Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Moisture and Crop Production Under Dry Land Conditions in Western Canada The subject matter of this bulletin deals in general with the open plains area of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, and especially southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern Alberta where climatic conditions are similar to those Of Swift Current. These conditions are low rainfall, low relative humidity, and high evaporation. The cultivated land in this area has been devoted chiefly to the growing of wheat, which, owing to these climatic factors, is generally of a high quality. The cultural practices followed on the prairies of Western Canada are similar to those of other prairie countries where the climate 1s similar Wheat 1s generally raised year after year without the inclusion of another crop or the regular application of fertilizer of any kind. At frequent intervals the land is summer-fallowed, that is, cultivated for one season but not see-, ded so that weeds can be controlled and moisture conserved for the following crop The first crop following such treatment is called a summer-fallow crop, while a crop on land that produced a crop the previous season is called a stubble. Crop; these terms will be used in this bulletin. The important difference between a summer fallow crop and a stubble crop is that the former usually has more moisture available for crop production. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crop Rotations and Soil Management for Eastern Canada The amount of manure which will be available on a farm will depend upon the number of stock which is kept, the amount of feed given and litter used, the number of months the animals are fed in the stable, and upon the care which is taken in the handling of the manure. Even when all the crops grown on the farm are fed to the stock and the animals are stabled for seven months of the year, it is doubtful whether under average conditions an application of manure could be given larger than that equivalent to 25 tons per acre per year or, on a four-year rotation, to one application of 10 tons of manure per acre. This quantity might be obtained when he yield of corn was 10 tons per acre, hay 2 tons per acre, and oats 50 bushe s per acre; if larger crop yields were secured, greater quantities of manure would be available. When fed in the stable, each cow produces approximately one ton of manure per month; the' amount which will be available for distribution to the land will depend upon the care and method which is employed in handling the manure. Animals utilize themselves over one-half of the organic matter in the food, about one-quarter of the nitrogen and phosphorus, and about one-eighth of the potassium. Unless care is taken in the handling of the manure, considerable additional losses of fertility will take place by fermentation, by leaching, and by failure to conserve the liquid portion of the manure. Increasing human populations have resulted in greater demands on semi-arid zones for providing human susten ance and the possibility that this may enhance desertification is a grave concern. These zones are harsh habitats for humans. The famines that resulted from drought during the late 1960's and the 1970's in the African Sahel illustrated the unreliability of present agricultural systems in this zone. Large fluctuations in ag ricultural production have occurred in semi-arid zones of Australia, North Ameri ca, and the Soviet Union due to periodic droughts, even though considerable ag ricultural technology has been devoted to agricultural development in these zones. The challenge to mankind is to manage these different semi-arid zones so that pro ductivity is increased and stabilized, and environmental deterioration is decreased. Irrigation can be used to increase and stabilize agricultural production in semi-arid zones as discussed in Volume 5 of this series, Arid Zone Irrigation. The present volume, Agriculture in Semi-Arid Environments, focuses on dryland farming in semi-arid zones, and is relevant to the large areas of the world where rainfall is limiting and where water is not available for irrigation. This volume is designed to assist agricultural development in these areas and consists of reviews and analyses of available information by scientists working in Africa, Australia, and at the U ni versity of California.
