Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of first-generation college students of color in a predominantly White institution (PWI) who successfully completed the first two years of college. This qualitative research utilized semi-structured interviews to understand the perceptions of first-generation college students of color and how they viewed their secondary and post-secondary experiences. The conceptual framework was supported through the literature by analyzing the intersectionality of historical factors, socioeconomic status, critical race theory, and educational programs. Although these students of color faced the anxieties, confusion, and difficulties that all college students encounter when they transition to college, their challenges are heightened when coupled with other factors such as lower levels of college readiness, living in high crime communities, a lack of financial resources, a lack of family support, and limited knowledge pertaining to postsecondary education (Brown, 2008; Pascarella, et al. 2003; Strayhorn, 2006). Such factors create unique challenges for first-generation students of color, resulting in disparate academic achievement (Strayhorn). Participants in this study were selected using a criterion-based selection process. This study aimed to give voice to 12 students who self-identified as first-generation students of color, were classified as juniors attending the University of North Florida, and who were a part of the Jacksonville Commitment program. The Jacksonville Commitment program was selected for further study because the program provided students with wrap-around services that supported first-generation students' persistence and social and academic development. Eisner's (1998) educational criticism was the primary data analysis approach used in this study, supported by Hatch's (2002) typological and interpretive analysis. Typological analysis divided the overall data set into categories or typologies. The four typologies identified in this study were: family relationships, socioeconomic status, resilience, and college retention and persistence. Interpretive analysis was used to extrapolate meaning and attach significance to the data. Thematics was used it identify recurring messages within the data (Eisner, 1998; Patton, 2002). Data analysis of the present study led to the development of three themes: (a) Students perceived that they persisted in college as a result of being exposed to a rigorous K-12 curriculum; (b) Students perceived that they persisted in college due to their support network; (c) Previous academic experiences contributed to the development of student self-efficacy. Students in this study challenged the deficit model which suggests that students without resources will not achieve. Instead, they were more aligned with the asset model that connects student success with the positive attributes that they possessed. The major implication from this study is that first-generation students of color have a greater chance of academic success if provided focused supports and academic preparation in primary and secondary schools to prepare them for the collegiate culture.

The theories used are the control-value theory, sociocultural learning theory, and critical race theory, as it focuses on the impact student's achievement emotions have on their academic performance. The phenomenology research design described how students feel their low-SES status impacts their standardized college readiness scores. A sample pool of an urban first-year college class were used with an average of 120 students, while the sample size for this study was 12 students. The type of sampling used to decrease this sampling pool to 12 participants was the purposive judgment sampling procedure. Urban University (pseudonym) in Atlanta, Georgia, was the setting for this study due to its high number of low-SES students in attendance. In addition, this institution was a public university. It has a president as the institution's leader, deans as the leaders of each college, and professors leading specific subjects in each classroom. For the research data sources, I used document analysis, interviews, and focus groups in this study to collect data from students. The Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used when completing the data analysis to provide insight into how the participants make sense of the given phenomenon.

Additionally, perceptions of participants regarding existing variables affecting student college and career readiness were examined. As education and employment gaps prevail, equitable opportunities for all students continue to be at the forefront of research efforts. This study ascertained the perspectives of 24 elementary-level educators and 44 secondary-level educators in one southeastern Pennsylvania school district who were teachers, counselors, and administrators. Additionally, 23 business employees who volunteered through the Johnson & Johnson Bridge to Employment school-business partnership program offered their perspectives. Eighty-nine of the participants voluntarily responded to an online Likert-scale questionnaire, and 84 of them responded to open-ended questions. Individual interviews, conducted by a research assistant, were completed by 11 of the participants. Analysis of the data confirmed the findings of existing research that suggested school-business partnership programs provide opportunities and contribute positively to students' college and career readiness. School counselors were perceived to be the best equipped to assume the role of guiding students, and the ideal set-up includes a mentoring, team-like approuch. Finally, families' low socioeconomic status was perceived to be a variable determining whether students possessed 21st century skills, suggesting that schools, including business partnerships, provide opportunities that enable students to be college and career ready.

Psychosocial skills are defined as: intrinsic motivation, non-cognitive skills, and resiliency. The structural framework, modified from that of Conley (2008), identifies major contributing factors in student readiness for college. In addition, the belief that these factors are most effective when they work together (Epstein, 2011), and rooted in the foundation of behavioral psychology, and the belief that psychosocial skills can be developed. This phenomenological, mixed methods, study examined the impact that parents and the school have on the perceptions of student psychosocial readiness for college and found that consciousness raising, practice, and the development of internal meaning for the importance of psychosocial skill development is critical to the successful transition into a four-year university. The study was able to identify processes currently in place that impact psychosocial readiness for college, providing an opportunity to identify potential changes in practice. Improving parent communication regarding the importance of developing psychosocial skills in their students, and best practices, including more intentional programming where students are expected to interact with varying communities, to practice to develop some of the expressed psychosocial skills, arming students with tools that could better prepare students for the transition into college.

The purpose of this study was to understand high school success factors from the perspective of successful college students from low and moderate socioeconomic backgrounds. The InQuiry process was used to assess student perspectives. InQuiry is a research technique that combines a sorting activity to collect quantitative data and follow-up focus group interviews to gather qualitative data. Four distinct student perspectives emerged from the data collected in this study. They were designated: (1) Self Determination High School, (2) Utopia High School, (3) On My Own High School, and (4) Great Expectations High School. The findings indicated that beyond important internal factors there are a number of easy to implement external strategies that may have an immediate impact on this issue.

Book excerpt: Completion of a baccalaureate degree is positively associated with economic independence and upward mobility in an increasingly competitive world. Student success, through persistence to graduation, is a central goal for institutions of higher education, but only a fraction of students who begin college will graduate with a degree. Despite decades of exploration, student retention hovers at a consistent percentage, leaving the goal of degree completion unattained for many college students. Research shows college retention and degree completion vary across different sociodemographic characteristics such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and first-generation status. Research also indicates student engagement in educationally purposeful activity, both inside and outside of the classroom, increases the likelihood of student success across sociodemographic lines. Foundational theory as well as historic and contemporary research provides promising direction for higher education faculty, staff, and administrators to create institution specific plans to increase the chances of student success by increasing student retention in college through improved student engagement (Kinzie & Kuh, 2004). The present study seeks to explore the relationship between college student engagement, socioeconomic status, and persistence. National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) data is used to measure student engagement behaviors among first year college students at a small public residential university in the upper-Midwest. Parent income is used to define socioeconomic status and is matched with student engagement scores defined by the NSSE. Institutional data is used to determine the persistence behaviors of the students participating in this study. Results indicate a small positive relationship between student engagement and persistence suggesting high levels of student engagement increases the likelihood of persistence. No relationship is found between parent income and persistence or parent income and student engagement, suggesting parent income alone may not sufficiently explain socioeconomic differences in student engagement and persistence. Exploring these relationships assist faculty, staff, and administrators develop specific interventions to increase student engagement in experiences shown to improve the likelihood of persistence to degree completion.

Book excerpt: This dissertation's two primary purposes were to construct an alternative socioeconomic status model and estimate how it predicts student success in higher education. This research filled a gap in knowledge about the widely acknowledged disparities in higher education based on socioeconomic status. Prior research has often relied on parental education (i.e., first-generation status) or parental income to understand differences in student success. My research demonstrated that an alternative model using survey data is robust and provides an accurate representation of students' socioeconomic statuses. This dissertation relied on an item-set administered by the National Survey of Student Engagement in Spring 2020, which focused on socioeconomic status and cultural capital. The sample included over 10,000 first-year and senior students from 30 bachelor's degree-granting institutions in the United States. The structural equation modeling results proved that socioeconomic disparities in higher education remain prevalent and revealed some important nuances for consideration. First and foremost, there was strong empirical evidence to support the use of an alternative socioeconomic status model that included self-reported measures of economic capital, social capital, and cultural capital. Alternative socioeconomic status was also a statistically significant predictor of student engagement in higher education. In other words, students with higher alternative socioeconomic statuses reported higher engagement indicator scores and more participation in high-impact practices. Based on the findings of this study, I offered several implications for stakeholders across higher education. In particular, the confirmatory results of the first research question related to the alternative socioeconomic status model offer a useful tool for future higher education and survey research. The findings of the second research question, related to the magnitude of the socioeconomic disparities in student success, are especially relevant for institutional leaders, college ranking publications, accreditation bodies, and the U.S. Department of Education. For each of these stakeholders, I provided a detailed overview of how the information in this dissertation could inform meaningful action to address socioeconomic disparities related to student success in higher education.

Book excerpt: The millennial generation (individuals born between 1980 and 2000) began attending institutions of higher learning around 2000, and a number of authors have proposed how they will impact the university systems and how universities should respond. Several authors have suggested that students and their parents are scrutinizing universities more in an attempt to make sure their needs and/or desires are being met. Some are suggesting that universities need to place greater emphasis on meeting the demands of the consumers they already have and those they wish to attract. While this thought may be controversial to some, universities are spending a great deal on money on recruitment, and competition has increased. Howe and Strauss (2000 & 2003) propose that millennial generation students are different than their predecessors, and success in interaction with these students involves acknowledging and responding to seven characteristics they attribute to this population. The characteristics are special, sheltered, confident, team-oriented, conventional, pressured, and achieving. While general support for these characteristics exists, the opinions of college students as they relate to these characteristics do not exist. Additionally, the characteristics have been applied to the generation homogenously, and allowances for differences by groups have not been applied. This study assessed whether there were differences by ethnicity, socioeconomic status, family history of education, and geographical area of primary and secondary education. Undergraduate students enrolled in general education classes at Texas Tech University (n = 1,232) completed a voluntary survey that assessed their attitudes toward the seven characteristics assigned to them.
