Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Impressions of the United States This small book is founded on four articles which have appeared in the Fortnightly Review for August and September 1882 and in Longman's Magazine for November 1882 and January 1883. The substance of those articles is here, together with an amount of new matter at least as large as the articles themselves. They represent observations made in the United States during a stay which lasted from October 1881 to April 1882. In the course of that stay I saw something of most of the chief Northern States; but I did not get further west than St. Louis, or further south than the northern part of Virginia. The "impressions" are of course those of one who looks at things for his own purposes and from his own point of view. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America, Old and New: Impressions of Six Months in the States The scenery which Europe has chosen for its type of America is the prairie land of the Middle West. So far as any choice could be made this is not unfair, for there is more of this scenery in the States than of any other, but the impression created is after all a partial one. There are vast regions in America which for better or for worse are very different from the Middle West. There are, to begin with, the veritable deserts of the South Coast, the great Sahara of the continent. It stretches hundreds of miles inland from the Rockies, a wilderness of rocks and sands. Few level tracts occur; ridges and peaks of rock rise everywhere. Vegetation is seldom quite absent; it is vegetation of the classic desert type, thorny bushes, aloes and cactus trees, useless to man and beast. There is no American camel to crop their dry and bitter foliage; lizards and rattlesnakes are the native inheritors of the wilderness. Human eyes may look on the scene with various feelings. It is now the solemn waste of the Egyptian and Arabian sands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
