Excerpt: ... don juan tenorio part I about the middle of the sixteenth century, during the reign of Carlos V, and in the beautiful city of Seville, where earth, sun and the heavens join to make of life a delight; and which, as Cervantes states in Don Quixote, "is so suited to adventures that in each street and at every street corner there are more than anywhere else," the principal personage of this legend, don Juan Tenorio, masked, was seated writing at a table in the Laurel, a hostelry, while two persons, one the host and the other an attendant of the Tenorio, were apart awaiting his leisure. Outside of the inn was a roistering crowd of maskers, students and others, with torches, music and other means of diversion; for it was Carnival time. Don Juan was greatly annoyed by the noise without, and while concluding his letter, threatened to make the participants pay dear for the disturbance. Probably the most popular of Spanish legends, as every November on the Dia de los Difuntos--day devoted to the memory of the dead--most of the Spanish theaters present a play of this title, usually the rythmic drama of Don Jose Zorrilla, from which, mainly, the data of this prose version have been obtained. It is purely fictitious, based upon two others of like nature, the Jester of Seville and the Stone Guest, both of Spanish origin; and is typical of the epoch ascribed; when, says Ganivet "the ideal law of the young hidalgos was to carry in their pocket a formal card with a single sentence in these words, short, clear and impressive. 'This Spaniard is authorized to do as he pleases.'"--Translator. The host and attendant were discussing current events. The former, while admitting good patronage during the Carnival, complained of the general absence of rich...

Download or read book The Folktale written by Stith Thompson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As interest in folklore increases, the folktale acquires greater significance for students and teachers of literature. The material is massive and scattered; thus, few students or teachers have accessibility to other than small segments or singular tales or material they find buried in archives. Stith Thompson has divided his book into four sections which permit both the novice and the teacher to examine oral tradition and its manifestation in folklore. The introductory section discusses the nature and forms of the folktale. A comprehensive second part traces the folktale geographically from Ireland to India, giving culturally diverse examples of the forms presented in the first part. The examples are followed by the analysis of several themes in such tales from North American Indian cultures. The concluding section treats theories of the folktale, the collection and classification of folk narrative, and then analyzes the living folklore process. This work will appeal to students of the sociology of literature, professors of comparative literature, and general readers interested in folklore.
Book Synopsis Folktales of Newfoundland (RLE Folklore) by : Herbert Halpert
Download or read book Folktales of Newfoundland (RLE Folklore) written by Herbert Halpert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 1175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Newfoundland folk narratives, first published in 1996, grew out of extensive fieldwork in folk culture in the province. The intention was to collect as broad a spectrum of traditional material as possible, and Folktales of Newfoundland is notable not only for the number and quality of its narratives, but also for the format in which they are presented. A special transcription system conveys to the reader the accents and rhythms of each performance, and the endnote to each tale features an analysis of the narrator’s language. In addition, Newfoundland has preserved many aspects of English and Irish folk tradition, some of which are no longer active in the countries of their origin. Working from the premise that traditions virtually unknown in England might still survive in active form in Newfoundland, the researchers set out to discover if this was in fact the case.
