Book excerpt: This welcome volume encompasses the entire history of the bassoon, from its origins five centuries ago to its place in twenty-first-century music. James Kopp draws on new archival research and many years' experience playing the instrument to provide an up-to-date and lively portrait of today's bassoon and its intriguing predecessors. He discusses the bassoon's makers, its players, its repertory, its myths, and its audiences, all in unprecedented detail. The bassoon was invented in Italy in response to the need for a bass-register double-reed woodwind suitable for processionals and marching. Composers were quick to exploit its agility and unique timbre. Later, during the reign of Louis XIV, the instrument underwent a major redesign, giving voice to its tenor register. In the early 1800s new scientific precepts propelled a wave of invention and design modifications. In the twentieth century, the multiplicity of competing bassoon designs narrowed to a German (or Heckel) type and a French type, the latter now nearly extinct. The author examines the acoustical consequences of these various redesigns. He also offers new coverage of the bassoon's social history, including its roles in the military and church and its global use during the European Colonial period. Separate historical chapters devoted to contrabassoons and smaller bassoons complete the volume [Publisher description].

Book excerpt: This is the first study of the life and works of Benedetto Vinaccesi (1666-1719), who, despite his present-day obscurity, was a gifted and, in his day, much-admired Italian composer from the period of Corelli. His significant corpus of works includes operas, oratorios, sonatas, cantatas, and church music of many kinds, and Talbot's description brings to light their striking originality. More importantly, perhaps, since Vinaccesi's music harks back to an earlier generation of Italian composers (Legrenzi, Stradella, Colonna) yet also anticipates the later developments of Albinoni and Vivaldi, it constitutes an unusual amalgam of elements identified today as "middle" and "late" baroque, and Talbot's survey is able to place in focus many neglected aspects of stylistic evolution in the years around 1700. His chronicle of the Vinaccesi family and description of the "citizen" class to which it belonged is invaluable for the light it sheds on the place of the composer in seventeenth-century Italy. He also provides a wealth of other information on the society, institutions, and local history of Italy (especially Brescia and Venice) in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The result is a rounded portrait of an important musician, which also serves to illuminate many aspects of the Italian baroque.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Trombone, the first title in the new series American Wind Band, is a comprehensive account of the development of the trombone from its initial form as a 14th-century Medieval trumpet to its alterations in the 15th century; from its marginalized use in a particular Renaissance ensemble to its acceptance in various kinds of artistic and popular music in the 19th and 20th centuries. David M. Guion accesses new and important primary source materials to present the full sweep of the instrument's history, placing particular emphasis on the people who played the instrument, the music they performed, and the relevant cultural contexts. After a general overview, the material is presented in two main sections: the first traces the development of the trombone itself and examines the literature written about it, and the second investigates the history of performance on the instrument--the ensembles it participated in, the occasions in which it took part, the people who played it, and the social, intellectual, political, economic, and technological forces that impinged on that history. Guion analyzes the trombone's place in countries all over the world and in many styles of music, such as art, opera, popular, and world music. An appendix of transcriptions of selected primary source documents, including translations, and a comprehensive bibliography round out this important reference. Fully illustrated with more than 80 images, A History of the Trombone appeals not just to trombonists but to students, scholars, and fans of all musical instruments.
