The case of plane Couette flow has been solved by the classical energy method of Orr. For two-dimensional disturbances of any magnitude the presence of elasticity has been found to stabilize the flow. This result suggests that the viscous sublayer thickness must increase during the so-called Toms phenomenon. It has been found that the results are identical for three fluids, namely the second-order fluid and the Walters fluids A' and B', although the normal stress behavior of these fluids are quite different. This insensitivity to the constitutive equation has been shown to be a result of the two-dimensionality of the problem. Linear stability theory has been used to investigate the stability of two flows of the Oldroyd fluid, namely the plane Poiseuille flow and the circular Couette flow. For both flows the presence of elasticity has been found to destabilize the flow and to increase the critical wavenumber.

Book excerpt: We investigate in this thesis, the problem of stability of thermo-viscoelastic fluid flow between rotating coaxial cylinders. By using the thermo-viscoelastic constitutive equations given by Eringen, we reduce the equations of motion into a form suitable for stability analysis. The course of reduction which we follow yields some interesting intermediate results. The solution for the steady state couette flow problem is found. Interestingly enough, the velocity field for this problem is found to be identical with the classical viscous case and the case of a Reiner-Rivlin fluid, but the temperature and pressure fields are different. The non-dimensional forms of the equations of motion governing the couette flow of thermo-viscoelastic fluids in a heat reservoir are given. These equations are reduced further by considering a small gap between the cylinders and by imposing some physically reasonable mechanical and geometrical restrictions on the flow. This results in a secular equation which forms a characteristic value problem. The solution of the characteristic value problem has been obtained and this yields a criterion for stability in terms of a critical Taylor number. In general, the critical values of Taylor numbers are found to be higher than corresponding ones in classical hydrodynamic stability problems, which implies that thermo-viscoelastic fluids are more stable, in a couette flow, than classical viscous fluids under a similar situation. Comparing this result with existing investigations in non- Newtonian fluids we find that, like Bingham fluids, thermoviscoelastic fluids are more stable than viscous and Reiner-Rivlin fluids.

Book excerpt: Viscoelasticity and Rheology covers the proceedings of a symposium by the same title, conducted by the Mathematics Research Center held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on October 16-18, 1984. The contributions to the symposium are divided into four broad categories, namely, experimental results, constitutive theories, mathematical analysis, and computation. This 16-chapter work begins with experimental topics, including the motion of bubbles in viscoelastic fluids, wave propagation in viscoelastic solids, flows through contractions, and cold-drawing of polymers. The next chapters covering constitutive theories explore the molecular theories for polymer solutions and melts based on statistical mechanics, the use and limitations of approximate constitutive theories, a comparison of constitutive laws based on various molecular theories, network theories and some of their advantages in relation to experiments, and models for viscoplasticity. These topics are followed by discussions of the existence, regularity, and development of singularities, change of type, interface problems in viscoelasticity, existence for initial value problems and steady flows, and propagation and development of singularities. The remaining chapters deal with the numerical simulation of flow between eccentric cylinders, flow around spheres and bubbles, the hole pressure problem, and a review of computational problems related to various constitutive laws. This book will prove useful to chemical engineers, researchers, and students.

It begins with an introduction to phenomena observed in viscoelastic flows, the formulation of mathematical equations to model such flows, and the behavior of various models in simple flows. It also discusses the asymptotics of the high Weissenberg limit, the analysis of flow instabilities, the equations of viscoelastic flows, jets and filaments and their breakup, as well as several other topics.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents theoretical and experimental studies of flows of elastic liquids. Falling into this category are particularly the melts and concentrated solutions of such flexible-chain polymers as polyethylene, polyisobutylene and polypropylene, all of which are widely used in polymer processing. These polydisperse polymers vary greatly, from batch to batch, in their mechanical properties and 20% variation in a property is believed to be good enough. l 7 All recent books - devoted to the rheology of polymers do not answer the question of which constitutive equations should be used for solving the fluid mechanic problems of polymer processing in the usual case of an appreciable nonlinear region of deformation where nonlinear effects of shear and extensional elasticity are very important. Viscoelastic constitut ive equations cited commonly (see, e.g. Refs 5 and 6) do not describe simultaneously even the simplest cases of deformations, viz. simple shear and uniaxial extension. Moreover, some of them are internally inconsist ent and sometimes display highly unstable behaviour in simple flows without any fundamental reasons. Even more respected molecular ap free from these defects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of stability aims at understanding the abrupt changes which are observed in fluid motions as the external parameters are varied. It is a demanding study, far from full grown, whose most interesting conclusions are recent. I have written a detailed account of those parts of the recent theory which I regard as established. Acknowledgements I started writing this book in 1967 at the invitation of Clifford Truesdell. It was to be a short work on the energy theory of stability and if I had stuck to that I would have finished the writing many years ago. The theory of stability has developed so rapidly since 1967 that the book I might then have written would now have a much too limited scope. I am grateful to Truesdell, not so much for the invitation to spend endless hours of writing and erasing, but for the generous way he has supported my efforts and encouraged me to higher standards of good work. I have tried to follow Truesdell's advice to write this work in a clear and uncomplicated style. This is not easy advice for a former sociologist to follow; if I have failed it is not due to a lack of urging by him or trying by me. My research during the years 1969-1970 was supported in part by a grant from the Guggenheim foundation to study in London.

Book excerpt: During the last decades a considerable effort has been made on the computation of the isothermal flow of viscoelastic fluids. In fact the activities related to this particular field of non-Newtonian fluid mechanics have focused on the following questions: which type of constitutive equation describes non-Newtonian fluid behaviour; how to measure fluid parameters; and what type of computational scheme leads to reliable, stable and cost-effective computer programs. During the same period, typical non-Newtonian fluid phenomena have been experimentally examined, such as the flow through a `four-to-one' contraction, the flow around a sphere or separation flow, providing fresh challenges for numerical modellers. Apart from momentum transport, however, fluid flow is strongly influenced by heat treansport in most real industrial operations in which non-Newtonian fluids are processed. The IUTAM Symposium on `Numerical Simulation of Nonisothermal Flow of Viscoelastic Liquids' held at Rolduc Abbey in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, November 1--3, 1993, was organised to monitor the state of affairs in regard to the influence of nonisothermal effects on the flow of a viscoelastic liquid. The present collection of papers gives an overview of what has been achieved so far. It is a milestone in the rapidly emerging and exciting new field in non-Newtonian fluid mechanics.
