This book was released on 1999 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policymakers interested in reducing poverty and improving income distribution in rural Egypt should focus on nonfarm income, which not only accounts for almost 60 percent of total income for the rural poor but also favorably affects income distribution. Nonfarm income is an inequality-reducing source of income in a land-scarce setting such as rural Egypt because inadequate land "pushes" poorer households out of agriculture and into the nonfarm sector.

Book excerpt: Much of past literature has assumed that households in developing countries save at the same marginal rate from all sources of income. But in rural Pakistan households save at very different marginal rates from different sources of income. The marginal propensity to save from those sources of income that are more variable and uncertain --- like external remittances --- is much higher than from those sources of income that are more predictable --- like rental income.
Book Synopsis Income Inequalities and Well-Being in Rural Pakistan by : Khadija Shams
Download or read book Income Inequalities and Well-Being in Rural Pakistan written by Khadija Shams and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Income inequalities and subjective well-being are important measures of socio-economic cohesion around the globe. Although a considerable share of resources in emerging economies stems from their rural areas, limited data availability precludes important insights into the overall socio-economic tissue of the developing world. This monograph seeks to advance our knowledge on various dimensions of inequalities and well-being with particular emphasis on rural Pakistan, using unique survey data. Our analysis offers several policy recommendations on various important socio-economic factors. Indeed, some of the results of this study might also illuminate the policy debate in other geographic areas with similar profiles.
Book Synopsis Causes and Consequences of Income Inequality by : Ms.Era Dabla-Norris
Download or read book Causes and Consequences of Income Inequality written by Ms.Era Dabla-Norris and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes the extent of income inequality from a global perspective, its drivers, and what to do about it. The drivers of inequality vary widely amongst countries, with some common drivers being the skill premium associated with technical change and globalization, weakening protection for labor, and lack of financial inclusion in developing countries. We find that increasing the income share of the poor and the middle class actually increases growth while a rising income share of the top 20 percent results in lower growth—that is, when the rich get richer, benefits do not trickle down. This suggests that policies need to be country specific but should focus on raising the income share of the poor, and ensuring there is no hollowing out of the middle class. To tackle inequality, financial inclusion is imperative in emerging and developing countries while in advanced economies, policies should focus on raising human capital and skills and making tax systems more progressive.

Book Synopsis How Do Migration and Remittances Affect Inequality? A Case Study of Mexico by : Zsoka Koczan

This book was released on 2018-06-14 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poverty-reducing effects of remittances have been well-documented, however, their effects on inequality are less clear. This paper examines the impact of remittances on inequality in Mexico using household-level information on the receiving side. It hopes to speak to their insurance role by examining how remittances are affected by domestic and external crises: the 1994 Mexican Peso crisis and the Global Financial Crisis. We find that remittances lower inequality, and that they become more pro-poor over time as migration opportunities become more widespread. This also strengthens their insurance effects, mitigating some of the negative impact of shocks on the poorest.
