Book excerpt: It's spring 1964, and Fleur-de-Lys Records is sending its Soul Cavalcade around the country: 20 cities in 24 days, a couple dozen singers and musicians all squashed on one bus. Then there's Esme Hunter— the newest member of the troupe, a singer with an astonishing secret that will soon spin the Cavalcade upside-down. A comedy with Shakespearean tones, a wild romp with blistering music, an always fascinating story with tinges of tragedy, this book gets to the heart of American soul music.

Book excerpt: A lawsuit over rights to a suddenly popular 1960s ditty fuels a lively rock and roll nostalgia trip in Dunn's latest "musical novel." Songwriter Dink Stephenson, his partner, Princess Diamond, and producer, Punky Solomon, engineered the mid-'60s success of New York "bad girl" trio the Annas, fronted by the mega-sexy, beehived and heavily mascara'd Anna Dubower. The Annas score two #1 hits, but their time at the top is cut short by the British Invasion.

Book excerpt: Capturing the zeitgeist of 1967, this story follows a young girl named Flower as she discovers the hippie counterculture. At turns naïve and wise beyond her years, scruffy yet beautiful, heedlessly adventurous and endlessly savvy, Flower is a character for any time, not just her own. From “Cowtown, Oregon,” Flower runs away to San Francisco to experience the Summer of Love and then goes off on train-hopping, hitchhiking adventures across the USA, with stints working at a bank and at a summer camp disguised as a boy, and stays at both a timber camp and then a commune called Old Bison. A picaresque journey, this tale explores the music, romance, politics, and world-changing dreams of the late 1960s.

Book excerpt: Shamans throughout much of Asia are regarded as having the power to control and coerce spirits. Many Asians today still turn to shamans to communicate with the world of the dead, heal the sick, and explain enigmatic events. To understand Asian religions, therefore, a knowledge of shamanism is essential. Shamans in Asia provides an introduction to the study of shamans and six ethnographic studies, each of which describes and analyses the lives and activities of shamans in five different regions: Siberia, China, Korea, and the Ryukyu islands of southern Japan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The essays show what type of people become shamans, what social roles they play, and how shamans actively draw from the worldviews of the communities in which they operate. As the first book in English to provide in-depth accounts of shamans from different regions of Asia, it allows students and scholars to view the diversity and similarities of shamans and their religions. Those interested in spiritual specialists, the anthropological study of religion, and local religions in Asia will be intrigued, if not entranced, by Shamans in Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in two volumes, the purpose of Jersey Folklore & Superstitions is three-fold: To bring all the previously published and any non-published material on Jersey folktales and superstitions together in one publication, to expand on the detail of this material and to place it in context by comparing it with similar or more complete traditions from the Gulf of St. Malo as a whole (Guernsey, Normandy and Brittany) and to consider its functions and origins. To this end they are further compared with traditions from Europe generally, with some examples from further afield and with mythologies worldwide. For Jersey readers this work will give an overview of their oral tradition, its significance and how it relates to the body of such traditions within Europe as a whole. For general readers the use of the Island’s traditions as a template for those elsewhere, the process of comparison with those from other regions and the attempt to outline the broad range of sources from which they are drawn, may give an insight into particular areas of folk tradition generally, such as fairy-lore, indigenous sorcery (witchcraft), domestic superstitions and the roles and origins of spectral animals and other beings. For this purpose, most chapters are broadly divided into four main sections. The Jersey material is presented first, followed by that from Guernsey, Normandy and Brittany, followed by an analysis using examples from further afield and from mythology. Each chapter concludes with a review and summary of this material. Liberal quotations of related ‘ditons’ or sayings in Jèrriais (the Jersey Language) are included with each chapter. The author has four previous publications; Jersey Superstitions in Etching & Poetry (hardcover 1981), An Introduction to Channel Islands’ Pewter (softcover 1993), Jersey Maritime Folklore (M/S format, 1996) and Sunbonnets in the Channel Islands & worldwide (CD-R 2005).

Book excerpt: In a world where demons exist, magic is the only defense against them. But the adventures of two orphaned boys change everything. Ruzu has magical powers and wields a golden cross of mysterious origin, a powerful weapon that can transform into a sword. Shika cannot use magic, but a darker, more powerful force sends a blade made of a "human" bone powered by the forces of darkness. Together, the two boys set out on a journey to free the one person who means more to them than anything else from the curse of a powerful demon. As they fight to save this far from ordinary people, they join a group of Magow Knights, each with one or more elemental powers of control linked to a device called a Leifa. No one knows the origin of the raw materials needed to create Leifa, but it is certain that humans would be unable to defend themselves without this magical device. But the main question is: will Shika and Ruzu succeed, or will darkness take over forever? This is the first part of a story about magic, demons, and the power of friendship and love that will end in war. But after a bloody, merciless battle, something bigger and more dangerous is coming...

Book excerpt: In Germany rises the majestic spirituality of Dr. Martin Luther. Life in the North of Europe is not as refined and leisurely as in the South. The somewhat rough, but very religious Germans are disappointed and angry with the Pope and the inappropriate and indulgent life-stile of the Papal Court. Nobles and peasants in Germany rise to protect Dr. Luther from the Holy Inquisition, the Pope and the Emperor. Where Savonarola failed, Dr. Luther is victorious. And the young Count of Regenstein, as narrator and friend of Luther, is able to escape from the easy, but purposeless life in Italy and find the way to a meaningful, real life in the North, and to his Heaven-gifted wife … At the same time, Albert of Sturmfeder – a young knight with an old name, but without fortune or family – must find an honourable way to establish himself in life to be able to marry the lady of his heart. The only way open to him is that of the sword. In Swabia, the Swabian League is fighting the Duke Ulrich of Wurttemberg for his estates. If Albert chooses the losing side, he must perish in the battle or share the banishment of his prince. If a duke loses his dukedom, he loses everything, he must leave his home and family behind – where could he hide? And how should he come back, without an army, money, or even a horse?
