Book excerpt: Since 1895, the University of Oklahoma football program has amassed some impressive numbers: seven national championships, 47 consecutive wins, 44 conference championships, 28 bowl wins, five Heisman Trophy winners, and more than 150 All-America players. In Legends of Oklahoma Sooners Football, Ray Dozier profiles 36 players and coaches who provided the talent and inspiration that put Sooner football on the national sports landscape. Many of those legends played before the dawn of the television era, but standouts such as Forest “Spot”Geyer, Tommy McDonald, Prentice Gautt (the first black football player at the University of Oklahoma), Clendon Thomas, and Bob Kalsu remain alive and well in the hearts and minds of loyal Sooner fans. The legends of Sooner stars such as Steve Owens, Joe Washington, Jack Mildren, the Selmon brothers, Billy Sims, Greg Pruitt, Tony Casillas, Brian Bosworth, Adrian Peterson, and Sam Bradford continue to grow with time. Coaching legends include Bennie Owen, Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer, and the all-time leader in wins, Bob Stoops. Legends of Oklahoma Sooners Football chronicles the players, coaches, rivalries, and events that transformed a club team that played its first games on a dusty territorial prairie into a national powerhouse. Steve Smith is not a well-adjusted adult. Blending wit and insight, Smith?s story of twenty-plus years following the team takes readers back to memorable game moments from 1980 to the new era under coach Bill Callahan, offering the uninitiated and the fellow fanatic alike a window on the world where fantasy and football meet, where dreams of glory and gritty gridiron realities forever join.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Ross Boyd stepped off the train in Norman, Oklahoma, on August 6, 1892, and looked toward the southwest. “There was not a tree or shrub in sight,” wrote the former Kansas school superintendent just hired to serve as the University of Oklahoma’s first president. “Behind me was a crude little town of 1,500 people, and before me was a stretch of prairie on which my helpers and I were to build an institution of culture.” By 1895, five years after the University’s official founding, the school boasted four faculty members (three men and one woman) and 100 students. Today the campus is home to more than 30,000 students and 2,700 full-time faculty and is one of the most respected public universities in the nation, with twenty-one colleges offering hundreds of majors at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral level. OU’s remarkable journey from that treeless prairie to its present standing as a world-class institution of learning unfolds in The Sooner Story. Arriving upon the university’s 125th anniversary, the book updates a history that last left off in 1980, when William Slater Banowsky was at the helm. Author Anne Barajas Harp examines the school’s history through the lens of each presidential administration from the beginning of David Ross Boyd’s tenure to the present moment in David Lyle Boren’s presidency, now in its third decade. In describing what each president encountered in his turn, she captures the unique character, challenges, and accomplishments of each administration, as these reflect the university’s growth and progress through the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. “Discouraged?” Boyd wrote at his arrival in 1892. “Not a bit. The sight was a challenge.” The Sooner Story conveys the inspiration and excitement of meeting and renewing that challenge over the past 125 years.

A pep talk from Vince Dooley is featured as is beloved mascot Uga, and the "Gator Stomp" that made Tim Tebow look even goofier than usual is highlighted for good measure. This entertaining chronicle argues for adoring Buck Belue while raking Rex Grossman over the coals, relating the fantastic coaching stories of the legendary W.A. Cunningham, Wally Butts, and Vince Dooley as well as up-close and personal chats.

Book excerpt: Welcome to my world. My story is written in diary format. I wrote it from June 16, 2013, to June 15, 2014. What I didn't know, as I was writing, was that I was capturing the last year of my son's life. Pat died, unexpectedly, on July 23, 2014, in a hospital psych ward. Suddenly, my diary morphed into a more poignant record than I'd anticipated, and after he died, I discovered Pat had been making regular posts on Facebook. I decided to add his comments to my own. I like stories where I can extrapolate from the singular to the universal--that is where I can identify with a common denominator in another person's experience. One early reader of my diary said, "Your story is so relatable." That's what I hope other readers will say. You may relate to my story if: You have a child (chilldren) you love more than your own life. You have a child who suffers from serious mental illness. You've lost a child--no matter what age. You're a member of the sandwich generation. You treasure conversations with children--especially when they're your grandchildren. Your cat or your dog is in charge of your household. Your bones are beginning to creak. You wake up each morning with a huge hole in your heart but you know, somehow, some way, you have to get up and put one foot in front of the other. You enjoy reading the other side of history--about ordinary people and their daily lives. You have a sense of humor. You've been thinking of leaving something for your descendants--a letter, story, diary, song, painting, or poem--but you haven't gotten around to it. Maybe my diary will spur you on. More notes about the format: I've added a Before section (Scenes from the Trenches). Going in, I want the reader to know "Yes, Houston, we really do have a problem." I've divided my diary into quarters--Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring. I introduce each with a poem--three of them are Pat's. I end with an After section I didn't see coming. As I was writing, I had no idea, from day to day, what stories were unfolding. I learn, right along with the reader, what will happen next. We're all on a journey. Thank you for going on this journey with me. Dede Dede posted her story in two-week increments at www.soonerthantomorrow.com. The following are readers' responses. Beautiful words with an undertone that has caught me . . . carrying me up and down. Such a good writer that I am grateful to be with you. I can borrow some courage here. --Janet So happy for the readers who will discover you. --Liz Dede, every one of your blog posts has a portion that I love so much that I take a screenshot and read it over and over. --Stacey Dede, I anxiously await each posting from your blog/book. You write with such skill, and not easy when it's so personal, but your passion sprinkled with humor are the reasons that this is successful. --Joan L. I've done this, the primal scream and the mother animal instinct. There can't be anything more painful, not even death. My son was a normal little boy and a normal young man until schizophrenia came calling. Now I feel so shattered. I love your diary. --J.H.D. I only this was a contrived drama. It's so visceral. You're an artist. --Heidi F.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first work to go beyond the popular myths of stock car racing to fully examine the sport's true history. NASCAR Nation: A History of Stock Car Racing in the United States details the ongoing saga of this quintessentially American pastime. Looking at the drivers, events, and teams, it positions NASCAR racing within larger social, economic, and cultural trends in an attempt to address the sport's phenomenal growth and popularity. This chronological examination of the evolution of stock car racing is the first history to go beyond the widely held myth that it was "invented" by Prohibition-era moonshiners. The book traces stock car racing history from its beginnings, to the formation of The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) in 1948, through today. Of course, readers will meet the sport's many colorful personalities, including the Earnhardts, Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon (who has raked in more than $70 million in career winnings), "Fireball" Roberts, Darrell Waltrip, Daytona pioneer Bill France, and women drivers like Janet Guthrie, Louise Smith, and Jennifer Jo Cobb. While the focus is on NASCAR, the book also examines other prominent stock car racing organizations to round out its comprehensive portrait.
