This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the opening volume of a series that represents the first modern, extensive study of the planktic foraminifera of the Late Cretaceous Age. This group of microscopical single-celled protistans are the most used in the biostratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous successions, and, from this perspective, this book is of paramount importance for specialists in oil industry and academia. This first volume is dedicated to one iconic group of planktics, the globotruncanids. It describes 61 species that are grouped into thirteen genera, illustrating them with high-quality photographs that emphasize the spectacular morphology of this foraminiferal group. With emphasis on the test ultrastructures and high-detail morphological characters in concert with the features pertaining of the general test architecture, this work provides the most comprehensive perspective on this group of foraminifera. The work will provide specialists and students with a wealth of ready-to-use data in a wide array of applications, from biostratigraphy to evolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book combines interdisciplinary research results using structural geology, geophysics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeontology, palaeomagnetism and subsidence modelling obtained through the MEBE (Middle East Basins Evolution) Programme and other groups in the South Caspian and Northern and Central Iran. A great part of the volume is devoted to Northern Iran (Alborz, Binalud and Koppeh Dagh belts), dealing mainly with the Late Palaeozoic and the Mesozoic Eras. Two papers present subsidence models of the South Caspian Basin since the Jurassic and three papers focus on Central Iran. The data and models in this compilation of papers present a detailed picture and a very comprehensive understanding of the Late Palaeozoic to Cenozoic evolution of the South Caspian and North Iran to Central Iran basins. Geodynamic evolution and sedimentation are mainly controlled by the closure of the Palaeo-Tethys due to collision of Eocimmerian blocks with south Laurasia, opening of the South Caspian Basin, and Neo-Tethys ocean closure associated with Arabia-Eurasia collision.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers presented to Professor Tom Barnard by former students, colleagues and friends to mark thirty-two years of teaching and research in micropalaeontology at University College London. This period represents the major part of Tom Barnard's career with microfossils, which actually began rather earlier, but in 1949 his first postgraduate students were registered. Since then some 150 students have worked for higher degrees studying foraminifera, ostracods, calcareous nannofossils, dino of Research flagellates and palynomorphs, in company with a series Assistants and Visiting Scientists. The nature of micropalaeontology at 'UC' under Tom Barnard has always been unashamedly biostratigraphical. As a result many students have entered and continue to enter the petroleum industry, not least of all because their mentor has always had a pragmatic view of academic research and its direction. Despite this emphasis, with a particular attention to Mesozoic foraminifera, a major investigation of Recent Caribbean foraminiferal faunas has been carried out and most recently MSc classes have worked with material from the continental shelf of southern Africa. Work with Mesozoic ostracods was initiated in 1956 and during the past decade a growing number of students have concentrated on calcareous nannofossils. A book sum marising the results of biostratigraphical work with nannofossils is at present in the press (Lord, A. R. (ed. ) A stratigraphical index of calcareous nanno fossils. Chichester: Ellis Horwood).

This book was released on 2023-06-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the microbiota of the intertrappean beds in the Chhindwara District, Madhya Pradesh, India. In this work, special emphasis is placed on the microbiota from the Late Cretaceous-Early Palaeocene transition of the central Narmada River region. Recently, the intertrappean beds of the Eastern Deccan Volcanic Province (one of the subprovinces of the Deccan Volcanic Province) have received considerable attention, which resulted in the addition of some significant biotic assemblages to the existing record from the Dindori-Chhindwara area of the province. The biotic assemblages include charophytes, ostracods, foraminiferans, fishes, frogs, lizards, turtles, crocodiles, and mammals. In spite of the recent discoveries, the known fossil record of the Late Cretaceous-Early Palaeocene biota of India is not sufficient and thus does not permit us to speculate on the possible impact of environmental changes triggered by the Deccan volcanic lava flows on the contemporary biota and to precisely document their palaeoecologic, palaeoenvironmental and palaeobiogeographic implications. The recent biotic reports from the intertrappean beds exposed in the Chhindwara region of the Eastern Deccan Volcanic Province clearly indicate that these beds have a vast potential in terms of fossil content, which could reveal new and dissimilar biotic remains when compared to the Western Deccan Volcanic Province. The record of diverse accumulations of freshwater charophytes, brackish to freshwater ostracods, and planktic foraminiferal and fish assemblages from the intertrappean beds of Jhilmili and adjacent areas of Early Danian (P1a) age and lying just north of Chhindwara town and in the heart of peninsular India has intriguing implications for defining the age limits of the basaltic flows. The occurrence of non-marine taxa, for example, algae, molluscs, and vertebrates, associated with brackish water ostracods in the nearby Singpur and Mohgaon Kalan localities of the Chhindwara region, has also raised concerns about the sedimentary environments of these intertrappean beds. The new finds (presented in this book) prove useful for the better understanding of the palaeoecology and palaeoenvironment of the biota and also throw light on various paleobiogeographic models proposed for the northward drifting Indian plate. The microbiotic assemblages of the intertrappean beds of the eastern Deccan volcanic province at District Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh are documented in this book. The microbiota of the central Narmada River region, the charophytes, ostracods, planktic foraminifera, and fishes, receive special attention in this study.

Book excerpt: The role of fossil planktonic foraminifera as markers for biostratigraphical zonation and correlation underpins most drilling of marine sedimentary sequences and is key to hydrocarbon exploration. The first - and only - book to synthesise the whole biostratigraphic and geological usefulness of planktonic foraminifera, Biostratigraphic and Geological Significance of Planktonic Foraminifera unifies existing biostratigraphic schemes and provides an improved correlation reflecting regional biogeographies.Renowned micropaleontologist Marcelle K. Boudagher-Fadel presents a comprehensive analysis of existing data on fossil planktonic foraminifera genera and their phylogenetic evolution in time and space. This important text, now in its Second Edition, is in considerable demand and is now being republished by UCL Press.

Book excerpt: "This volume atempts to explore and clarify the relationship among the geological records, the extinctions, and the causes of catastrophes for life in Earth's history. Most of the papers address the geological record and the extinctions across the Cretaceou-Teriary boundary, and the buried Chicxulub structure that is now consensually deemed to be of impact origin and to be intimately related to that boundary."
