Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West has always been a resource for the Finns. Scholars, artists and other professionals have sought contacts from Europe throughout the centuries. The Finnish experience in Western Europe and the New World is a story of migrant laborers, expatriates and specialists working abroad. But you don’t have to be born in Finland to be a Finn. The experiences of second-generation Finnish immigrants and their descendants open up new possibilities for understanding the relationship between Finland and the West. The Finnish passage westward has not always crossed national borders. Karelian evacuees headed west, as did young people from the Finnish countryside when opportunities to make a living in agriculture and forestry diminished in the post-war era. The legacy of these migrants is still visible in the suburbs of Finnish cities today. This book is a joint effort of the Department of Ethnology and the Department of History at the University of Helsinki. It was written by Ph. D. students supervised by Academy Research Fellows Maria Lähteenmäki and Hanna Snellman, in collaboration with colleagues abroad interested in current research in ethnology and history.

Book excerpt: Professor Drummond's two pioneering studies, British Economic Policy and the Empire 1919-1939, 1972, and Imperial Economic Policy 1917-1939, 1974, helped to revive interest in Empire migration and other aspects of inter-war imperial economic history. This book concentrates upon the attempts to promote state-assisted migration in the post-First World War period particularly associated with the Empire Settlement Act of 1922. It examines the background to these new emigration experiments, the development of plans for both individual and family migration, as well as the specific schemes for the settlement of ex-servicemen and of women. Varying degrees of encouragement, acquiescence and resistance with which they were received in the dominions, are discussed. After the First World War there was a striking reorientation of state policy on emigration from the United Kingdom. A state-assisted emigration scheme for ex-servicemen and ex-servicewomen, operating from 1919 to 1922, was followed by an Empire Settlement Act, passed in 1922. This made significant British state funding available for assisted emigration and overseas land settlement in British Empire countries. Foremost amongst the achievements of the high-minded imperial projects was the free-passage scheme for ex-servicemen and women which operated between 1919 and 1922 under the auspices of the Oversea Settlement Committee. Cheap passages were considered as one of the prime factors in stimulating the flow of migration, particularly in the case of single women. The research represented here makes a significant contribution to the social histories of these states as well as of the United Kingdom.

Book excerpt: Australia's post-war immigration confronts historians with perhaps the greatest paradox in our recent history. Policies and programmes of the 1940s and 1950s, designed and adopted to confirm and fortify our identity as a British-European outpost, eventually resulted in a complete abandonment of racian exclusivity. For more than half a century 'White Australia' was the foundation population policy and socio-cultural programme of the Australian Commonwealth. Bold Experiment, the first general collection of source material to describe and analyse the pattern of our immigration history since 1945, traces the undermining and destruction of 'White Australia', and the goals, policies and programmes which have replaced it. Bold Experiment, a collection of documents, examines the development of immigration policy since 1945, the migrant experience, and the host response. It is divided into four roughly chronological, though overlapping, sections. Section One examines the origins of Australia's 'bold experiment', the development of policy and its implementation between 1945 and 1954, and migrant experiences in those years. Section Two explores aspects of the settlement experience of those who were part of the large migrations from Britain, Italy, Greece and other parts of Europe between the 1940s and the 1970s. Section Three focuses upon the decline of the White Australia policy in the 1960s, its overturning as a consequence of the Vietnam War, the refugee crisis, the settlement experience of migrants from Indochina, and the controversy surrounding their immigration. Section 4 explores the recent debate over desirable and undesirable outcomes of immigration in which one side asserts that it has led to a crisis of national identity, while the other celebrates a new diversity. This section also deals with migrants' perspectives on themselves, their communities and their place in Australian society.

The surveys concentrate on people whose views are on the public record in various media, who significantly reflect opinion in their society, and who can therefore be taken to be both influential and to some extent representative. The results of this comprehensive survey, which suggest Australia has an image problem in the region, are detailed.
