Diese Arbeit setzt sich im Anschluss an diese Frage mit innerstaatlichen Ungleichheiten auseinander. Hierfür zeigt sie zunächst auf, anhand welcher Indikatoren sich soziale Ungleichheit messen lässt. Anhand dieser Indikatoren werden zentrale Ergebnisse der Entwicklung innerstaatlicher Ungleichheit in der europäischen Gesellschaft seit 1980 vorgestellt und diese komparativ von der Bedeutung anderer Raumbezüge abgegrenzt. Abschließend werden die empirischen Erkenntnisse auch theoretisch fundiert. Im März 2017 reichte die britische Premierministerin Theresa May dem Europäischen Rat eine schriftliche Mitteilung über den Austritt des Vereinigten Königreichs aus der Europäischen Union ein (Brexit). Zwar sind dessen Ursachen angesichts des kurzen Zeitraums bis jetzt nicht abschließend geklärt, doch deuten erste Veröffentlichungen darauf hin, dass die individuelle Entscheidung für den Brexit teilweise auf die innerstaatliche Ungleichheit in UK zurückzuführen ist. Deutlich wird vor diesem Hintergrund, dass Ungleichheit nicht nur ein soziales, sondern auch ein politisches Problem darstellen kann, das wie im Fall des Brexit die Idee des europäischen Projekts ins Wanken bringen kann. Unter innerstaatlicher Ungleichheit wird im Folgenden soziale Ungleichheit innerhalb des Referenzraums Nationalstaat verstanden. Die enge Verknüpfung zwischen innerstaatlicher Ungleichheit und Einkommensverteilung wird vor dem Hintergrund besonders deutlich, dass für 24 EU-Mitgliedsstaaten zwischen 2004 und 2008 etwa zwei Drittel der Varianz der Einkommensverteilung auf innerstaatliche Ursachen zurückzuführen waren. Hierzu zählen unter anderem Besonderheiten der beobachteten Region, des jeweiligen Haushalts sowie des Erhebungsjahres. Neben diesen kommt weiteren Faktoren auf anderen räumlichen Ebenen Bedeutung bei der Entstehung sozialer Ungleichheit zu.

Book excerpt: Since the 1973 publication of Alain Peyrefitte’s prophetic When China Awakens, developments in East Asia have outstripped even the wildest predictions. China has undergone the fastest industrialization and urbanization process in history, yet tensions there are rising as some realize how far they have been left behind. This volume explores the applicability of European economic and social models to our analysis of East Asia’s and, in particular, China’s situation. Though millions of Chinese and other Asian people have been lifted out of poverty, inequality is rising nonetheless, and contemporary Europe and Asia are both witnessing collective action against rampant economic neoliberalism in the former and the exclusion of minorities in the latter. It is difficult to overstate the relevance of this assessment, which seeks answers to some central questions: Can events in Europe serve as a model for those in East Asia? Are there similarities or differences between the two regions? To what extent do political, economic or social systems stimulate or inhibit collective action? How culturally equivalent are the collective actions of marginalized/ disadvantaged people in the two locations, or are events in Europe symptomatic of specific cultural attributes? Comparing and contrasting the research tools and dominant paradigms in the social and economic sciences in East Asia and Europe, as this volume does, throws out some revealing results.
