Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, Languages of South Asia covers all important languages and language groups of the so-called Indian subcontinent (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan). It concentrates on the more southern languages, that is the Indo-Aryan, Dravidian and Munda groups; a brief survey of Tibeto-Burman languages is also included. As well as giving a description of the current status and character of each language, Dr. Zograph goes into a detailed structural analysis of its phonology, morphology and syntax. The problems of the historical background of the modern languages, and their classification, are also discussed. The book is supplemented by two language maps, tables showing the main alphabets, a bibliography of reliable works on the subject and an index of 350 language names used in the text. This book will be of interest to students of language, linguistics and South Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together contributions that explore the increasingly important roles that English plays in Asia, including its contribution to economic growth, national imaginaries and creative writing. These are issues that are political in a broad sense, but the diversity of Asian contexts also means that the social, political and cultural ramifications of the spread of English into Asia will have to be understood in relation to the challenges facing specific societies. The chapters in the book collectively illustrate this diversity by focusing on countries from South Asia, Southeast Asia and the Asia Pacific. Each country has two contributions devoted to it: one paper provides an overview of the country s language policy and its positioning of English, and another provides a critical discussion of creative expressions involving the use of English. Taken together, the papers in the volume detail the most recent developments concerning the politics of English in Asia."

This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an analysis of the current state and the future needs of American studies of India, Pakistan, Ceylon, Afghanistan, and Nepal. Although most of the developmental goals set immediately after World War II by the scholars then working in South Asian area studies have been amply fulfilled, a new stocktaking and blueprint for the future was felt to be necessary. In addition to meeting this requirement, Resources for South Asian Area Studies treats the more general needs of the field and discusses the individual papers, which were read at a plenary conference held in New York early in 1961. One of the purposes of this volume, then, is to survey the current resources and needs in the field of South Asian area studies, and this is a primary interest of the convener of the conference, the Association for Asian Studies' Committee on South Asia, whose chairman, Richard D. Lambert, edited this book. The other purpose is more specialized, and reflects the specific interest of the United States Office of Education, the sponsor of the conference. Under the National Defense Education Act this office is explicitly charged with the development of skills among Americans in the vernacular languages of the region. A companion volume to this one, edited by W. Norman Brown and entitled Resources for South Asian Language Studies, concerns the development of linguistic material and personnel. The present volume is oriented more toward the integration of those materials into area studies proper; hence the discussion of this problem that runs through each of the papers. The book should be of interest to all those concerned with the emergence from parochialism and the development of an international, particularly non-Western aspect of American higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainland Southeast Asia is one of the most fascinating and complex cultural and linguistic areas in the world. This book provides a rich and comprehensive survey of the history and core systems and subsystems of the languages of this fascinating region. Drawing on his depth of expertise in mainland Southeast Asia, Enfield includes more than a thousand data examples from over a hundred languages from Cambodia, China, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam, bringing together a wealth of data and analysis that has not previously been available in one place. Chapters cover the many ways in which these languages both resemble each other, and differ from each other, and the diversity of the area's languages is highlighted, with a special emphasis on minority languages, which outnumber the national languages by nearly a hundred to one. The result is an authoritative treatment of a fascinating and important linguistic area.
