Book excerpt: The summer soccer season is underway and the soccer ball isn’t the only thing that can be trapped. Players can be trapped, too! Chris and Jaylon are very surprised when Rebecca phones and asks for help in solving a mystery. What’s up? The three had met during a Viking hockey tournament earlier that year and solved a mystery together. They formed the Viking Club Detective Agency on the spot, pledging to call on each other if any other mysteries cropped up. And that was that. They never heard from each other again — until now. The three of them are playing for the same soccer association on different teams, and Chris and Jaylon have their own problems to worry about that summer. However, when they discover that Rebecca is actually under suspicion of having committed a real crime, they put their own worries aside and concentrate on trapping a thief. Can the Viking Club Agency score again? They had better come up with a good plan or Rebecca will pay the price. And how is Chris going to get through this terrible summer? Will Jaylon find a way to help a soccer buddy on his team? Trouble, trouble, trouble!

Book excerpt: The day the blizzard started, no one knew that it was going to keep snowing for a week. That for those in its path, it would become not just a matter of keeping warm, but of staying alive. . . .Scotty and his friends Pete and Jason are among the last seven kids at their high school waiting to get picked up that day, and they soon realize that no one is coming for them. Still, it doesn't seem so bad to spend the night at school, especially when distractingly hot Krista and Julie are sleeping just down the hall. But then the power goes out, then the heat. The pipes freeze, and the roof shudders. As the days add up, the snow piles higher, and the empty halls grow colder and darker, the mounting pressure forces a devastating decision. . . .Michael Northrop is the New York Times bestselling author of TombQuest, an epic book and game adventure series featuring the magic of ancient Egypt. Book Synopsis Unlocking Leadership Mindtraps by : Jennifer Garvey Berger
Download or read book Unlocking Leadership Mindtraps written by Jennifer Garvey Berger and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author and consultant Jennifer Garvey Berger has worked with all types of leaders—from top executives at Google to nonprofit directors who are trying to make a dent in social change. She hears a version of the same plea from every client in nearly every sector around the world: "I know that complexity and uncertainty are testing my instincts, but I don't know which to trust. Is there some way to know what to do when I can't know what's next?" Her newest work is an answer to this plea. Using her background in adult development, complexity theories, and leadership consultancy, Garvey Berger discerns five pernicious and pervasive "mind traps" to frame the book. These are: the desire for simple stories, our sense that we are right, our desire to get along with others in our group, our fixation with control, and our constant quest to protect and defend our egos. In addition to understanding why these natural impulses steer us wrong in a fast-moving world, leaders will get powerful questions and approaches that help them escape these patterns.

Download or read book Trapped! written by Robert K. Murray and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2013-04-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When Floyd Collins became trapped in a cave in southern Kentucky in early 1925, the sensationalism and hysteria of the rescue attempt generated America's first true media spectacle, making Collins's story one of the seminal events of the century. The crowds that gathered outside Sand Cave turned the rescue site into a carnival. Collins's situation was front-page news throughout the country, hourly bulletins interrupted radio programs, and Congress recessed to hear the latest word. Trapped! is both a tense adventure and a brilliant historical recreation of the past. This new edition includes a new epilogue revealing information about the Floyed Collins story that has come to light since the book was first published.
Book Synopsis The Value of Empathy by : Maria Baghramian
Download or read book The Value of Empathy written by Maria Baghramian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Value of Empathy explores various approaches to understanding empathy and investigates its moral and practical role. The central role of empathy in understanding others, and the need for it in our social and inter-personal encounters, is widely acknowledged by philosophers, social scientists and psychologists alike. Discussions of empathy abound, not only in more specialised academic publications, but also in traditional and social media. Yet neither a clear understanding, nor a uniform definition of this relatively new term is available. Indeed, one difficulty in discussing empathy, in philosophy and beyond, is the profusion of definitions; the difficulty is compounded by a lack of clarity in the distinction between empathy and cognate concepts such as sympathy and compassion. This book has two aims: Chapters 1–5 seek to address the dual concerns of the lack of clarity and profusion of interpretations by suggesting new ways of approaching the topic. The second aim of the book is to connect the more abstract discussions of empathy with its normative functions. Chapters 6–8 engage with the theoretical concerns relevant to the ethics of empathy and raise interesting points about its significance in ethical thought and action. The final four chapters focus on the practical normative significance of empathy by examining the connections between empathy, vulnerability and care in circumstances of ill health. The chapters in this book were originally published in the International Journal of Philosophical Studies.

Book Synopsis Earthquake Protection by : Andrew Coburn
Download or read book Earthquake Protection written by Andrew Coburn and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-02-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the successful first edition of Earthquake Protection there have been 110 lethal earthquakes, killing 130 000 people; there have also been significant developments in the field of earthquake risk management, particularly in the modelling and analysis of risk for insurance and financial services. Furthermore, major earthquake disasters, such as the 1994 Northridge earthquake in California, the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan and the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake in Turkey have occurred. The experience and knowledge gained through these events have improved our understanding of how to manage, mitigate and work towards the prevention of similar catastrophes. The 1990s were in fact the costliest decade on record in terms of disaster management due to such seismic events, placing unprecedented pressure on the insurance industry in particular, and changing its view of earthquake protection. Significantly revised and updated, this second edition continues to provide a comprehensive overview of how to reduce the impact of earthquakes on people and property, and implement best practice in managing the consequences of such disasters. It also includes significant coverage of the techniques of modelling earthquake catastrophe. Each chapter deals with a separate aspect of protection, and covers a wide range of economic and social conditions, drawing on the authors' considerable personal experience and with reference to real life examples. Key features include: Recent event coverage Modern developments in the theory and practice of planning and engineering loss estimation techniques, along with new engineering techniques such as microzonation and hazard-mapping Historic buildings experience An entirely new chapter on 'Earthquakes and Finance' This valuable book provides essential reading for earthquake and structural engineers and geoscientists, as well as insurers and loss prevention specialists, risk managers and assessors involved in managing earthquake risk, urban and regional planners, and emergency management agencies.
Book Synopsis Into the Unknown by : Michael P. Ghiglieri
Download or read book Into the Unknown written by Michael P. Ghiglieri and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2024-09-15 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veteran wilderness guide Michael P. Ghiglieri takes you into the unknown—among white-water rapids, crocodiles, hippos, gorillas, lions, and impossible waterfalls. His riveting memoir not only serves up true high adventure, it also presents the ecology, natural history, conservation (or the lack of it), and exploration history of nine far-flung wilderness regions across the globe—including the never-to-be-repeated white-water run on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon during the Bureau of Reclamation’s 1983 super flood of ninety-seven thousand cubic feet per second; the first summit-to-sea descent of the Alas River exploring Sumatra’s new Gunung Leuser National Park, a last redoubt for wild orangutans and other rare species; and the “impossible” run of the Alsek River from the Yukon to Alaska in the world’s largest international conservation area. Into the Unknown reveals what the natural world looks like through a professional’s eyes during “adventure” travel, when things start sliding toward the edge. This insider memoir recounts ten sagas of extreme expeditions into Earth’s most amazing wilderness regions to illustrate their realities, science, allure, history, risks to life and limb, and ultimate fates. Many of these regions have now vanished to “progress.” Others are imperiled. Only a few are protected. But all are, or were, places where exotic beauty and danger are inseparable.
