Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I came to the United States as an international student in 2010 and graduated with a bachelor's in Accounting and Business. With the help of people and resources around me, I understood the essence of the professional experience, networking, good academics and communication skills early on during college and landed a job at a leading professional services firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) LLP, consistently ranked as the top accounting company globally. More importantly, this understanding of the various dimensions of college life allowed me to gain a holistic experience and build a foundation for a long-term personal, social and professional success. During college, I had many domestic and international students as mentors who assisted me along the way and answered questions on the various aspects of college life including: Which campus organizations to participate?  How to invest as an international student? What is an OPT, H-1b work-visa?  What is a credit score?  What skills can improve my chances to land an internship as an International student? However, there were numerous times when I examined countless forums, articles, and websites to get information on any one topic pertinent to foreign students. At these instances, I wished for a single source tailored towards international students that assembled info on the various aspects of college stretching from academics and personal finance to professional and social life. Most of us will agree that the lack of relevant information should be the last thing limiting any (international or domestic) student from reaching their full potential. Thus, my major objective for writing this book is to assure that international students are well informed about the different facets of college-life ranging from finding an internship, acknowledging the importance of networking, communication and writing skills to the significance of credit scores and the overall personal financial management. Moreover, this book also discusses the government policies relating to international students in the US, including the OPT extension and the H-1B work-visa process. Universities and colleges will inform students on such policies during orientation or through a website, but it is also useful to have the pertinent information readily available for any future reference. Furthermore, I have included a brief chapter to share some of my personal anecdotes of living in the American community and why America is among the best places for anyone seeking an overall educational journey. For some young adults, it is easy to be influenced by few cynical stories on the news about immigration and other related policies. So, in order to give a broader and a fairer perspective of an international student's experience in the American community, I have shared few personal narratives that directly touches the core values of the American society- diversity, generosity, and compassion- that many of you will experience firsthand. In conclusion, the book is structured into two sections: first, where I provide you my observation of America as an international student and the information on policies relating to college students on an F-1 student visa. Then, we will cover the different aspects of college life, where we will talk in detail about the social, academic, professional and personal finance outlooks as an international student. So, let's begin this journey!

Book excerpt: Each year, 700,000 students from around the world come to the United States and Canada to study. For many, the experience is as challenging as it is exciting. Far from home, they must adapt to a new culture, new university system, and in many cases, a new language. The process can be overwhelming, but as Charles Lipson’s Succeeding as an International Student in the United States and Canada assures us, it doesn’t have to be. Succeeding is designed to help students navigate the myriad issues they will encounter—from picking a program to landing a campus job. Based on Lipson’s work with international students as well as extensive interviews with faculty and advisers, Succeeding includes practical suggestions for learning English, participating in class, and meeting with instructors. In addition it explains the rules of academic honesty as they are understood in U.S. and Canadian universities. Life beyond the classroom is also covered, with handy sections on living on or off campus, obtaining a driver’s license, setting up a bank account, and more. The comprehensive glossary addresses both academic terms and phrases heard while shopping or visiting a doctor. There is even a chapter on the academic calendar and holidays in the United States and Canada. Coming to a new country to study should be an exciting venture, not a baffling ordeal. Now, with this trustworthy resource, international students have all the practical information they need to succeed, in and out of the classroom.

Book excerpt: Education abroad is an essential part of the university student experience. Initiatives such as IIE's Generation Study Abroad encourage more U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad. According to the Open Doors 2019 Report by the Institute for International Education (IIE), 341,751 students participated in post-secondary education abroad programs during the 2017/2018 academic year. This figure represents an increase of 2.7% of U.S. students studying abroad from the previous year. Research shows that education abroad provides students with opportunities not only to see the world but also to develop intercultural competence, which is increasingly crucial in the 21st century workplace. There are also numerous studies that show gains in autonomy, confidence, and tolerance for ambiguity in students who complete some type of study abroad experience. In sum, the education abroad experience in itself represents a powerful learning environment that continues to support personal and professional development long after returning home. Nonetheless, these learning environments must be cultivated along with faculty who develop and lead programs, as well as university partners and providers. Furthermore, education abroad programming and assessment is complex and must take into consideration many factors including academic goals, purposeful curricular development, and a balance between academics and leisure activities on site. This book explores the many aspects of education abroad as a learning environment, such as student learning outcomes, faculty development, and program assessment and evaluation. In addition, several chapters present education abroad experiences as a model for community engagement and activism. The authors represent a diverse range of institutions and perspectives and discuss programs around the globe. The book represents the voices of faculty that lead education abroad programs, students who participate in them, and also those of international students on a U.S. campus reflecting on their personal experiences abroad. Furthermore, this book contributes to the discussion of best practices to assist faculty and program directors in creating robust education abroad programs that meet the needs of their students and institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in middle-class India, Rajika Bhandari has seen generations of her family look westward, where an American education means status and success. But she resists the lure of America because those who left never return—they all become flies trapped in honey in a land of opportunity. As a young woman, however, she finds herself heading to a US university to study, following her heart and a relationship. When that relationship ends and she fails in her attempt to move back to India as a foreign-educated woman, she returns to the US and finds herself in a job where the personal is political and professional: she is immersed in the lives of international students who come to America from over 200 countries, the universities that attract them, and the tangled web of immigration that a student must navigate. An unflinching and insightful narrative that explores the global appeal of a Made in America education that is a bridge to America’s successful past and to its future, America Calling is both a deeply personal story of Bhandari’s search for her place and voice, and an incisive analysis of America’s relationship with the rest of the world through the most powerful tool of diplomacy: education. At a time of growing nationalism, a turning inward, and fear of the “other,” America Calling is ultimately a call to action to keep America’s borders—and minds—open.

Book excerpt: Results of a 1979-1980 survey of foreign students in the United States are presented. The survey, which accompanied the Annual Census of Foreign Students in the United States, studied country of origin, field of study, academic level, sex, and age of foreign students. Of the 2,651 institutions that reported foreign students, 1,961 or 74 percent provided the additional data, reporting on 160,840 individual students. The data indicate a pattern of growth in the foreign student population. The distribution and age/sex of these students, along with information on students from leading countries within each world region since 1949-1950, are detailed. Data on the field of study choices by foreign students and their academic levels indicate that engineering and engineering technologies were chosen by 25 percent of all students, compared to business and management (15.9 percent), social science (9.1 percent), or natural and life sciences (8.3 percent). Forty-five percent of the sample were enrolled in bachelor's degree programs, while 35.9 percent were in graduate programs, 13 percent in associate degree programs, and 6 percent in nondegree programs. The overall ratio of men to women among foreign students was 73.4 to 26.6 percent, and 40 percent of the sample were 22 years old or younger. Appended materials include a comparison of numbers of students found by the additional survey and the Annual Census, a list of responding institutions, field of study and country taxonomies, and a questionnaire.
