Book excerpt: Chicano. Cubano. Pachuco. Nuyorican. Puerto Rican. Boricua. Quisqueya. Tejano. To be Latino in the United States in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries has meant to fierce identification with roots, with forbears, with the language, art and food your people came here with. America is a patchwork of Hispanic sensibilities-from Puerto Rican nationalists in New York to more newly arrived Mexicans in the Rio Grande valley-that has so far resisted homogenization while managing to absorb much of the mainstream culture. Living in Spanglish delves deep into the individual's response to Latino stereotypes and suggests that their ability to hold on to their heritage, while at the same time working to create a culture that is entirely new, is a key component of America's future. In this book, Morales pins down a hugely diverse community-of Dominicans, Mexicans, Colombians, Cubans, Salvadorans and Puerto Ricans--that he insists has more common interests to bring it together than traditions to divide it. He calls this sensibility Spanglish, one that is inherently multicultural, and proposes that Spanglish "describes a feeling, an attitude that is quintessentially American. It is a culture with one foot in the medieval and the other in the next century." In Living in Spanglish , Ed Morales paints a portrait of America as it is now, both embracing and unsure how to face an onslaught of Latino influence. His book is the story of groups of Hispanic immigrants struggling to move beyond identity politics into a postmodern melting pot.

Book excerpt: In this charming and delightful picture book, Sami shares the joys of Spanglish with his skeptical abuela and diverse community. Sami loves to speak both English and Spanish. But he doesn't just speak them one at a time. He speaks in Spanglish! Sometimes, he makes brand-new words—like "lonche"—and sometimes, he puts the languages together in one sentence, like when he's hungry for jamberguers con papas fritas. But not everyone likes Spanglish. Abuela thinks that Spanish should be spoken at home and English at school. And to make matters more complicated, Sami's not allowed to write his homework in Spanglish. At first, Sami feels confused and frustrated. But with the support of his family, friends, and neighbors, Sami soon realizes that his unique identity should be celebrated. Hooray, muy bien, Sami!

Although Anna visits Spain every year, she can't speak much Spanish yet. She only speaks it a bit at home, with her mum. Her grandma reminds her how lucky she is to be able to speak two languages, Spanish and English, and to have two different cultures. For ages 6 and over. Book excerpt: "You will spend your entire life trying to find home. Some days you will seek belonging in the bodies of beautiful beings. Most days, like sea turtles that migrated from distant lands, you will carry your home on your back." This collection of poetry is inspired by the feeling of losing and finding home and of building belonging where tidal waves have knocked down shelter. Daydreaming in Spanglish is the rebuilding of that shelter. A coming home. An invitation. It tastes like home-cooked meals that keep your belly full, and sounds like siblings laughing under bed sheets long after bedtime has passed. These poems are hands pressed together filled with prayers, and the feeling of kneeling beneath your mother's skirt while her tears water the soil that you will rise from. Daydreaming in Spanglish is both memoir and reverie from one of today's most confessional poets. Each poem holds a story about family, identity, and the art of code-switching between first and second language. Much like the author, a Hispanic-American poet, these poems were born into Spanish and translated into English. These confessions written in verse are a tribute to dreamers, a montage of gratitude, and a letter to immigrant parents who gave up everything so that our dreams would not fear darkness, but demand daylight. Thus, our daydreaming becomes possible in light of their dreaming. Inspired by the feeling of Mami's hands tousling my curls, the taste of Papi's cafe con pan and Abuela's voice, Daydreaming in Spanglish is a love letter written to dreamers. As the daughter of immigrants, each sentence strung together says thank you in dual dialects: gracias por su sueño hecho mi realidad.

Book excerpt: When construction managers need to talk about the specifics of a construction job – where the electrical outlets need to go, when the framing will be completed, how a plumbing problem will be solved – they need to be able to communicate clearly and effectively with workers. That task gets considerably more difficult when managers and workers are speaking in different languages. More than simple dictionary terms or phrases, managers need a tool for understanding the basics of the language their workers use – a resource that lets them communicate the myriad of questions, issues, schedules, and tasks that come up on a construction job. Learning Construction Spanglish is exactly the tool they need. This book offers up: • Communication tools – a method for understanding the basics of Spanglish – not just dictionary terms. • Practical, useful on-the-job terms and phrases. • Logical organization that makes info fast and easy to find. • Both English/Spanish and Spanish/English glossaries.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a sample of the most recent studies on Spanish-English codeswitching both in the Caribbean and among bilinguals in the United States. In thirteen chapters, it brings together the work of leading scholars representing diverse disciplinary perspectives within linguistics, including psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, theoretical linguistics, and applied linguistics, as well as various methodological approaches, such as the collection of naturalistic oral and written data, the use of reading comprehension tasks, the elicitation of acceptability judgments, and computational methods. The volume surpasses the limits of different fields in order to enable a rich characterization of the cognitive, linguistic, and socio-pragmatic factors that affect codeswitching, therefore, leading interested students, professors, and researchers to a better understanding of the regularities governing Spanish-English codeswitches, the representation and processing of codeswitches in the bilingual brain, the interaction between bilinguals’ languages and their mutual influence during linguistic expression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression. In addition to these chapters, the volume also collects a number of thematically related group sections from the ICLA congress, preserving their original context.
