Book Synopsis The Social History of the American Family by : Marilyn J. Coleman
Download or read book The Social History of the American Family written by Marilyn J. Coleman and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 2111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American family has come a long way from the days of the idealized family portrayed in iconic television shows of the 1950s and 1960s. The four volumes of The Social History of the American Family explore the vital role of the family as the fundamental social unit across the span of American history. Experiences of family life shape so much of an individual’s development and identity, yet the patterns of family structure, family life, and family transition vary across time, space, and socioeconomic contexts. Both the definition of who or what counts as family and representations of the “ideal” family have changed over time to reflect changing mores, changing living standards and lifestyles, and increased levels of social heterogeneity. Available in both digital and print formats, this carefully balanced academic work chronicles the social, cultural, economic, and political aspects of American families from the colonial period to the present. Key themes include families and culture (including mass media), families and religion, families and the economy, families and social issues, families and social stratification and conflict, family structures (including marriage and divorce, gender roles, parenting and children, and mixed and non-modal family forms), and family law and policy. Features: Approximately 600 articles, richly illustrated with historical photographs and color photos in the digital edition, provide historical context for students. A collection of primary source documents demonstrate themes across time. The signed articles, with cross references and Further Readings, are accompanied by a Reader’s Guide, Chronology of American Families, Resource Guide, Glossary, and thorough index. The Social History of the American Family is an ideal reference for students and researchers who want to explore political and social debates about the importance of the family and its evolving constructions.

Book Synopsis From Generation to Generation by : S. N. Eisenstadt
Download or read book From Generation to Generation written by S. N. Eisenstadt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998. This is Volume IX of the fifteen in the Sociology of Gender and the Family series and explores age groups and social structure from generation to generation. The purpose of this book is to analyze the various social phenomena known as age groups, youth movements, etc., and to ascertain whether it is possible to specify the social conditions under which they arise or the types of societies in which they occur. It is the m ain thesis of this book that the existence of these groups is n o t fortuitous or random , and that they arise and exist only under very specific social conditions. The authors have also attempted to show that the analysis of these conditions is not only of purely antiquarian or ethnological interest, but that it can also shed light on the understanding of the conditions of stability and continuity of social systems.

Book Synopsis Families and Their Social Worlds by : Karen Seccombe
Download or read book Families and Their Social Worlds written by Karen Seccombe and published by Allyn & Bacon. This book was released on 2008 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text applies a sociological imagination to explore both the private, personal side of family life as well the public, institutional nature of "the Family." It shows that many family concerns are actually social issues that need to be addressed through sound social policies. The author, Karen Seccombe, encourages students to think about families beyond their own personal experiences, and even beyond family structure in the United States. Her goal is to impart a passion for critical thinking as students see that families exist within social worlds. Families and Their Social Worlds shows that our conceptions of families are imbedded within our social structure, and that families represent a set of rules, regulations and norms that are situated in a particular culture in a particular historical time. Important policy considerations are imbedded in each chapter to illustrate what is currently being done, and perhaps even more importantly, what can be done to strengthen families and intimate relationships.

Book Synopsis Family and Civilization by : Carle C. Zimmerman
Download or read book Family and Civilization written by Carle C. Zimmerman and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family and Civilization is the magnum opus of Carle Zimmerman, a distinguished sociologist who taught for many years at Harvard University. In this unjustly forgotten work Zimmerman demonstrates the close and causal connections between the rise and fall of different types of families and the rise and fall of civilizations, particularly ancient Greece and Rome, medieval and modern Europe, and the United States. Zimmerman traces the evolution of family structure from tribes and clans to extended and large nuclear families to the small nuclear families and broken families of today. And he shows the consequences of each structure for the bearing and rearing of children; for religion, law, and everyday life; and for the fate of civilization itself. Originally published in 1947, this compelling analysis predicted many of today’s cultural and social controversies and trends, including youth violence and depression, abortion and homosexuality, the demographic collapse of Europe and of the West more generally, and the displacement of peoples. This new edition, part of ISI Books’ Background series, has been edited and abridged by cultural commentator James Kurth of Swarthmore College and includes essays on the text by Kurth, Allan Carlson, and Bryce Christensen.

Book Synopsis Social Development and Family Changes by : Cristina Gomes
Download or read book Social Development and Family Changes written by Cristina Gomes and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents various studies that go beyond the mere opposition between macro and micro determinants of social and family changes. The cross-cultural, transdisciplinary and generational perspectives on selection of the partner, marriage, cohabitation, LAT relationships, divorces, ageing and interchanges, children, types of households, inheritance and construction of the domestic space contribute to deepen the analysis of diversity in families and their multiple interactions with cultural, demographic, economic, and social processes. The authors reveal the complex connections between the internal and external spheres of the family, the historical moments and contexts, the intergenerational experiences, the macro-structural processes and the individualsâ (TM) multiple possibilities of action, between the everyday decision-making and the changes in the familiesâ (TM) practices. Exceptional situations, such as catastrophes or economic crises, contribute to the diversification of the family and promote retrocession in gender equality. Crisis and war intensify female care and domestic work. Diversification implies that families are not adscripted to closed systems, determined automatically within also closed societies that portray family as a miniature reflection of social structures. Deconstructing this myth, most of the authors recognize family diversity and its variations in space and time. The understanding of the economic, social, cultural and demographic family processes and practices permits to relate population and society. The duplication of the life expectancy and the reduction of births by almost one half in entire populations worldwide lie behind marriage markets, reproductive practices, generational availability, coexistence probabilities, intergenerational exchange and new and different familial arrangements. Increases in life expectancy and changes in the timing and number of children lead social actors to reconsider gender and generational roles; the solidarity among generations has another background and acquires different meanings; although there has been an increase in gender equality, it has come with an increased social inequality within the countries and among them. Demographic processes are an inherent part of social processes, and the age structure of the populations constitutes the human and biological basis for the analysis of social behaviors that these populations choose to reproduce, as well as for the understanding of the differences in the distribution of resources into and between countries, genders, generations and social groups.
