Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Social Problems, Policies, and Programs offers a comprehensive analysis of the policies used in the United States to address social problems and to develop the nation's social welfare programs. Leon Ginsberg provides a framework for understanding some of the country's most controversial issues, including welfare assistance and welfare reform. He suggests practical ways in which individuals and groups might implement more-beneficial programs for the disadvantaged. To update the volume's first edition, Ginsberg has expanded on the six-component model - history, social problems, public policy, description of programs, policy analysis, and policy practice - that defines social welfare policy and services. He has incorporated information about policy changes in the "Contract with America" that have been enacted by the 1995 Republican-led Congress. Ginsberg also has included supplementary models for policy analysis and new references and materials from the nineteenth edition of the Encyclopedia of Social Work.

Book Synopsis Social Problems and Public Policy by : Lee Rainwater
Download or read book Social Problems and Public Policy written by Lee Rainwater and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1974 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deviance is by definition a social problem. Since deviant behavior violates the normative expectations of a given group, deviance must be regarded as a problem for that group, since all groups of people want their norms to be enforced. Many modern societies place considerable value on personal liberty, so much so that interference with personal choices to deviate from group norms can be justified only in terms of the potential damage that particular kinds of behavior might do to the legitimate interests of others. Sociological research suggests that the social problem associated with deviance is often the behavior of individuals who violate norms cannot be justified in terms of basic values of liberty, social order, or justice. In other kinds of deviance, though, the social problem is that people or, in a more organized way, social institutions, interfere with individual liberty and self-realization. Each selection in this volume has been chosen to cover a full range of substantive problematic issues, a range of social science perspectives that can be brought to bear on issues of all kinds, and a range of social science methodologies used in studying modern society. Deviance and Liberty is divided up into thirty-nine contributions and five main parts ranging from "Modern Perspectives on Deviance and Social Problems"; "Deviant Exchanges: Gambling, Drugs, and Sex"; "Deviant Personal Control: Illness, Violence, and Crime; Deviance, Identity, and the Life Cycle"; and "Moral Enterprise and Moral Enforcement". It is a welcome addition to the libraries of those interested in the study of deviance or society as a whole.

Book Synopsis Global Social Problems by : Victor George
Download or read book Global Social Problems written by Victor George and published by Polity. This book was released on 2004-11-19 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this major new textbook, Vic George and Robert Page provide an original and much-needed introduction to global social problems and the emergence of a global social policy response. In an increasingly globalized world, it is inevitable that many of the social problems which have so far been seen as national in character will assume a global character. Global social problems are those which cannot be confined within national boundaries and which need both national and international attention if they are to be ameliorated. Pollution of the atmosphere is a stark example of this process. Global Social Problems begins with a discussion of the contested concept of globalization. Then eight of the most important global social problems are explored and explained by leading experts in environmental degration, international poverty, crime, AIDS, drugs, family violence, racism and migration. The book also includes chapter which explores the global social policy implications of these developments. With suggestions for further reading and accessible style, this book will be essential reading for undergraduate students in the social science, particularly those studying social policy, sociology and politics.
