Book Synopsis Mental Health and Palestinian Citizens in Israel by : Muhammad M Haj-Yahia
Download or read book Mental Health and Palestinian Citizens in Israel written by Muhammad M Haj-Yahia and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minorities face particular social strains, and these are often manifested in their overall mental health. In Israel, just under a quarter of the citizens are Arab Palestinians, yet very little has been published exploring the spectrum of mental health issues prevalent in this population. The work collected here draws on the first-hand experience of experts working with Israeli Palestinians to highlight the problems faced by service users, their families, and their communities. Palestinians in Israel face unique social, gender, and family-related conditions that also need reliable research and assessment. Mental Health and Palestinian Citizens in Israel offers research and observation on three central topics: socio-cultural determinants of mental health, mental health needs, and mental health service utilization. From suicidal behaviors and addiction to generational trauma and the particular concerns of children and the elderly, this broad and careful collection of research opens new dialogues on treatment, prevention, and methods for providing the best possible care to those in need.
Book Synopsis Social Work in the Middle East by : Hussein Hassan Soliman
Download or read book Social Work in the Middle East written by Hussein Hassan Soliman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Countries across the Middle East face a number of social problems such as poverty, unemployment, housing, internal immigration and caring for vulnerable groups such as children, women, the disabled and the elderly. Providing an overview of the wide range of social issues addressed by social work practitioners, this book reveals the impact of the region’s distinct historical and cultural factors, traditions, and customs and applications on social welfare and social work practice. Examining social work education and practice across a number of countries including Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Oman and Sudan this book examines and assesses the diverse nature of social work in these countries and the role of the profession in providing essential services to different client groups. This in turn illustrates how social work as a profession contributes to the welfare system in the Middle East, and the relationship and interaction between social work professionals and governments. Further, the contributors demonstrate the religious, historical, ideological, cultural and geographical factors that influence social work practice and delivery in the region, with particular attention paid to the role of Islam in guiding and shaping social welfare institutions and the practice of social services. Bringing together the work of scholars from across the Middle East, this book will be welcomed by students, scholars and practitioners interested in the sociology, politics and culture of the Middle East, international social work and social welfare.

Book Synopsis On Social Closure by : JURGEN. MACKERT
Download or read book On Social Closure written by JURGEN. MACKERT and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-11 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his book On Social Closure, Jürgen Mackert seeks to reinvigorate the idea of social closure and bring it back as a basic sociological concept for understanding the strategies and processes powerful groups use to improve their life chances at the expense of the less powerful. To do this, he puts forward a mechanism-based explanatory approach that makes it possible to empirically study social closure through exclusion in the context of neoliberalism; exploitation within global capitalism; and elimination in the ongoing legacy of settler colonialism. Further, he identifies two critical social mechanisms to explain how human beings are denied access to resources, rights, or critical networks and to bring power dynamics into closure analysis.

Book Synopsis The Rule is for None but Allah by : Joana Cook
Download or read book The Rule is for None but Allah written by Joana Cook and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last four decades have been shaped by the rise of Islamist politics across significant swathes of the globe. Whether by gun or by ballot box, various Islamist movements-from as far and wide as the Malian desert and Indonesia's archipelagos-have sought to obtain power and govern territories, in a bid to revive an Islamic ancient regime. With the regional privations produced by the 'War on Terror' and the political unrest following 2011's Arab uprisings, the global march of Islamism has only accelerated in the twenty-first century. Building on an established literature on rebel governance, The Rule is for None but Allah examines fifteen cases from around the world to consider the different ways Islamists have approached and implemented governance; the challenges they have faced; and how they have responded to obstacles. It brings new detail and insights on a wide range of themes, including legitimacy, constitutionality and social-welfare activism. From the rise and fall of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood, to Islamic State's attempts to create its own currency, to the dramatic return of the Taliban in Afghanistan, this edited volume from two leading scholars of contemporary terrorism assembles an enviable array of international experts to explore these pressing issues.
Book Synopsis Globalizations and Social Movements by : John Guidry
Download or read book Globalizations and Social Movements written by John Guidry and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization is a set of processes that are weakening national boundaries. Both transnational and local social movements develop to resist the processes of globalization--migration, economic interdependence, global media coverage of events and issues, and intergovernmental relations. Globalization not only spurs the creation of social movements, but affects the way many social movements are structured and work. The essays in this volume illuminate how globalization is caught up in social movement processes and question the boundaries of social movement theory. The book builds on the modern theory of social movements that focuses upon political process and opportunity, resource mobilization and mobilization structure, and the cultural framing of grievances, utopias, ideologies, and options. Some of the essays deal with the structure of international campaigns, while others are focused upon conflicts and movements in less developed countries that have strong international components. The fourteen essays are written by both well established senior scholars and younger scholars in anthropology, political science, sociology, and history. The essays cover a range of time periods and regions of the world. This book is relevant for anyone interested in the politics and social change processes related to globalization as well as social-movement theory. Mayer Zald is Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan. Michael Kennedy is Vice Provost for International Programs, Associate Professor of Sociology, and Director of the Center for Russian and East European Affairs, University of Michigan. John Guidry is Assistant Professor of Political Science, Augustana College.

Book Synopsis Islamic Development in Palestine by : Stephen Royle
Download or read book Islamic Development in Palestine written by Stephen Royle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the capabilities of an Islamic approach in aiding self-organisation by examining the case of the occupied Palestinian territories in conjunction with a comparative analysis of four other nations. Three main mechanisms of Islamic development are explored; finance, microfinance and charity. Identifying the need to recognise the non-linear nature of societal interaction at the individual, community and state levels, the book uses complexity theory to better understand development. It assesses the role of Islamic development at macro and micro levels and identifies issues with rigid and hierarchical policy making.
