Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a snowy forest, a small animal with pure white fur is munching on evergreen branches. It is a snowshoe hare. When it's time to move on, the hare hops over the forest floor with ease. Its huge feet act like snowshoes and keep it from sinking in as it moves along the snow-covered ground. Its white coat helps it blend in with its snowy habitat, keeping it safe from predators. Filled with information perfectly suited to the abilities and interests of its primary-grade audience, this colorful, fact-filled volume gives readers a chance not only to learn all about snowshoe hares and how their bodies are adapted to the extreme cold, but also to develop their powers of observation and critical thinking. Built-in activities, such as guessing how a snowshoe hare stays camouflaged when the snow melts in spring and finding objects that weigh the same amount as a baby hare, give readers a chance to gain, insights beyond the facts and figures.

Topics are as diverse as the students, who represent virtually every department, school and college at OSU. The environmental issue that is described in each chapter is particularly important to the author, who hopes that their story will serve as inspiration to protect Earth for all life.

Book excerpt: This modern Christmas classic highlights how animals are just as curious as kids about their own Santa. When Big Snowshoe tells Little Snow that the animals’ Santa is coming with presents for everyone, Little Snow wants to know who he is. The animals say they have never seen him. Maybe he’s a badger, a moose, a polar bear, or a wolf, they tell him. But this spunky little rabbit thinks they are just fooling him. On Christmas Eve, Big Snowshoe finds a way to see the animals' Santa and a Snowy Owl in a red cap swoops down with a pack full of presents. Never again will an excited Little Snow doubt that there is an animals' Santa. Jan Brett's love of animals, winter, and all things Christmas is on grand display in this original holiday story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The boreal forest is one of the world's great ecosystems, stretching across North America and Eurasia in an unbroken band and containing about 25% of the world's closed canopy forests. The Kluane Boreal Forest Ecosystem Project was a 10-year study by nine of Canada's leading ecologists to unravel the impact of the snowshoe hare cycle on the plants and the other vertebrate species in the boreal forest. In much of the boreal forest, the snowshoe hare acts as a keystone herbivore, fluctuating in 9-10 year cycles, and dragging along secondary cycles in predators such as lynx and great-horned owls. By manipulating the ecosystem on a large scale from the bottom via fertilizer additions and from the top by predator exclosures, they have traced the plant-herbivore relationships and the predator-prey relationships in this ecosystem to try to answer the question of what drives small mammal population cycles. This study is unique in being large scale and experimental on a relatively simple ecosystem, with the overall goal of defining what determines community structure in the boreal forest. Ecosystem Dynamics of the Boreal Forest: The Kluane Project summarizes these findings, weaving new discoveries of the role of herbivores-turned-predators, compensatory plant growth, and predators-eating-predators with an ecological story rich in details and clear in its findings of a community where predation plays a key role in determining the fate of individuals and populations. The study of the Kluane boreal forest raises key questions about the scale of conservation required for boreal forest communities and the many mammals and birds that live there.

Book excerpt: * 2021 Vermont Book Award, Winner. * 2021 New England Book Awards, Finalist. * A3C Reads: March 2023 Book of the Month. "A Most Anticipated Book of 2021" —Elle, Bustle, BuzzFeed, Vulture The Hare is an affecting portrait of Rosie Monroe, of her resilience and personal transformation under the pin of the male gaze. Raised to be obedient by a stern grandmother in a blue-collar town in Massachusetts, Rosie accepts a scholarship to art school in New York City in the 1980s. One morning at a museum, she meets a worldly man twenty years her senior, with access to the upper crust of New England society. Bennett is dashing, knows that “polo” refers only to ponies, teaches her which direction to spoon soup, and tells of exotic escapades with Truman Capote and Hunter S. Thompson. Soon, Rosie is living with him on a swanky estate on Connecticut’s Gold Coast, naively in sway to his moral ambivalence. A daughter—Miranda—is born, just as his current con goes awry forcing them to abscond in the middle of the night to the untamed wilderness of northern Vermont. Almost immediately, Bennett abandons them in an uninsulated cabin without a car or cash for weeks at a time, so he can tend a teaching job that may or may not exist at an elite college. Rosie is forced to care for her young daughter alone, and to tackle the stubborn intricacies of the wood stove, snowshoe into town, hunt for wild game, and forage in the forest. As Rosie and Miranda’s life gradually begins to normalize, Bennett’s schemes turn malevolent, and Rosie must at last confront his twisted deceptions. Her actions have far-reaching and perilous consequences. An astounding new literary thriller from a celebrated author at the height of her storytelling prowess, The Hare bravely considers a woman’s inherent sense of obligation—sexual and emotional—to the male hierarchy, and deserves to be part of our conversation as we reckon with #MeToo and the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court confirmation hearing. Rosie Monroe emerges as an authentic, tarnished feminist heroine.

Book excerpt: A sweet STEM introduction to the concept of seasons and animal adaptation Lily, a young snowshoe hare, is surprised to notice the leaves changing color in her forest home. She hears from the other animals that "Winter's coming," but who-- or what--is Winter? As Lily learns the ways in which her forest friends prepare for winter's arrival, she becomes more and more worried about what she should be doing. Finally, the brown bear points out that Lily has been preparing without even knowing it: her fur is thickening and turning white to help her camouflage in the changing weather. Complemented by illustrations in a mix of collage, drawing, and digital montage, this story introduces the many ways in which different animals adapt to survive winter.

Book excerpt: An internationally bestselling comic novel in which a man—with the help of a bunny—suddenly realizes what’s important in life “Escapism at its best . . . Just pure fun.” —NPR.org “Which of us has not had that wonderfully seditious idea: to play hooky for a while from life as we know it?” With these words from his foreword, Pico Iyer puts his finger on the exhilaratingly anarchic appeal of The Year of the Hare, a novel in the bestselling tradition of Watership Down, Jonathan Livingston Seagull, and Life of Pi. While out on assignment, a journalist hits a hare with his car. This small incident becomes life-changing: he decides to quit his job, leave his wife, sell his possessions, and spend a year wandering the wilds of Finland—with the bunny as his boon companion. What ensues is a series of comic misadventures, as everywhere they go—whether chased up a tree by dogs, or to a formal state dinner, or in pursuit of a bear across the Finnish border with Russia—they leave mayhem (and laughter!) in their wake.

To see months of training culminate in a spectacular run, and finally see the rabbit coming full throttle straight for you. And to see him almost frozen in an instant of time as the shot connects and he tumbles into three inches of fresh snow; that is what rabbit hunting is all about." It's hard not to agree. Written by one of the country's most renowned cottontail hunters, this guide will give you all the necessary strategies and cottontail facts you need to get out there and experience this fun for yourself. Providing thirty years' worth of trial-and-error methods, tips, and techniques for consistently taking cottontails, this book explains everything from how to hunt rabbits in bad weather and why they "hole up" to training beagles and tips for hunting with a small pack of hounds. Author Dave Fisher has been involved in hunting and the outdoors since he was a child. For over thirty-three years, he has raised and trained hundreds of dogs, mostly beagles, for hunting rabbits.
