This book was released on 1976 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental investigations are being carried out in a broad area of low-temperature and solid-state physics which includes superconductivity, magnetism in metals and solid helium. The pair-field susceptibility of superconductors is being studied. A propagating mode in the phase of the superconducting order parameter is under investigation. Superconducting fluctuations are being used to probe critical fluctuations in magnetic systems using the proximity effect. Heat capacities of superconducting films in the vicinity of T sub c are also being investigated. The properties of thin film solid solutions of sodium in ammonia are being studied. Nuclear orientation studies of the dilute magnetic impurity problem in metals in the 1 mK temperature region are being carried out. Refrigeration requirements for this work are being met using enhanced hyperfine nuclear cooling. (Author).

This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook contains information essential for successful experiments at low temperatures. The first chapters describe the low-temperature properties of liquids and solid matter, including liquid helium. Most of the book is devoted to refrigeration techniques and the physics on which they rely, the definition of temperature, thermometry, and a variety of design and construction techniques. The lively and practical style make it easy to read and particularly useful to anyone beginning research in low-temperature physics. Low-temperature scientists will find it of great value due to its extensive compilation of materials data and relevant new results.

This book was released on 1973 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical investigations have been carried out in a broad area of low temperature and solid state physics which includes superconductivity, theory of quantum crystals, magnetism in metals, and liquid helium. The pair-field susceptibility of a superconductor has been determined both above and below T/sub c/. Anomalies in the heat capacity in the vicinity of T/sub c/ have been observed in thin superconducting films. The theory of quantum crystals has been applied to the problem of the ground state properties of nucleon matter. The results imply that most of the neutron matter in every neutron star is in the crystalline phase. Enhanced hyperfine nuclear cooling of PrCu/sub 6/ has been used successfully to achieve temperatures to at least 3 mK with slow warmup. Measurements on local moments in metals using nuclear orientation are being carried out at these temperatures. Preliminary results have been obtained in measurements of the differential osmotic pressure in the critical region of /sup 3/He//sup 4/He mixtures. Evidence has been found for surface film superfluidity in mixtures in regions of the phase diagram where the bulk liquid is normal. A new ac technique has been developed to study superfluid flow through fine channels in a manner analogous to the study of I-- V characteristics of superconducting weak links. (auth).

Book excerpt: Experimental investigations are being carried out in a broad area of low- temperature and solid-state physics which includes superconductivity, magnetism in metals and liquid and solid helium. The pair-field susceptibility of superconductors is being studied. A propagating mode in the phase of the superconducting order parameter has been found. Heat capacities of superconducting films in the vicinity of T/sub c/ are also being investigated. An investigation in the time-dependent high conductivity of dilute solid solutions of sodium in ammonia has been initiated. Nuclear orientation studies of the dilute magnetic impurity problem in metals in the 1 mK temperature region are being carried out. Refrigeration requirements for this work are being met using enhanced hyperfine nuclear cooling. Measurements of the differential osmotic pressure of $sup 3$He/$sup 4$He liquid mixtures near the tricritical point have shown a peak in the ''concentration susceptibility'' at the lambda line. Data obey a simple tricritical scaling relation. The dynamics of superfluid flow through submicron pores are being studied in both pure $sup 4$He and in $sup 3$He/$sup 4$He mixtures in an apparatus provided with a $sup 3$He refrigerator. The quantization of circulation in superfluid liquid $sup 4$He is being investigated using the Vinen method. The low temperature heat capacity of bcc solid $sup 3$He is being studied. (auth).

Download or read book Experimental Studies in Solid State and Low Temperature Physics. Final Report for 1966-1980 written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and theoretical investigations have been carried out in a broad area of low temperature and solid state physics which includes superconductivity, theory of quantum crystals (through 1973), magnetism in metals, and liquid helium. The work in superconductivity has involved investigations of the Josephson effect, studies of the pair-field susceptibility of superconductors and investigations of the thermodynamics of the superconducting phase transition. The competition between the metal-nonmetal transition and superconductivity has also been studied in random metal-rare gas systems. In the area of magnetism, magnetically ordered materials and dilute magnetic alloys have been investigated. Enhanced hyperfine nuclear magnetic ordering was discovered in PrCu6 at about 2.5 mK. The research on liquid 4He and 3He/4He mixtures has been directed at the quantum aspects of superfluid flow and rotation, the critical behavior near the lambda transition and the properties of the tricritical point. The theoretical program (through 1973) encompassed a broad spectrum of research on the properties of quantum liquids and solids with particular emphasis on crystalline 3He.

The ONR contributed to the support of this work by supplying helium gas which was used to make up losses in the helium recovery operation associated with the use of liquid helium by the workers named in the proposal.
