Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Remarks on the State of the Established Church in Ireland Into active co-operation with the bold' unscrupulous destructive. With improvement ever in its month, it is only active in pulling down; and claiming public spirit even to monopoly, its views are bounded by the narrowest limits of party, and its schemes coneen trate within the closest circle of self-interest. Against the spacious arts then of Liberalism, I would urge all to be 011 their guard. If you wish to preserve what you hold most precious - your civil and religious rights and privileges - you must make common cause against the common enemy. Wait not till you are attacked on your own ground, but show a jealousy of aggression from whatever quarter it may threaten. Public opinion can now press with re sistless weight on the legislature. Let this be felt for good as well as for evil, and enforce your determination to uphold the Church and State in their integrity by every method the Constitution allows. Your friends will thereby be encouraged, and your adversaries lose confidence, and you will maintain the cause with a fairer prospect of success. The issue is indeed in the hands ofa higher power than that of man, but we are not the less called upon to strenuous exertion; and if we cordially unite towards mutual protection, neither blinded by prejudices nor deceived by vain fallacies, I see no reason to fear but that 'that Providence, who has preserved us our present blessings through many dangers and difficulties, will continue them uninjured through succeeding generations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case of the Established Church of Ireland This makes a most important difference. I grant, that if the Ecclesiastical persons alone were concerned, it might be very reasonable to say, - These men have no right or title to the incomes which they enjoy beyond their own lives; and provided the same amount is secured to them for that time, they suffer no injury or injustice, if a different appropriation of their incomes is made, when they are taken away. But this is putting out of sight the important fact that they are not the Church, but a part, and a small part of it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Church From the Point of View of One of Its Layman They know the weak points of their Church better than those to whom it is only a question of politics, because they know them from personal experience; they think it however a question need ing the most deliberate and careful judgment of the best minds, not only on account of its great intrinsic difficulties, but because it touches all concerned in their deepest feelings, and in the best (and worst) parts of their nature, and because there is great danger of real mischief being done by a mistaken course, in the increase of religious strife - Ireland's greatest curse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Church and Its Formularies: A Letter to the Lord Primate of All Ireland After these remarks your Grace will not be astonished at the avowal that to me the advantage or disadvantage of the Committee appointed in the terms of the Duke of Abercorn's amendment turns upon one question of overpowering im portance, Does it, or does it not, by the letter of the resolution from which it takes its appointment, open the door to any possible revision at present, and for Ireland alone - irrespective of the English Church - of the existing formularies If it does not, it may be desirable or not, on general grounds, but I shall have nothing to say to it if it does - however valuable it may be in other respects - it carries within itself, in my opinion, the seeds of fatal mischief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Church: A Political View of the Question Church's bitterest foes, and supported with all their power by the enemies of all true religion in this country, and to seek instead such an amelioration of the existing relations of Church and State, as will give the Church an adequate voice in the regulation of her own affairs and so remove most of the existing evils of which we complain. Patience under trial is God's way to good. Impatient. Action may end in deplorable and lasting evil. We have said nothing here about Disendowment. Its effect can best be described in the words of the Bishop of Lincoln, In my Diocese, said the Bishop, it would pauperise the Priesthood and paganise the poor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on the Points at Issue Between the Established Church and the National Board of Education in Ireland Of this petition I had never heard. But it is not my object, as far as I am concerned, to attribute any blame to the conductors. If the excellent Prelate, who of course must have taken the lead, had concluded that, as I have the happiness of agreeing with him on so many points, I concurred with him also m the prayer of this petition; and had he actually put down my name, I should not have been offended nor surprised, but rather have been grateful to his lordship for such a proof of free and friendly confidence. But let this matter stand as it may, - let it be that by an error of the Evening Mail, the diocese of Cashel has been mentioned, or that, by a momentary inadvertence on the part of Mr. Shaw, these words were introduced; still the appearance of them in the public papers has turned the balance, so as to decide me on the publication of the following pages. If I cannot reasonably suppose that they will have much influence upon others, it will be a satisfaction to my own mind not to be misunderstood on points so frequently discussed and on which it is so painful either to give an apparent consent by silence, or to engage in endless disputation.
