Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Important Insects of Illinois Shade Trees and Shrubs The full-grown caterpillar (fig. I, e, f, h) is rather strongly marked, withga broad velvety black stripe on the back and sulphur yellow sides spotted with black, while the under side of the body is pale green. It is unusually variable in color, however, there being both light and dark forms. It is from two and a fourth to three inches long, and has a hornlike appendage projecting from the hinder end of the back. The young caterpillars (fig. I, c) are pale yellow and spotted with black. There are probably but two generations in Illinois. The caterpillars leave the trees and go into the ground to pupate (fig. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peach Insects of Illinois and Their Control Because the northern and the southern limits of Illinois are nearly 400 miles apart, climate in the southern counties differs markedly from that in the northern part of the state. The longer growing season in the southern counties allows some kinds of insects to produce more broods each year, and the milder climate there results in lower winter mortality. Part of the peach-growing region of southern Illinois (most of the area south of Carbondale and Harrisburg) is unglaciated. Because of the hilly character of the unglaciated area, many orchards there are irregular in shape and they have extensive borders bounded by woods or brushy fencerows in which some insects hibernate and others develop. Such orchards are harder to cultivate and spray than the rectangular-shaped orchards common on level land, and insects usually are more numerous in them than in the prairie orchards. The principal peach-growing areas of Illinois are indicated in fig. 1. The author is Consulting Entomologist of Southern Illinois University as well as Associate Entomologist of the Illinois Natural History Survey. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eleventh Report of the State Entomologist: On the Noxious and Beneficial Insects of the State of Illinois Dear Sir: In submitting the "Eleventh Report of the State Entomologist on the Noxious and Beneficial Insects of the State of Illinois," allow me to express my thanks to you and the Board for the encouragement I have always received from you in this work. I am happy to state with even more emphasis than at the time of submitting my previous report, that the demand for these works is still on the increase in our own State and elsewhere. The outside demand has in fact become so great, that I have been compelled to ask your Secretary to meet it, as far as possible, with copies bound with the Transactions of the Board, as the two hundred separate copies allowed me for distribution were wholly inadequate for this purpose. Although I have material on hand sufficient to make a report about the same size as that of last year, it has been thought best that I cut it down so that it shall not exceed, when printed, one hundred and twenty-five pages. In the preparation of this report I have been aided by Mr. D. W. Coquillett, who resides in the northern portion of the State, and was engaged in making observations for me in that section during the past season; also by Prof. French. As you are well aware, the predictions I made last year (1880) that the Chinch-bugs would probably appear in injurious numbers in 1881 unfortunately for our farmers has proved only too true. This fact tends strongly to confirm me in the belief that my deductions, drawn from a comparison of the weather records of our State and the adjoining sections, are substantially correct, and that the periodicity indicated in my last report is a climatic law of this portion of our country. Judging, therefore, by this apparent periodicity, and what has been ascertained in reference to the history, habits, and cause of increase of these pests (the Chinch-bugs), I have elsewhere ventured to predict with much confidence that they will do no material injury in 1882. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twenty-Fourth Report of the State Entomologist on the Noxious and Beneficial Insects: Of the State of Illinois In a general article on The Corn Bill -bugs in Illinois, pub lished In my Eleventh Report as State Entomologist (pages 1-az6), brief account was given of observations made In fields near Taylor ville, Christian county, in 1902 (page 7) but the data in my pos session concerning injuries to corn at this place and their relation to previous crops and to the history of the land, were not fully util ized in that paper. Our observations and correspondence have made it evident for some time that bill - bug injury to corn is imperfectly appreciated by com growers and but little understood by them, and it consequently seems desirable that the careful work done on this insect injury near T aylorville should now be fully reported and thor oughly discussed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Annual Report on the Noxious Insects of the State of Illinois, 1867 The second of the two Guests is a species of Midge, belonging to the genus Sciam and to the same group of Two-winged Flies as the notorious Wheat Midge, commonly known in Illinois as the Bed Weevil, (oecidomyia tritici, Kirby), and the equally notorious Hes sian Fly (ceciclomyia destructor, Say). We may call it in English the Grape Midge. It is a small, slender, long-legged, blackish Fly, measuring to the tips of its wings about one-tenth of an inch, and with no conspicuous markings whatever. The genus to which it belongs is a rather extensive one, no less than seven U. S. Species (not three as in correctly stated by Dr. Fitch, N. Y. Rep. I. P. 255) having been de scribed by a single author, T'hos. Say; and moreover the species are difficult to distinguish from one another, owing to the monotonous uniformity of their coloration.* I think that my grape-inhabiting species is probably identical with the Fickle Midge (sciara [molobras] inconstans) of Dr. Fitch, which is described by him as making its appearance at the same unseasonable time of the year - the latter part of December - and as running about in the same fickle, rapid, rest less manner as I have observed mine to do. Of this Guest - y, from the same lot of about fifty infested grapes from which I had previ ously bred the Grape Curculio and the Guest-beetle. I obtained No vember 19th - 29th, no less than thirty-five specimens; and probably. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
