Book excerpt: When Nelson Mandela emerged from decades in jail to preach reconciliation, South Africans truly appeared a people reborn as the Rainbow Nation. Yet, a quarter of a century later, the country sank into bitter recriminations and rampant corruption under Jacob Zuma. Why did this happen, and how was hope betrayed? President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is seeking to heal these wounds, is due to lead the African National Congress into an election by May 2019. The ANC is hoping to claw back support lost to the opposition in the Zuma era. This book will shed light on voters' choices and analyze the election outcome as the results emerge. With chapters on all the major issues at stake--from education to land redistribution-- Understanding South Africa offers insights into Africa's largest and most diversified economy, closely tied to its neighbors' fortunes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of South Africa, Vol. 1 IN the presenting of these volumes on the birds of South Africa, it has been my endeavour to create in the minds of my readers a love and a keen appreciation of our beautiful and useful allies. From my earliest youth I have made an intimate study of the creatures of mountain, veld, forest, and stream in their native haunts. The results of some of these studies have already been published in book form in the Natural History of South Africa and Snakes of South Africa. My intention was to have published these volumes at an earlier date, but, owing to unforeseen circumstances, their publication has been held over. The results of several years of research and study of the birds of South Africa were recorded in a number of diaries. These records were lent to a naturalist friend with permission to take notes from them. Alas! He lost them all. It was a sad loss to me, resulting in further years of investigation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teaching and research of the Classics in South Africa are deeply rooted in the racial, political and educational inequalities which have characterised its turbulent history. In this original study, Michael Lambert opens three windows on to this history, using the creation of identities as his theoretical lens. The foundation of the Classical Association of South Africa in 1956 and the cultural reinforcement of Afrikaner nationalist identity; the deployment of British colonial identity in public discourses about the role of the Classics in apartheid South Africa at an English-speaking university; and the exploration of black African identities in response to the teaching of the Classics at missionary institutions, where 'vocational training' was locked in combat with a classical education, regarded by an educated black elite as the means for upward social mobility in a highly-stratified colonial society. The book will be of interest to students of many subjects, including Classics, Cultural Studies, African Studies and History of Education.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Question of Colour, Vol. 1: A Study of South Africa In a book which is a setting forth of facts, not an expression of opinions, the authorship is immaterial. But it may be well to state that the writer of these pages is neither a missionary nor in any way connected with the religious methods employed by various Christian bodies in South Africa. The view given here claims to be the result of purely independent research and observation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from South Africa, Vol. 6: 1486-1913 The present volume brings to a close the first part of this history of the English People Overseas. It is my intention, or at least my hope, that at some future date I may be able to justify more completely the title of this work by adding, to these already issued, other volumes recording the growth of the English people in the United States - still the greatest of all English colonies - in Canada from 1867 to the present day, and in India since 1828, the period at which the second volume of this book concludes. The fulfilment of so considerable an undertaking must inevitably occupy several years, but I cannot help thinking that it will be worth while to have a complete record in one easily accessible work of the activities of the English people in all parts of the world, (I may say in parenthesis, and in answer to certain critical inquiries from Scotland, that I have used the term English throughout, not from any desire to disparage our masters north of the Twood, but as indicating English-speaking - a habit to which the best of Scots must plead guilty. The term English may in this sense be applied to the United States, whereas British would be entirely out of place; nor am I conscious of having done any injustice to Scottish enterprise within the limits of the British Empire, or anywhere outside the title of this book.
