Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1965 more immigrants have come to Los Angeles than anywhere else in the United States. These newcomers have rapidly and profoundly transformed the city's ethnic makeup and sparked heated debate over their impact on the region's troubled economy. Ethnic Los Angeles presents a multi-investigator study of L.A.'s immigrant population, exploring the scope, characteristics, and consequences of ethnic transition in the nation's second most populous urban center. Using the wealth of information contained in the U.S. censuses of 1970, 1980, and 1990, essays on each of L.A.'s major ethnic groups tell who the immigrants are, where they come from, the skills they bring and their sources of employment, and the nature of their families and social networks. The contributors explain the history of legislation and economic change that made the city a magnet for immigration, and compare the progress of new immigrants to those of previous eras. Recent immigrants to Los Angeles follow no uniform course of adaptation, nor do they simply assimilate into the mainstream society. Instead, they have entered into distinct niches at both the high and low ends of the economic spectrum. While Asians and Middle Easterners have thrived within the medical and technical professions, low-skill newcomers from Central America provide cheap labor in light manufacturing industries. As Ethnic Los Angeles makes clear, the city's future will depend both on how well its economy accommodates its diverse population, and on how that population adapts to economic changes. The more prosperous immigrants arrived already possessed of advanced educations and skills, but what does the future hold for less-skilled newcomers? Will their children be able to advance socially and economically, as the children of previous immigrants once did? The contributors examine the effect of racial discrimination, both in favoring low-skilled immigrant job seekers over African Americans, and in preventing the more successful immigrants and native-born ethnic groups from achieving full economic parity with whites. Ethnic Los Angeles is an illuminating portrait of a city whose unprecedented changes are sure to be replicated in other urban areas as new concentrations of immigrants develop. Backed by detailed demographic information and insightful analyses, this volume engages all of the issues that are central to today's debates about immigration, ethnicity, and economic opportunity in a post-industrial urban society.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document examines differences in socioeconomic status by racial and ethnic groups in California, exploring changing patterns over time. It analyzes trends and outcomes in demography, geographic distribution, health, education, crime, labor markets, economic status, and political participation. Data on educational outcomes include: education of mothers; English language ability; preschool activities of children ages 3 and 4; reading and math proficiency for grade 4 and 8 public school students; high school completion rates; college completion rates; and measures of basic skills in the adult population. The educational outcomes of Hispanics and African Americans are the lowest among all racial and ethnic groups. Most recent population growth has occurred among Hispanics and Asians. Most counties were predominantly White in 1970, but between 1970-98, the share of Whites declined in all but one county. African Americans have the worst health status of any group. Hispanics often have less access to health care and lower health status than Whites. Health indicators for Asians are similar to those for Whites. Nonwhites generally have lower earnings than whites. Hispanics and African Americans have particularly high unemployment rates. Asian and White family incomes are substantially higher than those for African Americans and Hispanics. The ethnic distribution of those arrested and incarcerated has shifted dramatically. The proportion of Hispanics incarcerated has risen at a faster rate than has the Hispanic proportion of the general population. African Americans experience the highest risk of arrest and incarceration and are most likely to experience violence. Whites are over-represented in the voting population. Asians and Hispanics have the lowest participation rates. An appendix presents additional sources of information. (Contains 103 bibliographic references.) (SM)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Until recently, most research on Latina/os in the U.S. has ignored historical and contemporary dynamics in Latin America, just as scholars of Latin America have generally stopped their studies at the border. This volume roots Los Angeles in the larger arena of globalization, exploring the demographic changes that have transformed the Latino presence in LA from primarily Mexican-origin to one that now includes peoples from throughout the hemisphere. Bringing together scholars from a range of disciplines, it combines historical perspectives with analyses of power and inequality to consider how Latina/os are responding to exclusionary immigration, labor, and schooling practices and actively creating communities. Book Synopsis Hispanics and the Future of America by : National Research Council
Download or read book Hispanics and the Future of America written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hispanics and the Future of America presents details of the complex story of a population that varies in many dimensions, including national origin, immigration status, and generation. The papers in this volume draw on a wide variety of data sources to describe the contours of this population, from the perspectives of history, demography, geography, education, family, employment, economic well-being, health, and political engagement. They provide a rich source of information for researchers, policy makers, and others who want to better understand the fast-growing and diverse population that we call "Hispanic." The current period is a critical one for getting a better understanding of how Hispanics are being shaped by the U.S. experience. This will, in turn, affect the United States and the contours of the Hispanic future remain uncertain. The uncertainties include such issues as whether Hispanics, especially immigrants, improve their educational attainment and fluency in English and thereby improve their economic position; whether growing numbers of foreign-born Hispanics become citizens and achieve empowerment at the ballot box and through elected office; whether impending health problems are successfully averted; and whether Hispanics' geographic dispersal accelerates their spatial and social integration. The papers in this volume provide invaluable information to explore these issues.
Book Synopsis Afro-Latinx Community in Los Angeles County by : Zihui Lei
Download or read book Afro-Latinx Community in Los Angeles County written by Zihui Lei and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Afro-Latinx identity, encompassing those who are African-descendants with Latino ethnic backgrounds, has been existing since the 1700s and acknowledged since the 1900s but has only gained attention after the 2000s. Only a few articles, published by sociologists, anthropologists, and geneticists, have examined the Afro-Latinx identity and the social challenges that Afro-Latinxs face. Among this small subset of research, there have been no geographic analytic studies particularly related to Afro-Latinx demography or Afro-Latinx communities. This research explores Afro-Latinx identity and analyzes Afro-Latinx socioeconomic statuses and living conditions in Los Angeles County. Using the 2019 demographic data in Los Angeles County, this research describes the spatial distribution of the Afro-Latinx population and maps Palenques. Palenques were originally defined as "communities with only runaway enslaved Africans" in Latin American countries and is now defined as Afro-Latinx communities by this research. Palenques are mostly located in areas centered around downtown Los Angeles. This research additionally measures life quality in Los Angeles County with factor analyses and a cumulative impact model using the 2019 socioeconomic data, the CalEnviroScreen 4.0 data, and the Healthy Places Index data. Palenques life quality was then analyzed through a descriptive analysis, correlation models, and spatial autocorrelation models. The descriptive analysis results showed that Palenques generally have a lower financial status, a higher isolation rate, and higher levels of environmental pollutions than the average. The correlation models suggested that the Hispanic or Latino of any race population has a strongest positive correlation to disadvantaged life quality, while the Black population has an extremely weak correlation to vulnerability. In addition, the spatial autocorrelation models revealed a strong spatial clustering of highly disadvantaged communities near downtown Los Angeles, which are also Hispanic or Latino of any race and Black race have high population densities in Los Angeles County. This research lastly found that, surprisingly, an Afro-Latinx has a higher possibility to live in an advantaged community than a disadvantaged community. This finding is notable because they go against the arguments in many existing studies about social inequality and environmental injustice toward the Black population and multiracial population.
