Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since India's independence, socio-economic development and the protection of scheduled castes (SCs) from discrimination and exploitation has been a high priority area for the country. The SCs have been socially ostracized, economically exploited, and denied human dignity and a sense of self-worth. According to the 2011 Census, SCs constituted 16.9% of the Indian population. And, sadly, women belonging to SCs are in a far worse situation by all development indicators. Poverty and deprivation affect them more adversely. And yet, despite of their adverse conditions, they contribute significantly to the sustenance and growth of the production system of the country. The development and empowerment of SCs is a commitment enshrined in India's constitution. This is to be done by ensuring equal rights, access to benefits and resources, and empowerment to enable SCs to develop their potential and capacity as agents of social change, through the process of planned development. Planning in recent years has seen a visible shift in focus from the mere expansion of the production of goods and services - and the consequent growth of per capita income - to planning for the enhancement of human well-being. This book examines the problems and constraints of the SCs population. The various measures adopted to ameliorate their socio-economic conditions are also discussed. Book excerpt: Upliftment of the scheduled castes is not merely a matter of compassion or charity as is commonly assumed but a developmental necessity. Centuries of exploitation and neglect have forced the majority of these hapless people into sub-human existence. They occupy the bottom rung of the social lader. Devoid of education, information and the necessary motivation, information and the necessary motivation, they are not in a postion to take advantage of teh reservation policy and other programmes evolved to improve their situation. Are the need and relevance of development of these exterior castes duly appreciated? Have development programmes of rthe betterment of the dperessed classes been able to achieve their objective? Is there the necessary social, political and administrative will to evolve social, intervention strategies and implement them in letter and spirit? The present work addresses itself to these questions and strives to identify those factors which facilitate or hinder development and change in these weaker sections of society. It examines the socio-cultural background, economic situation, social interactional patterns, development programmes, the magnitude of participation in these development of participation in these development programmes and programme preference of the members of the scheduled castes.

The Caste System Alienated A Larger Part Of Our Society From The Mainstream. The Division Of Society According To Privileges Enjoyed By The People Paints Carefully The Picture Of Social Exploitation Of A Community By Another Community. The Present Edited Book Is An Attempt To Describe Different Development Aspects Of Scheduled Caste. Different Aspects Such As Discrimination And Inequality, Well-Being Of Rural Women, Income Inequality, Contribution Of Some Social Reformers In The Nation-Making, Development And Empowerment, Disadvantaged Migrants, Primary Education, Constitutional Safeguards, Literacy, Political Reservation And The Role Of Scheduled Caste Women In Decision-Making Have Well Been Documented By Social Scientists. This Is A Timely Publication In The Sense That It Has Presented Some Thought-Provoking Papers Relevant For Understanding The Issue Of Reservation Especially For The Most Disadvantaged In The Community. It Cannot Be Denied That In A Country Like Ours Some Form Of Affirmative Action Is Unavoidable To Eradicate Various Forms Of Social, Cultural And Economic Backwardness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Society Is Highly Stratified With Many Glaring Inequalities Among The Different Social Groups. The Caste System Has Segregated The Dalits And Other Weaker Sections From The Rest Of The Society To An Extent That They Were Denied Even The Basic Human Rights. Interestingly, The Absence Of Freedom Of Occupation, Low Earnings, Implicit Restriction On Needs And Stigma On Menial Labour Destroyed The Economy Of Lower Castes Particularly Scheduled Castes. As A Result, Scheduled Castes Remained Socially Outcastes, Economically Dependent, Politically Powerless And Culturally Backward. The Affirmative Action Adopted By The Central And State Governments Has Insured The Demolition Of Inequality Through Providing Reservation In Education And Employment As Well As Implementation Of Special Component Plan For Their Development. Against This Backdrop, Present Book Highlights The Socio-Economic Status Of Scheduled Castes, Funding Of Special Component Plan And Participation Of Scheduled Castes Beneficiaries In The Projects Of Minor Irrigation, Land Based Activities, Village And Cottage Industry And Service Sector. It Is Hoped That The Book Will Provide Useful Insights To The Policy Makers, Planners, Academicians And Scholars As Well As Who Are Interested In This Field

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Socio-economic conditions of Dalit agricultural workers and their participation and contribution for economic development. After 1980's mant changes have taken place in the indian economy. As a result economic growth rate increased. Despite high economic growth and agricultural performance, the population of the scheduled castes and tribes could not get the fruits of high economic growth and benefits of globalisation. In th process of globalisation the rich are becoming richer and poor becoming poorer. The poverty rations have been significantly higher than for the rest of the population and the proportion of the poor in the country belonging to the SCs and STs increased. This book will see as to why the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes could not utilize the opportunity vis-a vis the non-scheduled castes and are remaining as agricultural labourers and other traditional occupants living below poverty line. Hence migration, unemployment, dropout rate in the schools, poverty and social exclusion are taken momentum among Dalits. This book will analyse the pattern of occupational distribution of dalits, access to land, agricultural workers, poverty and rural development programes and dalits participation. This book concludes that dalits should be included in the process of economic planning and policy implementation. Moreover the dalits should take active participation in the developmental activities. Inclusive economic growth may give good hope for dalits.
