Book excerpt: Solar thermal energy generated by a salinity gradient solar pond (SGSP) is one of the most promising techniques for providing heat for desalination and other applications. A solar pond is a unique, free-energy-source system for collecting, converting and storing solar energy. Saudi Arabia is one of the most solar-radiation abundant countries on the planet, but the region also has limited water resources. Studying the thermal behaviour of a SGSP under Saudi Arabian conditions for heat generation for a thermal desalination application is the aim of this study. An empirical equation is developed and a Matlab script is programmed to calculate hourly-averaged daily solar radiation (from sunrise to sunset). The results are validated through NASA's 22-year-average data for solar radiation. Mathematical models are developed to describe and simulate the thermal behaviour of a SGSP. The results are compared with a SGSP in Kuwait; the results of the steady state model are sufficiently close to the measurements. The efficiency of a solar pond depends on the salt gradient stability in the middle non-convecting zone, and the diffusion and erosion of these salt layers are considered in this study. The proposed SGSP in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has an area of 100 x 100m2, and the predicted temperature of the storage zone is about 100De. Higher temperatures can be reached through improved insulation and covering the surface. Additionally, an SGSP in a cold climate is suggested to compare with and test our model. The University of Surrey SGSP exceeded 80De. This renewable and sustainable heat source can be employed in desalination; the energy cost of desalinated water constitutes over 50% of operating costs. The heat removal process from the solar pond is investigated, and coupling the proposed solar pond with a Multi-Effect Evaporator (MEE) is described; the effects of various factors on the SGSP-MEE coupling are studied.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several highly soluble salts were tested for their suitability as solar pond materials in a laboratory salinity gradient pond. Each of the salts tested has the potential to become a cheap, widely available resource, and could favorably impact the economics of salt-gradient solar ponds. Each salt's performance was compared with the performance of sodium chloride, the most common used salt in ponds. Predictions of stability were made and compared with experimentally derived stability as determined by the growth of convective layers. The investigators observed good agreement between experimental and theoretical ranking of the stability of each salt. However, it was apparent that more extensive information on the properties of candidate salt solutions was needed. Sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, magnesium chloride, and calcium chloride exhibited greater stability than sodium chloride at the same concentration gradient. Ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and potassium chloride showed less stability than sodium chloride at the same concentration gradient. The latter three salts are soluble enough to achieve the same stability as sodium chloride, but only if the concentration gradient is increased. Because of its low solubility, sodium bicarbonate was much less stable than sodium chloride and is probably unsuitable for an unsaturated salt-gradient pond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Truscott Brine Lake is being constructed to impound highly brackish water from a number of sources which would normally flow into the Wichita River, a tributary of the Red River in Knox County, Texas. A 35.4-km (22-mile) pipeline is being constructed to carry the brines from their primary source to the Truscott Brine Lake site. The reservoir is designed to contain 100 years of brine emissions from three chloride emission areas in the Wichita River Basin. The solar ponds and power generating facilities would be located in the Bluff Creek Arm of Truscott Brine Lake. The Truscott Brine Lake study includes: survey of suitability of Truscott Lake site, review of solar pond technology, preconceptual design of solar salt pond power plant, and economic evaluation.
