Book excerpt: Many school districts around the world are considering the adoption of K-12 International Baccalaureate Programmes. Clearly, when looking at changes of this magnitude, it is useful to evaluate other schools and school districts that have implemented similar programs. What exactly are the strengths and weaknesses of a K-12 International Baccalaureate Programme? As an educator and parent, I wanted to know how IB could affect schools. So I undertook a study to determine the academic, economic, political, cultural, and physical impact an International Baccalaureate programme has on a school.

Book excerpt: Recognized by universities throughout the world, the International Baccalaureate (IB) is a college entrance examination that students can take in any country. A school that adopts the IB curriculum ensures that its academics are brought up to international standards. Over 500 U.S. high schools currently participate in the International Baccalaureate program. As the IB concept gains ground with students, parents, and teachers in North America, Supertest tells two illuminating stories: how the IB program came to be and eventually reached the United States, and how it came to be implemented at Mount Vernon High in Alexandria, VA. The book provides insight into how ideas first conceived by a small group of educators in Switzerland eventually helped improve a typical American public school.

Book excerpt: The perfect accompaniment for any student, parent or educator involved in the International Baccalaureate. The book is broken down modularly, to provide guidance for everyone, from novices to the programme, to experienced IBDP coordinators. Chapters include: choosing subjects, internal assessments, IB school profiles, revision tips, university application advice and much much more. Written by exceptional IB graduates turned educators. The book has been written both as a reference for those new to the programme, as well as students and educators in IBDP1 and IBDP2. At EIB Education, we have supported thousands of students at hundreds of schools around the world, and given hundreds of talks and presentations to all stakeholders within the IB ecosystem. This book is the result of countless conversations, questions answered and infinite hours of conversation in our office about the merits of the IB programme, and how best to approach it, as a student, a parent or an educator. Students: We hope this will not be something you read once and consign to the dustiest corner of your bookshelf! Instead, we hope to have insights relevant to all stages of your IB journey, from selecting your IB subjects to life after the IB, with plenty of key information targeting every point in an IB student's life- managing IA deadlines, deciding on an Extended Essay topic, how on earth to revise for six subjects at once, to name but a few. Parents: An IB education is a wonderful gift, and can open doors for your children forever, but there's no getting away from the fact that the IBO exists in its own world, much as does any all-encompassing education system. Use this guide to become au fait with the IB before your child, or children, embark on their IB adventure, but be sure to check back throughout the years to remind yourself of any key terminology and to stay on top of their upcoming deadlines. IB Educators: Whether you are a seasoned IB educator, or a teacher moving to the IB system for the first time, we hope you are as enthusiastic about IB teaching methods and the IB programmes as we are! We hope to have created an IB Guide you can dip in and out of throughout your time as an IB Educator, with sections you can pass through to your students and others which you may find informative yourself. If you feel there are further IB queries we have not tackled in this edition of the IB Guide, please do let us know, and we will be sure to address these in later revisions.

Book excerpt: "In Thinking About Thinking in IB Schools: How We Know What We Know, Robin J. Fogarty and Brian M. Pete use the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the rigorous curriculum of International Baccalaureate (IB) schools as a framework for exploring the metacognitive skills and behaviors teachers must nurture in 21st century learners. Fogarty and Pete explain that, in order to address the driving question of TOK-"How do we know what we know?"-students must be skilled communicators, mindfully reflective, and caring of others, and possess other attributes of the well-rounded learner. In order for teachers to help students develop these qualities and enhance their learning, Fogarty and Pete structure the book around seven think links, or attributes and associated behaviors, that lead to critical, creative thinkers and problem solvers"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the dynamics of curriculum policy processes involved in the adoption, production and enactment of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It addresses deficits in current literature and provides insight into and the complexities involved within a framework that takes cognisance of the relationships between global, regional, national and local levels of education policy processes. In doing so, it contributes to the current body of research on international education, remote education and policy processes. The IBPYP is one of the three programmes that go to make up the increasingly popular suite of programmes offered by the IBO. Given the exponential growth of international schools caused by an ever changing globalized world and a mobile workforce, international curriculum policy is becoming more complex. This has lead to a recognition of the need for a range of policy analysis studies in the field. The study presented in this book was conceptualised in the light of such recognition. This relatively uncharted field has been explored by focusing on one of the most ‘unusual’ settings. Accordingly, the adoption, production and enactment of the IBPYO at three remote international schools has been examined. The study also addresses how the phenomena of ‘international schools’ and ‘remote schools’ complement or compete with, each other. This results in a better understanding of the educational policies informing both ‘international schools’ and ‘remote schools’ and the interconnectivity that might exist between them.
