Book excerpt: Malice For as long as I can remember, I've only felt one thing-hatred. No other emotion has ever lived within the confines of my soul. On many occasions I've been told I have no soul. Not that I give a damn. It only means I won't get burned. Growing up I saw the people closest to me get hurt by those who were important to them. It showed me that feelings were overrated. It worked fine until that one day, the day she walked in. I wasn't prepared for what it meant when she walked through my clubhouse door. One look at her and I knew I'd do anything to keep her safe. For so long I've felt hatred, but this woman makes me feel something else-fire.

Book excerpt: “Wealth without work Pleasure without conscience Science without humanity Knowledge without character Politics without principle Commerce without morality Worship without sacrifice. https://vidjambov.blogspot.com/2023/01/book-inventory-vladimir-djambov-talmach.html The holy apostles, enlightened and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, carried the indescribable wealth of God's goodness into the whole universe: the Son of God, who came to the world in flesh, preached; faith in Him was planted in the hearts of men; they denied idoloress, peoples, darkened by the darkness of the ignorance of God, enlightened; the eyes of the heart blinded to the knowledge of the true God opened; founded the Church of God on the face of the whole earth; gathered a single blessed herd from different nations, like wild animals, gathered; The Holy Trinity — the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, the one God — was taught to read; they lit the fire of God's love in the hearts of believers and affirmed the hope of life and the bliss of the next century, as it is written about them: they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. (Mk. 16, 20 ). * * * Christ the Lord the King of Heaven, having come to earth and having done the work of eternal salvation on earth, has sent His saints and apostles to all the countries and cities of the whole earth to proclaim His coming and His coming salvation to them. Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. ( Mark 16:15 ). These messengers of God and faithful servants of Christ went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. ( Mark 16, 20 ).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sermon as crafted by the early New England preachers was the most prominent literary form of its day, yet the earliest Puritan texts have as a rule been available only in rare-book collections. This anthology of sermons of the first generation of preachers fills a serious gap in American literature. The preachers collected here, the most widely published of their time, were among the eighty or more who emigrated to Massachusetts Bay during the 1630s. They are John Cotton of Boston, Thomas Shepard of Cambridge, and Thomas Hooker of Hartford, the three foremost "lights of the western churches," and two eminent colleagues, Peter Bulkeley of Concord and John Davenport, first of New Haven and later of Boston. The selections are chosen to be representative of the lengthy works from which they are drawn, to reflect the major concerns and styles of the preachers' work as a whole, and to demonstrate the genre of the sermon as developed by the early American Puritans. Not only does this anthology represent an important contribution to literary history, but the sermons also illustrate a doctrine uniquely elaborated in this period—a consistent and emphatic narrative, mythlike in its repetition and heroics, of the progress of the soul from a state of nature to a state of salvation. This theme may be seen as a three-stage-development, although individual sermons may vary. These stages—preparation, vocation, and regeneration—determine the order of the selections. The editors' introductory material supplies a comprehensive and thorough discussion of the early New England sermons, concentrating on their role, history, structure, style, and subject matter. A separate essay on the texts of the sermons describes the relationship between the early printed versions and their form as delivered in the pulpit. The introduction preceding each selection presents original research on the historical circumstances of the preaching and publication of the work from which the sermon is drawn. The editors have also provided brief biographies of the preacfiers represented here, an annotated list of recommended background reading, and the most exhaustive checklist available of authoritative editions of the sermons of these five preachers. This book will be useful to colonial specialists as well as to students of early American literature, religion, and history. The texts are critically edited for readability, with modernized spelling and annotations of unfamiliar phrases and allusions.

Book excerpt: The Acts of the Apostles—or more in keeping with the author's intent, the Acts of the Ascended Lord—is part two of Luke's story of "all that Jesus began to do and teach." In it he recounts the expansion of the church as its witness spread from Jerusalem to all of Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. While at least forty early church authors commented on Acts, the works of only three survive in their entirety—John Chrysostom's Homilies on the Acts of the Apostles, Bede the Venerable's Commentary on the Acts of the Apostles and a long Latin epic poem by Arator. In this Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture volume, substantial selections from the first two of these appear with occasional excerpts from Arator alongside many excerpts from the fragments preserved in J. A. Cramer's Catena in Acta SS. Apostolorum. Among the latter we find selections from Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, Ephrem the Syrian, Didymus the Blind, Athanasius, Jerome, John Cassian, Augustine, Ambrose, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Theodoret of Cyr, Origen, Cyril of Jerusalem, Cyril of Alexandria, Cassiodorus, and Hilary of Poitiers, some of which are here translated into English for the first time. As readers, we find these early authors transmit life to us because their faith brought them into living and experiential contact with the realities spoken of in the sacred text.

Book excerpt: Cyrus, burdened by grief, fades into the ethereal embrace of the Otherworld. There, a wraith, cunning and malevolent, ensnares him, spinning his fate in a dizzying spiral. The hybrid leaders and realm walkers, their destinies intertwined, are losing without him. As tensions escalate and veils fracture, Cyrus’s purpose shifts. No longer merely a liberator, guided by darkness he becomes a seeker of ancient truths—secrets veiled by time, hidden within the very fabric of the middle realm. His quest is relentless, fueled by determination and the weight of his lost love. Marilisa, steadfast and unwavering, pulls him back from the abyss. The pureblood realm leaders, obstinate and unyielding, make promises they won’t keep. When things go over the deep-end and the cleansing starts, he has to make a decision to send Marilisa and their unborn child to Lols and seize the realms with fury. Relinquishing himself to the wraiths, Cyrus vows revenge. Plunging into the battle, he risks everything–even his own life. The clash reverberates through the realms as destiny hangs in the balance.

Book excerpt: There are three rules for being best friends with a mafia princess: 1. Don't ask any personal questions. 2. Don't show up at her house unannounced. 3. Don't ever, ever let anyone know you're friends. For three years, I followed the rules. Vicky and I met once a week at the diner where I worked. I was her slice of normalcy, she was the one person I could confide in. It might have been unconventional, but it worked for us. One night, all hell broke loose and I got caught up in a battle of bloodshed where we almost lost our lives. I ended up face to face with Vicky's dangerous older brothers. Anthony, William, and Nicholas Civella--the made men of the Kansas City Mob. After fighting for my life and proving myself worthy, they brought me into their deadly world. It was glamorous but twisted. Torture, death, and crime followed me everywhere I went, chiseling away at parts of me until I wasn't the same anymore. Slowly, I betrayed my best friend, and fell in love. Chances are they'll ruin me. This thing between us has deadly consequences. But in this criminal world, I'm learning that the rules don't apply when you're the boss.

Along with the other three, The Dark Night Of the Soul, The Living Flame of God and the Spiritual Canticle, it is regarded as one of the greatest works of mysticism in Christianity and in the Spanish language.
