Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an account of how a small institute with all its limitations and constraints became a leading management institute of national stature. It provides the chronology of new measures introduced, policies implemented, and advances made, particularly in the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, and faculty development. The story gains much significance from serious constraints the institute faced with regard to human and financial resources and the steps it took to overcome its limitations. Many progressive and unconventional methods followed by the institute over a period of time created unexpected spin-offs. A better learning environment, improved educational experience and quality of life of students, increased placement opportunities, and widened scope made a strong impact and enabled the institute for wide industry acceptance and interaction with other management scientists and bodies. The book tells the story about the T. A. Pai Management Institute (TAPMI), which, despite all odds, became a leading B-School in the country from a small, lesser-known institute.

It considers the practice of ID in city management by reviewing two related cases; on organizational strengthening and building a planning capability - both in local government. The synthesizing chapters offer some guidelines on, and tests for, ID in city management practice. The book therefore seeks to identify some general principles to guide the ID process in relation to third world city management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this book tells the story, from various viewpoints, of the building of local capacity to carry forward the economic and social transition process which started in the late 1980s. The post-communist government and the Balcerowicz reform could not, by themselves, transform Poland. External know-how was needed to provide expertise and to help develop pathways and partnerships. Management and Organisation Development was a major theme in multilateral and bilateral assistance programmes for Poland throughout the 1990s. Scholarships and direct training were provided by some donors. Most of the help in this sector from the British Know How Fund went into developing regionally-based business schools and management training centres. Part I of this book gives the historical and technical background from both the Polish and donor points of view. Part II looks more closely at some of the technical issues in the process-the development of trainers and training methods and materials, of new and relevant courses, of international partnerships and of local markets. The final part of the book assesses the current context in which Polish management educators and trainers operate and outlines some of the issues (EU accession, the attitudes of managers, the impact of IT, and so on) which will have to be faced by both business schools and practising managers in the next decade.

Book excerpt: The theme of "Learning in a Changing Environment" reflects the way in which educational thinking in Higher Education has undergone a rapid change throughout the world. The EDINEB network consists of people who see the role of educationalists as providing a framework for learning rather than taking a traditional approach of "chalk and talk". The key to the success of this fourth conference (and these articles selected from it) lies in the supportive role delegates give to each other in sharing experiences (and problems!) in a changing environment. The network has grown because ofthe commitment of members to form what is in effect a multinational self-help group which is dedicated to continual improvement in the educational environment. This fourth EDINEB conference brought together 95 registrations from over 21 countries. The 16 papers selected represent a cross-section of the articles submitted to the authors and the book is divided into four sections. 1 LEARNING OBJECTIVES AND PROGRAMME STRUCTURES The first section examines how different programmes (in different of countries and cultures) have been structured to meet the particular needs both the participants/students and the economic environment within which they operate.

Book excerpt: The critical importance of well-performing public institutions and good governance for development and poverty reduction has come to the forefront in the 1990s. Reforming public institutions is a complex and difficult task. This publication is primarily intended as a guide for World Bank staff but it is also intended to serve the broader development community. It outlines a strategy which envisions significant changes in the focus of the Bank's work in this area. Some of these changes such as an enhanced focus on governance, capacity building and anticorruption, are already underway. The agenda for the next three years is to continue to foster these changes through a the advancement of analytical tools, new approaches t the design of lending operations, expanded emphasis on partnership with clients and other donors and progressive shifts in staffing, incentives and evaluation techniques. Included as an annex is an inventory of the Bank's governance and institutional reform programs which are in place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which was first published in 1992 and then updated in 2007, provides a tool for dealing with the legal and institutional aspects of water resources management within national contexts and at the level of transboundary water resources. Like its two previous editions, it seeks to cover all aspects that need to be known in order to attain good water governance, but it provides updates concerning developments since 2007. These relate, inter alia, to the following: - the “greening” of water law, which calls for the progressive integration of environmental law principles into domestic and international water law; - the adoption, by the International Law Commission in 2008, of the Draft Articles on the Law of Transboundary Aquifers, and subsequent developments; - the emergence of the right to water as a self-standing human right; - the adoption of domestic water laws supporting integrated water resources management (IWRM) and enhanced public participation in planning and decision making; - the integration into these laws of tools facilitating adaptive water management as a response to climate variability and change; - progress in the implementation of EU law; - recent international agreements and judicial decisions; - efforts of regional organizations other than the EU to steer cooperation in the management of transboundary water resources and the harmonization of national laws; - institutional mechanisms for the management of transboundary water resources (surface and underground). Unique in its scope and nature, the book identifies the legal and institutional issues arising in connection with water resources management and provides guidelines for possible solutions in a manner accessible to a wide range of readers. Thus, it is a useful reference for lawyers and non-lawyers — engineers, hydrologists, hydrogeologists, economists, sociologists — dealing with water resources within government institutions, river basin commissions, international organizations, financing institutions and academic institutions, among other things, and also for students of disciplines related to water resources.
