The chapters of this volume arc selected from lectures given during the past two years at Harvard, Chicago, and Boston Universities, and from papers read before the American Social Science and the National Educational Associations. The point of view is in all cases social rather than scholastic, and the ideas emphasized are as worthy of consideration by parents as by teachers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Development and Education In Part I of this volume, I have attempted first to describe the typical attitudes which the child tends to assume toward the persons with whom he comes into contact in the ordinary situations of daily life, and to explain these attitudes in view of certain fundamental principles of mental development. To this end I have presented the results of observations of children's reactions under a variety of social conditions, the aim being to detect if possible the "natural" or impulsive tendencies in their responses. Then, in the second place, it has been my purpose to trace the changes in the child's adjustments to people which seem normally to occur in the process of development. This has required a mode of procedure in which the individual is followed from infancy to maturity along the several routes which lead to efficiency in social adaptation; and the ever-present question has been whether the child would on his own initiative follow these routes, or whether if left to himself he would stop on the way, or turn off in other directions. It has been my constant effort to note the actual tendencies of the child at different stages in his evolution, without regard to prevailing popular or theoretical conceptions of what he is or what he ought to be or to do. I have undertaken in Part II certain phases of the difficult and interminable task of outlining a plan and method of education designed to make the individual socially efficient. My point of view might properly, I think, be said to be that of the naturalist rather than that of the logician or philosopher, or even the moralist or idealist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Education As suggested above, the experiences described are quite incomplete and fragmentary. Even so, they may be of considerable service to the reader who cares to habituate himself to the social point of view in education. A critical sketch of three famous schools is begun in Chapter III. This is followed by descriptions of school work, which are not meant to represent perfection of either method or attainment, but which, it is believed, succeed in showing some features of the social spirit more completely than do the three examples studied in Chapters III, IV, and V. The two chapters on self-organized group work aim to show the more general features of social organization in the school. The concluding chapters of the book take up some special themes of education and attempt to show to what extent their best teaching depends upon a recognition of social facts. Still another one discusses, in lectures that are printed, the social phases of Education in the School and Home. Here are several chapters of experience - Classical, Euro pean, American, recently presented to the public at large by members of the faculty. This Teachers College is far more than a local foundation. It is resorted to by many school officers from a distance. Quite recently in a southern city it became important to establish a training place for the teachers of that large community. The first thing was to send those who were to be in charge of the school to the Teachers College for suggestion and guidance. At the present moment in another southern city there is a great normal institute fashioned upon the older models and the man agers of it are considering whether it is not possible to recast its work and its courses of instruction upon the models here set forth. Not long ago a party of southern gentlemen, eager to awaken their compatriots to a love of public schools, came here for inspiration. Book Synopsis The Boy Problem by : William Byron Forbush
Download or read book The Boy Problem written by William Byron Forbush and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy Problem: A Study in Social Pedagogy The author, who is both a clergyman and a Doctor of Philosophy, has been among boys and done work with them that I consider hardly less than epoch-making in significance. Dr. Forbush understands the natural boy and how to approach and handle him, and has also put himself abreast of the new psycho-genetic and pedagogical literature. The great fact of adolescence with all its multifarious phenomena and its stages of transformation might almost be called nature's regeneration. For a few years before this, boys live with their mates and adjust themselves as best they may to the will and way of the adult Olympians about them in the persons of teachers and parents, whose lives and ideals seem strange and alien to them. But when the ephebic reconstruction begins, one of its most radical changes consists in opening the soul to influences that come to it from riper years. Instead of a horizontal expansion of interests in boy life, the soul now reaches upward and is intensely sensitive to what the coming years are to bring; so that this age is the golden period of adult influence, provided it is wise enough not to offend.
