbed natural gas pond sediments should be monitored for As and Se concentrations in the water soluble fraction periodically and at the termination of production to prevent potential damages to livestock and wildlife. Overall, results of this study will be useful for landowners, water quality managers, and industry in properly managing product water from natural gas extraction.

Book excerpt: Although the production of Coalbed Natural Gas (CBNG) is variable, a large amount of produced water continues to be brought to the surface. The produced water can be very useful in the water-limited regions of Wyoming, but beneficial uses may be hindered by potential water quality problems. To assess these problems a water quality monitoring study began in 1999. Nine years of water data from CBNG outfalls and discharge ponds was measured over the last eleven years and used for trend analyses. The CBNG produced water was measured on-site for pH, electrical conductivity (EC), oxidation-reduction potential, dissolved oxygen, and temperature. The water samples were later analyzed for alkalinity, Ca, Na, Mg, K, Fe, Al, Cr, Mn, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Cd, Ba, B, Cl, SO4, NO3, and PO4. In addition to the trend analyses of CBNG produced water, pond sediment samples were collected over the last four years. Sediment samples were analyzed with TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) for As, Ba, B, Cr, Cu, Mn, Mo, and Se. Trends in CBNG outfalls are not always the same in CBNG discharge ponds: environmental factors play an important role in the water quality of these produced waters. pH is not significantly changing in outfalls of the Belle Fourche River, Cheyenne River, Little Powder River, or Powder River watersheds, but the pH in the Tongue River watershed outfalls is increasing by 0.18 per year. pH in the discharge ponds is increasing by 0.13 per year in all watersheds. Sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) showed no significant increasing or decreasing trends in outfalls or discharge ponds. Alkalinity is significantly decreasing in the outfalls and discharge ponds of the Belle Fourche River, Cheyenne River, and Little Powder River watersheds, and is increasing significantly in the Powder River and Tongue River watersheds. Iron, copper, and chromium concentrations are decreasing in all outfalls of all watersheds. Iron concentrations in the discharge ponds are increasing in the Belle Fourche River, Cheyenne River and Tongue River watersheds, and are decreasing in the Little Powder and Powder River watersheds. Copper and chromium concentrations are decreasing in all watersheds. Overall trend analyses suggest that CBNG outfall produced water in all watersheds of the Powder River Basin meet beneficial use criteria for aquatic life, livestock and wildlife watering, and irrigation except for SAR and to some extent EC. The discharge ponds across all watersheds meet all criteria for all uses except for pH, SAR, and to some extent EC for irrigation, aquatic life, and livestock and wildlife watering. Arsenic concentrations in discharge ponds also exceed aquatic life standard of 7 mcg/L in the Little Powder River and Powder River watersheds. All other water quality components (e.g. Ca, Mg, Na, K, NO3, PO4, SO4, Cl) and trace metals (e.g. Fe, Al, Cr, Mn, Pb, Cu, Zn, Se, Mo, Cd, Ba, B) meet criteria for all common beneficial uses such as, livestock and wildlife watering, aquatic life and irrigation. The results of trend analysis and sediment TCLP analysis discussed in this study could help the CBNG industry, ranchers and landowners, and the state and federal agencies manage CBNG produced water.

Book excerpt: Development of energy and mineral resources in the Powder River structural basin in northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana (fig. 1) includes coalbed natural gas, conventional oil and gas, and coal mining. A common byproduct of coalbed natural gas (CBNG) development is discharge of groundwater that commonly is saline or unsuitable for irrigation of crops and has unknown effects on the aquatic communities inhabiting streams that receive the water (Bureau of Land Management, 2009).

Quantifying this relationship is critical to develop effective management strategies that minimize adverse environmental impacts and potentially reduce production costs. The objective of this study was to assess the spatiotemporal variability in water use and water production through hydrocarbon extraction from conventional and unconventional reservoirs using data from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming as a case study. Field level and detailed well-by-well analyses were conducted to quantify the spatiotemporal variability of oil and gas volumes and the corresponding co-produced water from conventional oil reservoirs and coal bed methane (CBM) reservoirs, and additional water used for hydraulic fracturing in unconventional shale reservoirs. Results show that conventional oil and CBM gas production has markedly declined along with produced water. The water demands of unconventional oil and gas development in the last decade have increased with increasing unconventional oil production, however water use per unit of energy produced has increased. Produced water from unconventional oil wells does not meet hydraulic fracturing water demands. CBM wells in proximity to new unconventional well development may be a source of water needing minimal treatment for growing hydraulic fracturing water demands
