Book excerpt: "The likely direction of change in soil organic carbon (SOC) in the boreal forest biome, which harbors roughly 22% of the global soil carbon pool, is of marked concern because climate warming is projected to be greatest in high latitudes and temperature is the cardinal determinant of soil C mineralization. Moreover, the majority of boreal forest SOC is harbored in surficial organic horizons which are the most susceptible to consumption in wildfire. This research focuses on mechanisms of soil C accumulation in recently burned (2004) and unburned (~1850-1950) black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] BSP) forests along gradients in stand productivity and soil temperature. The primary research questions in these three chapters address: 1) how the interaction between stand production and temperature effect the stabilization of C throughout the soil profile, 2) the quantity and composition of water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) as it is leached from the soil across gradients in productivity and climate, and 3) physiographic controls on organic matter consumption in wildfire and the legacy of wildfire in stable C formation (pyrogenic C, or black carbon). Soil WSOC concentrations increased while SOC stocks decreased with increasing soil temperature and stand production along the gradients studied. Stocks of BC were miniscule in comparison to organic horizon SOC stocks, and therefore the C stabilizing effect of wildfire was small in comparison to SOC accumulation through arrested decomposition. We conclude that C stocks are likely to be more vulnerable to burning as soil C stocks decline relative to C sequestered in aboveground woody tissues in a warmer climate. These findings contribute to refining estimates of potential changes in boreal soil C stocks in the context of a changing climate"--Leaf iii.

Billings notes in his chapter in this book. the development of physiological ecology can be traced back to the very beginnings of the study of ecology it is clear that the modern development of this field in North America is due in the large part to the efforts of Billings alone. The foundation that Billings laid in the late 1950s came from his own studies on deserts and subsequently arctic and alpine plants, and also from his enormous success in instilling enthusiasm for the field in the numerous students attracted to the plant ecology program at Duke University. Billings' own studies provided the model for subsequent work in this field. Physiological techniques. normally confined to the laboratory. were brought into the field to examine processes under natural environmental conditions. These field studies were accompanied by experiments under controlled conditions where the relative impact of various factors could be assessed and further where genetic as opposed to environmental influences could be separated. This blending of field and laboratory approaches promoted the design of experiments which were of direct relevance to understanding the distribution and abundance of plants in nature. Physiological mechanisms were studied and assessed in the context of the functioning of plants under natural conditions rather than as an end in itself.

The Editors allowed the authors of the accepted papers great leeway in terms of thoroughness of their contributions. The quality of the papers included is high while some of them had to be rewritten in order to include valuable comments developed during the Symposium discussions. We have tried to include many papers from Eastern Europe since generally, because of the language problem, they do not get widely known. The Editors wish to express their thankfulness to UNESCO for sponsoring the Symposium in the frame of Man and Biosphere Program; to all scientists who have contributed papers in this volume; and to Mrs. A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focuses on the spatial and temporal patterns of, and controls on, CO2 in the Alaskan Arctic tundra ecosystem. The sites investigated--wet sedge, moist acidic, and low tussock tundra--represent the dominant land cover types in the Arctic tundra ecosystem, yet none have previously been investigated continuously throughout the year. In the first part of the research presented here, new definitions of season are presented, which will allow better comparisons across sites, seasons, and years in the Arctic tundra, where season length varies among years and locations. The results of this, the first, continuous, yearlong Arctic tundra study in a moist acidic tundra region, show that while summer uptake was detected ( -11 g C m−2 yr−1), the annual carbon signal was overwhelmed by the non-summer seasons, resulting in a net annual carbon release of nearly 38 g C m−2 yr−1. Winter showed low metabolic rates over a long season resulting in a net source of carbon to the atmosphere. The transitional seasons of spring and fall demonstrated active rates over short durations and were also sources of carbon to the atmosphere. In addition to the variable pattern of carbon exchange, the controls on carbon varied by season as well. For example, the effect of increasing soil temperature was negatively related to net ecosystem exchange (NEE) during winter and summer, but positively related to NEE during spring and fall. These results indicate that continuous monitoring of carbon, and related environmental variables, is important in accurate estimation of the current total annual and seasonal carbon budgets. This information, in turn, is critical to our ability to predict, with confidence, future carbon budgets. In the second part of the research, three years of continuous carbon measurements are presented for a low tussock tundra region. This southern site is especially vulnerable to climate change effects because it is at the southern extent of the tundra ecosystem near the graminoid-shrub boundary and increased rates of decomposition, and the region is likely to undergo community compositional changes in the near future. This region is likely to experience deeper active layers in the future, potentially exposing large stocks of carbon. This southern system was a net source of carbon over the three-year period of study, with only two of the three summer seasons acting as net carbon sinks. In one year, drought was so severe that even during the summer season, respiration overwhelmed photosynthesis, leading to a large (87 g C m−2 yr−1) annual efflux compared to the other years of the study (which had 0.04 and 49 g C m−2 yr−1 annual carbon release). In the last part of this research, NEE was measured at three sites located along a latitudinal gradient that spanned the North Slope of Alaska. Only in the northernmost site at Barrow was net annual carbon uptake detected, leading to an average uptake rate of 80 g C m−2 yr−1. Increased temperatures and decreased rainfall led to greater uptake in this, the coldest and least well drained of the sites. The two inland sites were both net sources of carbon to the atmosphere over the three-year period, resulting in an average of 30 and 45 g C m−2 yr−1 at each of the sites. Site differences were the primary controls on carbon variation among the sites, but inter and intra-annual variation were also significant. These data represent the first continuous measurements in the Arctic tundra ecosystem, and highlight the high degree of heterogeneity in the tundra ecosystem. These data may be used to validate and further develop climate and ecosystem models and to more accurately depict the variability, both spatially and temporally, in the Arctic tundra ecosystem.

This volume ably indicates the immense gaps in our knowledge in part through a compilation of current knowledge about how plants adapt to the environmental conditions of the various North American biomes. Single chapters consider Arctic, alpine, taiga, chaparral, grassland, deciduous forest, tropical and subtropical forest, marine beaches and dunes, and coastal marshes. Two chapters are devoted to Western forests and three to deserts. The short preface is a poor substitute for a thoughtful introduction and a summary is sorely missed. W.D. Billing's chapter on the history of plant ecophysiology is outstanding. The only remotely comparable single-volume work in English is Heinrich Walter's Vegetation of the Earth and Ecological Systems of the Geobiosphere (2nd ed., 1979; 1st ed., CH, Apr '74); the present volume fills in many details excluded in Walter's global treatment. A solid background in ecology and plant physiology is needed to comprehend at least half of each chapter; however, Chabot and Mooney provide an excellent reference work of use to advanced undergraduates, graduates, and faculty.
