Book Synopsis Folktales of Newfoundland (RLE Folklore) by : Herbert Halpert
Download or read book Folktales of Newfoundland (RLE Folklore) written by Herbert Halpert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 1175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of Newfoundland folk narratives, first published in 1996, grew out of extensive fieldwork in folk culture in the province. The intention was to collect as broad a spectrum of traditional material as possible, and Folktales of Newfoundland is notable not only for the number and quality of its narratives, but also for the format in which they are presented. A special transcription system conveys to the reader the accents and rhythms of each performance, and the endnote to each tale features an analysis of the narrator’s language. In addition, Newfoundland has preserved many aspects of English and Irish folk tradition, some of which are no longer active in the countries of their origin. Working from the premise that traditions virtually unknown in England might still survive in active form in Newfoundland, the researchers set out to discover if this was in fact the case.

Book Synopsis Languages – Cultures – Worldviews by : Adam Głaz
Download or read book Languages – Cultures – Worldviews written by Adam Głaz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-07-12 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book explores languages and cultures (or linguacultures) from a translation perspective, resting on the assumption that they find expression as linguacultural worldviews. Specifically, it investigates how these worldviews emerge, how they are constructed, shaped and modified in and through translation, understood both as a process and a product. The book’s content progresses from general to specific: from the notions of worldview and translation, through a consideration of how worldviews are shaped in and through language, to a discussion of worldviews in translation, both in macro-scale and in specific details of language structure and use. The contributors to the volume are linguists, linguistic anthropologists, practising translators, and/or translation studies scholars, and the book will be of interest to scholars and students in any of these fields.

Book Synopsis Folktales from western Newfoundland by : Angela Kerfont
Download or read book Folktales from western Newfoundland written by Angela Kerfont and published by Presses universitaires de Rouen et du Havre. This book was released on 1985 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Galore written by Michael Crummey and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2009-08-11 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sprawling and intimate, stark and fantastical, Galore is a novel about the power of stories to shape and sustain us. This is Michael Crummey’s most ambitious and accomplished work to date. An intricate family saga and love story spanning two centuries, Galore is a portrait of the improbable medieval world that was rural Newfoundland, a place almost too harrowing and extravagant to be real. Remote and isolated, exposed to savage extremes of climate and fate, the people of Paradise Deep persist in a realm where the line between the everyday and the otherworldly is impossible to distinguish. Propelled by the disputes and alliances, grievances and trade-offs that bind the Sellers and Devine families through generations, Galore is alive with singular characters, and an uncommon insight into the complexities of human nature.

Book Synopsis Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders by : Greg Malone
Download or read book Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders written by Greg Malone and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The true story, drawn from official documents and hours of personal interviews, of how Newfoundland and Labrador joined Confederation and became Canada's tenth province in 1949. A rich cast of characters--hailing from Britain, America, Canada and Newfoundland--battle it out for the prize of the resource-rich, financially solvent, militarily strategic island. The twists and turns are as dramatic as any spy novel and extremely surprising, since the "official" version of Newfoundland history has held for over fifty years almost without question. Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders will change all that.
