Surely Peter MiMlyi knows where to place me in this taxonomy. For the most part I write my own irrelevant opinions, but there was one act of gross interference: my insistence on a point he had already quietly made, the greater stability of the production of consumer goods under Communism even of food, if we exclude bad harvests. The many Marxist and some other scholars who wrote about Dr. Mih

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout Central and Eastern Europe the future of the socialist economic system is being called sharply into question. This book represents an extension and consolidation of the programme of work begun by Janos Kornai in Growth, Shortage and Efficiency and examines the causes of the macroeconomic problems embedded in centrally planned economies which now face their reformers. Andras Simonovits asks three key questions: Why and how did investment activity fluctuate in the sixties? Why did the growth rate decelerate in the seventies? What was the reason for the stagnation of the eighties? The author constructs a series of analytic mathematical models of cycles and slowdown to explore these questions. The first part of the book is devoted to the investment cycles of the East European socialist economies and the negative effect of long comletion times and high net import ratios. Part II models the slowdown and stagnation of the post-1973 period and in particular changes in the efficiency of investment and the terms of trade. The results point to the failure of the socialist economices to adapt quickly enough to falling investment effectiveness and rising debt. Andras Simonovits rigorous and wide-ranging study is an important contribution to the literature on socialist economies and will do much to inform the debate over their transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume extends Michal Kalecki's investment cycle analysis into an integrated dynamic model of how levels of confidence affect investment decisions by entrepreneurs. Confidence is seen as susceptible to a range of factors, which alter over time to create different structures of investment at different periods of economic development. Using this susceptibility model, the author shows how corporate and governmental strategic planners can better design policies to mitigate the instability of investment patterns. Such policies are seen as capable of diminishing the aggravating effect that investment instability has on business cycles and employment in capitalist economies.

Deceptively familiar capitalist features disguise the profoundly unfamiliar foundations of "market socialism with Chinese characteristics." The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), by controlling the career advancement of all senior personnel in all regulatory agencies, all state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and virtually all major financial institutions state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and senior Party positions in all but the smallest non-SOE enterprises, retains sole possession of Lenin's Commanding Heights. The chapters in this volume examine China's high savings rate, banking system, financial markets, financial regulations, corporate governance, and public finances; and consider policy alternatives the CCP might consider if its goal is China's elevation into the ranks of high income countries."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy remains one of the greatest works of social theory written this century. When it first appeared the New English Weekly predicted that for the next five to ten years it will cetainly remain a work with which no one who professes any degree of information on sociology or economics can afford to be unacquainted.' Fifty years on, this prediction seems a little understated. Why has the work endured so well? Schumpeter's contention that the seeds of capitalism's decline were internal, and his equal and opposite hostility to centralist socialism have perplexed, engaged and infuriated readers since the book's publication. By refusing to become an advocate for either position Schumpeter was able both to make his own great and original contribution and to clear the way for a more balanced consideration of the most important social movements of his and our time.

Due to costs associated with the massive bailout of financial institutions deemed "too big to fail," on-going armed conflicts, and a move towards socialism, another even bigger bubble is about to burst – the debt bubble. The Great Super Cycle: Profit from the Coming Inflation Tidal Wave and Dollar Devaluation is an intriguing look at the relationship between Washington and Wall Street; the history of political shifts in power and how those shifts influenced the global economy; and, the ways investors can profit as economies move away from U.S. dollar and debt. The book: Discusses how a socialist America will result in the U.S. economy becoming far less competitive, while causing funds to move offshore Details how investors can profit by investing in gold, oil, and Asian markets Explains major cyclical movements from the mega cycle of world power to stock market cycles which last 10-20 years. As the United States begins to deal with its massive debt bubble, The Great Super Cycle just might prove the most powerful tool an investor has for making money in the turbulent years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialist planning played an enormous role in the economic and political history of the twentieth century. Beginning in the USSR it spread round the world. It influenced economic institutions and economic policy in countries as varied as Bulgaria, USA, China, Japan, India, Poland and France. How did it work? What were its weaknesses and strengths? What is its legacy for the twenty-first century? Now in its third edition, this textbook is fully updated to cover the findings of the period since the collapse of the USSR. It provides an overview of socialist planning, explains the underlying theory and its limitations, looks at its implementation in various sectors of the economy, and places developments in their historical context. A new chapter analyses how planning worked in the defence-industrial complex. This book is an ideal text for undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in comparative economic systems and twentieth-century economic history.
