Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatment of the theory and practice of equilibrium finite element analysis in the context of solid and structural mechanics Equilibrium Finite Element Formulations is an up to date exposition on hybrid equilibrium finite elements, which are based on the direct approximation of the stress fields. The focus is on their derivation and on the advantages that strong forms of equilibrium can have, either when used independently or together with the more conventional displacement based elements. These elements solve two important problems of concern to computational structural mechanics: a rational basis for error estimation, which leads to bounds on quantities of interest that are vital for verification of the output and provision of outputs immediately useful to the engineer for structural design and assessment. Key features: Unique in its coverage of equilibrium – an essential reference work for those seeking solutions that are strongly equilibrated. The approach is not widely known, and should be of benefit to structural design and assessment. Thorough explanations of the formulations for: 2D and 3D continua, thick and thin bending of plates and potential problems; covering mainly linear aspects of behaviour, but also with some excursions into non-linearity. Highly relevant to the verification of numerical solutions, the basis for obtaining bounds of the errors is explained in detail. Simple illustrative examples are given, together with their physical interpretations. The most relevant issues regarding the computational implementation of this approach are presented. When strong equilibrium and finite elements are to be combined, the book is a must-have reference for postgraduate students, researchers in software development or numerical analysis, and industrial practitioners who want to keep up to date with progress in simulation tools.

Download or read book Finite Element Method written by Sinan Muftu and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite Element Method: Physics and Solution Methods aims to provide the reader a sound understanding of the physical systems and solution methods to enable effective use of the finite element method. This book focuses on one- and two-dimensional elasticity and heat transfer problems with detailed derivations of the governing equations. The connections between the classical variational techniques and the finite element method are carefully explained. Following the chapter addressing the classical variational methods, the finite element method is developed as a natural outcome of these methods where the governing partial differential equation is defined over a subsegment (element) of the solution domain. As well as being a guide to thorough and effective use of the finite element method, this book also functions as a reference on theory of elasticity, heat transfer, and mechanics of beams. Covers the detailed physics governing the physical systems and the computational methods that provide engineering solutions in one place, encouraging the reader to conduct fully informed finite element analysis Addresses the methodology for modeling heat transfer, elasticity, and structural mechanics problems Extensive worked examples are provided to help the reader to understand how to apply these methods in practice

Book Synopsis Mathematical Theory of Elastic Equilibrium by : Giuseppe Grioli
Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Elastic Equilibrium written by Giuseppe Grioli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not my intention to present a treatise of elasticity in the follow ing pages. The size of the volume would not permit it, and, on the other hand, there are already excellent treatises. Instead, my aim is to develop some subjects not considered in the best known treatises of elasticity but nevertheless basic, either from the physical or the analytical point of view, if one is to establish a complete theory of elasticity. The material presented here is taken from original papers, generally very recent, and concerning, often, open questions still being studied by mathematicians. Most of the problems are from the theory of finite deformations [non-linear theory], but a part of this book concerns the theory of small deformations [linear theory], partly for its interest in many practical questions and partly because the analytical study of the theory of finite strain may be based on the infinitesimal one.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early fifties, applied mathematicians, engineers and economists started to pay c10se attention to the optimization problems in which another (lower-Ievel) optimization problem arises as a side constraint. One of the motivating factors was the concept of the Stackelberg solution in game theory, together with its economic applications. Other problems have been encountered in the seventies in natural sciences and engineering. Many of them are of practical importance and have been extensively studied, mainly from the theoretical point of view. Later, applications to mechanics and network design have lead to an extension of the problem formulation: Constraints in form of variation al inequalities and complementarity problems were also admitted. The term "generalized bi level programming problems" was used at first but later, probably in Harker and Pang, 1988, a different terminology was introduced: Mathematical programs with equilibrium constraints, or simply, MPECs. In this book we adhere to MPEC terminology. A large number of papers deals with MPECs but, to our knowledge, there is only one monograph (Luo et al. , 1997). This monograph concentrates on optimality conditions and numerical methods. Our book is oriented similarly, but we focus on those MPECs which can be treated by the implicit programming approach: the equilibrium constraint locally defines a certain implicit function and allows to convert the problem into a mathematical program with a nonsmooth objective.

Book Synopsis Variational and Finite Element Methods by : Abraham I. Beltzer
Download or read book Variational and Finite Element Methods written by Abraham I. Beltzer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variational approach, including the direct methods and finite elements, is one of the main tools of engineering analysis. However, it is difficult to appreciate not only for seniors but for graduate students too. It is possible to make this subject easier to understand with the help of symbolic manipulation codes (SMC). The easiness with which these codes provide analytical results allow for a student or researcher to focus on the ideas rather than on calculational difficulties. The very process of programming with SMC encourages appreciation of the qualitative aspects of investigations. Saving time and effort, they enable undergraduates to deal with the subjects generally regarded as graduate courses. There is a habitual aspect too. These days it is more convenient for a student (researcher) to work with a keyboard than with a pencil. Moreover, semantic features of the codes may allow for generalizations of the standard techniques, which would be impossible to achieve without the computer's help.
Book Synopsis Mathematical Theory of Elastic Structures by : Kang Feng
Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Elastic Structures written by Kang Feng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elasticity theory is a classical discipline. The mathematical theory of elasticity in mechanics, especially the linearized theory, is quite mature, and is one of the foundations of several engineering sciences. In the last twenty years, there has been significant progress in several areas closely related to this classical field, this applies in particular to the following two areas. First, progress has been made in numerical methods, especially the development of the finite element method. The finite element method, which was independently created and developed in different ways by sci entists both in China and in the West, is a kind of systematic and modern numerical method for solving partial differential equations, especially el liptic equations. Experience has shown that the finite element method is efficient enough to solve problems in an extremely wide range of applica tions of elastic mechanics. In particular, the finite element method is very suitable for highly complicated problems. One of the authors (Feng) of this book had the good fortune to participate in the work of creating and establishing the theoretical basis of the finite element method. He thought in the early sixties that the method could be used to solve computational problems of solid mechanics by computers. Later practice justified and still continues to justify this point of view. The authors believe that it is now time to include the finite element method as an important part of the content of a textbook of modern elastic mechanics.
Book Synopsis Structural Dynamic Systems Computational Techniques and Optimization by : Cornelius T. Leondes
Download or read book Structural Dynamic Systems Computational Techniques and Optimization written by Cornelius T. Leondes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-01-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The finite element, an approximation method for solving differential equations of mathematical physics, is a highly effective technique in the analysis and design, or synthesis, of structural dynamic systems. Starting from the system differential equations and its boundary conditions, what is referred to as a weak form of the problem (elaborated in the text) is developed in a variational sense. This variational statement is used to define elemental properties that may be written as matrices and vectors as well as to identify primary and secondary boundaries and all possible boundary conditions. Specific equilibrium problems are also solved. This book clearly reveals the effectiveness and great significance of the finite element method available and the essential role it will play in the future as further development occurs.
Book Synopsis Equilibrium Problems: Nonsmooth Optimization and Variational Inequality Models by : F. Giannessi
Download or read book Equilibrium Problems: Nonsmooth Optimization and Variational Inequality Models written by F. Giannessi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to cover the three fundamental aspects of research in equilibrium problems: the statement problem and its formulation using mainly variational methods, its theoretical solution by means of classical and new variational tools, the calculus of solutions and applications in concrete cases. The book shows how many equilibrium problems follow a general law (the so-called user equilibrium condition). Such law allows us to express the problem in terms of variational inequalities. Variational inequalities provide a powerful methodology, by which existence and calculation of the solution can be obtained.
