Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “For God alone my soul in silence waits....” In these reflections on Psalm 62 Margaret Guenther provides the foundation for a time of reflection and retreat without ever leaving home. The book's first chapter introduces us to ways of making a retreat wherever we are, at a place apart or in the midst of our daily lives. Guenther then offers eight meditations on Psalm 62, with its themes of waiting on God's presence with patience, trust, and expectation. She explores the images the psalm evokes of longing, silence, waiting, safety, enemies, and God as a rock and refuge. As in all her books, Guenther finds new ways to explore these ancient themes with the wit and practicality of an accomplished storyteller. These eight meditations can be read consecutively over the course of a single day or weekend, or spaced over time with periods of reflection in between. Each meditation ends with ideas for further prayer and pondering. My Soul in Silence Waits is one of our series of Cowley Cloister Books: smaller format, gift edition books designed for meditative and devotional reading.

Book excerpt: One of the first questions asked in examining the root causes of discontent should be:When did you stop singing?or: Why aren't we in touch with this vital part of our being? In such an inquiry lies a journey toward the essential qualities that give happiness to the way we lead our daily lives. ThroughoutSong and Silence,Susan Hale explores the meaning of song and the cultural estrangement from our own voices. She shows us how singing can restore a relationship with ourselves, the natural world, and the many human worlds around us. What belongs to each of us coming into life is an ability to express inner feelings through sound. Using this most basic part of human existence can connect us with our deepest spiritual joys. This insight is often forgotten, but still functions in tribal cultures around the planet. Reaching into our common global matrix, Susan Hale shares experiential truths and lessons of the healing power of sound, song, and silence learned in her own journey as a singer. This book offers a fresh point of view, which leads to simple, yet profound, personal growth.

Book excerpt: An introduction to the nature and benefits of silence as a new spiritual reality that can lead to self-awareness and healing in our chaotic, fast-paced world With its beautifully rich prose, Robert Sardello's newest book invites us to experience silence as a companion presence—a creative heart-felt experience that renews, restores, and deepens the body's response to the internal and external world. Drawing on images and ideas from the Trials of St. Anthony, anthroposophy, depth psychology, and phenomenology, the book delves deeply into the subtleties of silence, exploring the phenomenon as a source of wholeness and revitalization. Sharing his own insights from years of experience in spiritual psychology, Sardello takes us on an inner journey beyond the chaotic noise of the ego to a place of inner communion and self-healing. Silence opens our eyes to the importance of cultivating the nurturing aspects of silence in our personal relationships and enables us to awaken the inner currents of spirituality that ultimately lead to a path of universal compassion, service, and healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time when technology penetrates our lives in so many ways and materialism exerts such a powerful influence over us, Cardinal Robert Sarah presents a bold book about the strength of silence. The modern world generates so much noise, he says, that seeking moments of silence has become both harder and more necessary than ever before. Silence is the indispensable doorway to the divine, explains the cardinal in this profound conversation with Nicolas Diat. Within the hushed and hallowed walls of the La Grande Chartreux, the famous Carthusian monastery in the French Alps, Cardinal Sarah addresses the following questions: Can those who do not know silence ever attain truth, beauty, or love? Do not wisdom, artistic vision, and devotion spring from silence, where the voice of God is heard in the depths of the human heart? After the international success of God or Nothing, Cardinal Sarah seeks to restore to silence its place of honor and importance. "Silence is more important than any other human work," he says, "for it expresses God. The true revolution comes from silence; it leads us toward God and others so as to place ourselves humbly and generously at their service."

Book excerpt: Living with bipolar disorder is not just a struggle for the individual; it affects everyone associated with that person as well. When Silence Screams chronicles author Katherine Fogg’s life living with bipolar disorder, severe anxiety, and social phobia from her teenage years to the present. Her searing journal entries talk not only of the struggles she has encountered living with bipolar disorder but also of the emotional ramifications associated with living such a tormented life, relentlessly experiencing severe emotional ups and downs and overwhelming depression. Spanning more than a decade, When Silence Screams begins when she is sixteen and experiencing the anticipation and excitement of her junior year in high school. We don’t hear from her again for a full year and by then the challenges and struggles of her journey with bipolar disorder have begun in earnest. At the age of thirty, after years of trying to control her affliction through alcohol abuse and eating disorders, she finally realizes that she is out of control and that she must seek help. It is only then that she learns she has bipolar disorder, in addition to severe anxiety and social phobia. Her journals represent her personal journey through the years of suffering from these disorders. Her hope is that anyone who reads When Silence Screams will gain a better understanding of what an internal struggle living with bipolar disorder can be for all involved.

Many would like to reach the peak of perfection in a very short time, without any mortification or self-denial. To them it seems that love is all that is needed because it is the bond of perfection. What they say is correct but incomplete — they do not fully understand how many sacrifices are demanded by Christian love. We cannot really love God and our brothers if we do not die to ourselves. In order to love perfectly God and our neighbor, we must practically give up many things and accept many sacrifices. Love asks for courageous and generous sacrifices! “Love must hurt us,” said Mother Teresa of Calcutta. — from the Concluding Conference

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE following pages are derived from "The Book of the Golden Precepts," one of the works put into the hands of mystic students in the East. The knowledge of them is obligatory in that school, the teachings of which are accepted by many Theosophists. Therefore, as I know many of these Precepts by heart, the work of translating has been relatively an easy task for me. It is well known that, in India, the methods of psychic development differ with the Gurus (teachers or masters), not only because of their belonging to different schools of philosophy, of which there are six, but because every Guru has his own system, which he generally keeps very secret. But beyond the Himalayas the method in the Esoteric Schools does not differ, unless the Guru is simply a Lama, but little more learned than those he teaches. The work from which I here translate forms part of the same series as that from which the "Stanzas" of the Book of Dzyan were taken, on which the Secret Doctrine is based. Together with the great mystic work called Paramartha, which, the legend of Nagarjuna tells us, was delivered to the great Arhat by the Nagas or "Serpents" (in truth a name given to the ancient Initiates), the Book of the Golden Precepts claims the same origin. Yet its maxims and ideas, however noble and original, are often found under different forms in Sanskrit works, such as the Dnyaneshvari, that superb mystic treatise in which Krishna describes to Arjuna in glowing colors the condition of a fully illumined Yogi; and again in certain Upanishads. This is but natural, since most, if not all, of the greatest Arhats, the first followers of Gautama Buddha were Hindus and Aryans, not Mongolians, especially those who emigrated into Tibet. The works left by Aryasanga alone are very numerous.

There is a long, arduous ideational search that the main character undertakes, which takes him from the depths of the subconscious to the heights of heaven in order to find the true purpose of Love. He is aided in this search by a rather shadowy figure that seems to be someone he has been in love with for a very long time. He will eventually reach the conclusion that Love, when all is said and done, is really Love of the higher Self.
