Book excerpt: "Because children are bombarded by an abundance of information from the environment, the development of the ability to filter extraneous information in order to attend to the most relevant information is crucial for optimal information processing. The ability to effectively filter affects every aspect of children's functioning, including educational activities and social interactions. In order to assess the development of filtering with ecologically relevant factors, a forced-choice filtering paradigm in which the target and distracting stimuli were presented at different times was used to measure the speed of target identification among a group of 6-year-olds (n=10), 7-year-olds (n=12), 9-year-olds (n=13) and adults (n=13). The targets were presented at the centre of a computer screen with flankers presented to their left and right along the same horizontal plane. The flankers varied with regard to proximity to the target and were presented 200 ms or 400 ms before, at the same time as, or 200 or 400 ms after the presentation of the target. The distance between the distractors and target was also varied to assess the ability of participants to optimally narrow their focus of attention. Temporal differences in the onset of the target and distractors were used to assess issues of attentional control in a real-world context, where attention must be maintained within a changing environment. Though no difference in response time was observed for the presentation of close and far flankers, the display of flankers before the targets led to faster response times in all four groups while the display of flankers after the target led to slower response times in the two youngest groups. The results are consistent with the notion that children are less efficient in their ability to filter attention compared to adults. Findings are discussed in relation to developmental changes from age 6 years to adulthood." --

Book excerpt: Selective attention in vision undoubtedly uses many different types of mechanisms to achieve better processing of behaviorally relevant visual information. The present dissertation inspects two such possible mechanisms. The first proposed mechanism is through selective spatial attention. We proposed that "attentional control" regions of the brain send selective attention signals that relate to the differential attentional modulation measured in visual cortex, corresponding to the attended and ignored sides of visual space. We find, surprisingly, that the BOLD signal of attentional control regions do not appear to code for selective spatial attention in this manner. fMRI signals therefore appear to prioritize general arousal effects of attention more so than the types of attentional control signals that frontoparietal regions send to early visual cortex. The second proposed mechanism is through sampling visual information through time. It is hypothesized that intrinsic neural oscillations represent inhibitory waves of cortical processing ability, in which subjects are more or less able to detect visual stimuli depending on the phase of [alpha] oscillations in the brain. We used a paradigm involving visual entrainment; this paradigm has been used in the past to support the "pulsed inhibition of [alpha]" hypothesis. We find that the behavioral effects of this paradigm cannot strongly be supported by the pulsed inhibition of [alpha] because the neural effects of visual entrainment are transient and do not carry over into the target period.

If two stimuli are shown in close temporal succession, the second one can be perceived as appearing first, if attention is directed toward it. This phenomenon is known as "prior entry" and has a long history in perception research. However, important fundamental mechanisms that drive the phenomenon were unknown until recently. For instance, how the acceleration of attended and deceleration of unattended stimuli in their processing combine to prior entry was unknown. The cause for this and similar shortcomings are limitations in the methods typically applied in temporal-order judgment (TOJ) research. Importantly, the methods lack strong theories that describe the fundamental encoding processes in TOJs. In this work, a strong theory of attention-biased encoding, TVA (Theory of Visual Attention) is used to model TOJs. In several experiments, the fundamental open questions regarding the perception of temporal order were answered using TVA-based models. For example, the results show that prior entry arises from equipotent speedups and slowdowns of attended and unattended stimuli, respectively. However, the slowdown component is of greater importance for the bias manifested in the prior-entry effect. Another result of this thesis is the quantitative description of the strong effect of peripheral cues in TOJs, which is in part caused by cue-target confusions on the encoding level. ; eng

Temporal and spatial relations were systematically varied between the two streams to address hypotheses about external control of attention in dynamic environments. Relative event timing was varied both within and between the two streams. Spatial relationships for relevant and irrelevant events was the same for experiments 1 & 3, but different for experiment 2. Contrary to predictions from either spatial or object oriented approaches, attending and hence, performance, to relevant events in all three experiments was dependent on the integrated rhythmic patterns that obtained between the two streams, rather than spatial location and event features. Several alternative hypotheses addressed the issue of non-spatial control of attending to dynamic displays, The best account assumes viewer attending is 'paced' by rhythms emerging from an integration of relevant and irrelevant event streams. Book excerpt: Visual attention is involved in many everyday tasks, such as finding one’s shoes, driving, or looking for a face in a crowd. Often attention must be allocated or split onto more than one location. Yet how does the visual system accomplish this, and what cost does it have in terms of performance in visual tasks? This dissertation reports the results of an investigation of the claim that attention could be allocated to two or more non-contiguous locations simultaneously. This study uses a technique, which to the best of my knowledge, has not been used by other investigators studying the splitting of attention. The stimulus used in the current thesis consisted of four possible cue locations, with each potential location located in 45 degree increments (45, 135, 225, 315 degrees) at the same eccentricity. Experiment 1 replicated the results of previous attention studies, but using the new cueing paradigm. The results showed that the spotlight of attention could change location when multiple potential locations are present. The advantage of the new paradigm is the possibility of cueing different locations within and between visual hemifields. This was explored in Experiments 2 and 3, to examine the role of hemispheric asymmetries in the debate over multifocal attention. Specifically, two locations were cued in Experiment 2, and Experiment 3 examined the differences of splitting the attentional beam within and across hemifields. Finally, Experiment 4 investigated the effect of cueing all four locations at the same time. The results from the current thesis confirm that observers can allocate attention to two or more simultaneous locations, without observing any attentional enhancement coming from the in-between cued locations. However, these results stemmed from attending to two locations across hemifields. The present thesis provides more evidence in support of the ability to split attention, and describes the impact that multifocal attention plays in visual perception.
