Book excerpt: Senator is back with the third in his trilogy of seaside poetry. Soft Landings Finale frames a panorama of the natural world that is both sweeping and yet intensely personal in scope. Senators deft pen draws creatures from their nesting places and follows them into their magnificent surroundings. We dive with cormorants and flit with minnows. We feel what it is like to be a duck bobbing in the marsh or a seal watching a ship. And yet this third volume is a departure from the first two Soft Landings books. Although still spending time among the gulls, waves, and clouds, here Senator takes a look inward, to the changing tides and sunny reflections of his own psyche, of growing older and sometimes wiser, sometimes not. Senators eye misses nothing and stares unblinking at the twilight of our days while still finding humor in everything he encounters, and comfort in loves old and new. These poems are to be savored in rich droplets on your tongue, and kept close to your heart.

Book excerpt: This lovely book takes a reader to the most familiar and comforting of places -- seashore, countryside, bike path -- but each time there is something new. We stand on the beach and notice the mysterious patterns of birds overhead, the casual but poignant spread of beach toys, tangled seaweed, and we see them differently. Senator paints for us the moments of life that repeat endlessly but that we experience uniquely each time, whether in the simple bliss found in a respite from cold weather, or the complexity and mystery of a friend's mind, or even momentous self-discovery reached during an argument. In this book we find moments of humble reflection on relationships, the hope and wistfulness and even despair that give us the rhythms and colors of our days -- a collection that is profound and simple all at once.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of our time is spent with the outer life -- our jobs, our friends and families, our hobbies, or our health. We spend much less time with the inner life, that place of feelings and thoughts, anger and love, hopes and dreams. When we do spend time with the inner life, it can often be overwhelming and disruptive, taking over our lives with feelings of hopelessness and fear or with endless ruminations about our past and worries about our future. In the practices of this book, we learn how to make friends with our inner life, to reconnect with ourselves, others, our world, and with God. We learn to have productive conversations with three specific inner voices: our separated self who lives in a world of scarcity and fear, our connected self who lives in an expansive world of abundance and compassion, and the watcher who stands apart from all the conflicting conversations going on in the inner life. The watcher decides how then shall we live. With a little time and some practice, we can bring our inner turmoil to a peaceful resolution and live a life that is safe, joyful, focused, and filled with compassion.

Book excerpt: Soft Landing: Airline Industry Strategy, Service, and Safety covers the immediate past, present, and future of the airline industry and its effects on consumers and the economy. Aviation receives a disproportionate amount of news coverage in the popular press—not to mention chatter at cocktail parties and workplaces around the world. And why not? Aviation represents a sector of the U.S economy, for example, exceeded in size only by the real estate, healthcare, and automotive industries. Furthermore, hundreds of millions of people fly each year, including 80 million Americans. So we all have airline stories—experiencing a delay and losing a business deal, spending a night or three in the airport, dealing with ornery airline personnel, losing money on airline stocks, or being involved in a near miss. (Or, as George Carlin more accurately put it, a “near hit.”) But things might be on the upswing. Knocked to its knees by 9/11 and a decade of falling revenue and rising losses, the industry’s “flying cheap” strategy and organizational efficiencies based partly on outsourcing have appear to have helped passengers and profitability return. As this book explains, we can look forward to better technology and infrastructure, speedier—and easier—travel, more effective and less invasive security measures, and more jobs in the air and on the ground. Turbulence is always a possibility. Rising fuel costs, economic uncertainty, and future terror attacks could cause tumult once again. Plus, airline companies intend to charge us extra for everything from the weight of our own bodies to use of the bathroom. But as the industry has discovered, we’ll put up with that—and more—if we can make it to our destinations with bags intact and a smaller dent in our wallets. Soft Landing will: Sort out the promise and perils facing the airlines Analyze and articulate the potential impact of changes in the aviation industry on passengers, airports, governments, the global economy, and the airlines themselves Give airline passengers worldwide an idea of what’s ahead when it comes to airline service, security, and technology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical study was conducted to develop a procedure for determining the deceleration characteristics of vehicles landing on gas-filled bags of various arbitrary shapes. The analysis developed is applicable for landing on planetary or lunar surfaces for sinking speeds that are small compared to the sonic velocity of the gas contained within the bag. For relatively high velocities a light gas such as hydrogen or helium should probably be used. A series of calculations was made for four bag shapes for impact on the earth at seal-level conditions for sinking speeds consistent with descent by parachute to determine how deceleration characteristics were influenced by various factors entering the equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whilst sustainability is already an important driver in the new building sector, this book explores how those involved in refurbishment of commercial building are moving this agenda forward. It includes chapters by developers, surveyors, cost consultants, architects, building physicists and other players, on the role they each can play in enabling refurbishment to be commercially, environmentally and socially sustainable. Case studies from northern climates show real examples of different building types, ages and uses and will demonstrate what action has been taken to create more sustainable buildings. The chapters raise and discuss all the relevant issues that need to be considered in retrofitting decision making. Changing standards, planning, process management, financing, technical issues, site organisation, commissioning and subsequent building management are all considered. The book demonstrates that buildings can be made comfortable to occupy, easy to manage and low in energy demand and environmental impact.
