Book excerpt: "This is an editions and translation of the first extant vernacular 'history' of Britain, by the Norman-French cleric Wace. His verse chronicle was in turn a translation, from the Latin prose of Geoffrey of Monmouth's History of the Kings of Britain (c. 1138). It traces British history, part factual, part fictional, stretching from Brutus., the eponymous founder of the nation, up to seventh century, when Anglo-Saxon invaders took control of the island. Some well-known stories appear here for the first time, such as that of King Lear and the earliest full-blown 'biography' of King Arthur. The Normans were keen to discover, and where they could not discover, invent, the history of the land they had conquered. Geoffrey's work filled that need, and Wace continued the process by making such history still more accessible and memorable, putting it into French verse and presenting it to Eleanor of Aquitaine, the cultivated wife of his king, in 1155. This volume provides the French text en face, revised from Ivor Arnold's 1938 edition and restoring many readings from his base manuscripts. It includes a full introduction by the translator." -- Publisher's description

Book excerpt: Best known for his two chronicles, the Roman de Brut and the Roman de Rou, Wace, one of the great pioneers of twelfth-century French writing, is also the author of three hagiographical works: the Conception Nostre Dame and the Lives of St Margaret and St Nicholas. The Conception is the first vernacular work to focus on the life of the Virgin Mary. Emphasising Margaret's concern for women in labour, the Margaret seemingly contributed to the saint's broad popularity. The Nicholas, with its many miracles involving children, equally played a key role in popularising its protagonist's cult. The present volume brings these works together for the first time and provides the original texts, the first translations into English, notes and substantial introductions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and objective study of Layamon's sources is long overdue. As a first step Françoise le Saux investigates the English poet's handling of his main source, Wace's Roman de Brut, to determine what principles guided the composition of the English Brut. These established, she is able to distinguish between different sorts of variation from the Roman, thereby providing norms against which to gauge the probability of further, secondary sources. Additional sources are then identified, in the various fields suggested by the poem: historical; literary; and religious writings (or tales) in Welsh, English, Latin and French and perhaps even Scandinavian.

Book excerpt: Written from a post-colonial North American perspective, this study considers the ways in which medieval British writers, in the wake of the Norman Conquest, used Arthurian historiography to reflect their fears about `colonial contamination' and about borders in general. The first half of the study examines the presentation of British history in works written on the Anglo-Welsh border. Warren then examines literature from the continent to look at British history from a Norman perspective. Parts of this study have been previously published.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read an interview with Norbert Bachleitner. In this 200th volume of Internationale Forschungen zur Allgemeinen und Vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaft the editors Norbert Bachleitner, Achim H. Hölter and John A. McCarthy ‘take stock’ of the discipline. It focuses on recurrent questions in the field of Comparative Literature: What is literature? What is meant by ‘comparative’? Or by ‘world’? What constitute ‘transgressions’ or ‘refractions’? What, ultimately, does being at home in the world imply? When we combine the answers to these individual questions, we might ultimately reach an intriguing proposition: Comparative Literature contributes to a sense of being at home in a world that is heterogeneous and fractured, rather than affirming a monolithic canon marked by territory and homogeneity. The volume unites essays on world literature, literature in the context of the history of ideas, comparative women and gender studies, aesthetics and textual analysis, and literary translation and tradition.
