Book Synopsis Small Islands in Peril? by : Colin Filer
Download or read book Small Islands in Peril? written by Colin Filer and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2024-07-11 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the idea that small island communities could be regarded as canaries in the coal mine of sustainable development because of scientific and anecdotal evidence of a common link between rapid population growth, degradation of the local resource base, and intensification of disputes over the ownership and use of terrestrial and marine resources. The authors are all anthropologists with a specific interest in the question of whether the economic and social ‘safety valves’ that have previously served to break some of the feedback loops between these trends appear to be losing their efficacy. While much of the debate about economy–society–environment relationships on small islands has been overtaken by a narrow focus on the problem of climate change, the authors show that there are many other factors at work in the transformation of island lives and livelihoods.
Book Synopsis Social Capital, Resilience and Adaptation on Small Islands by : Jan Petzold
Download or read book Social Capital, Resilience and Adaptation on Small Islands written by Jan Petzold and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the role of social capital regarding its potential to increase small islands’ adaptive capacity to climate change. The case study of the Isles of Scilly, UK, shows how social structures can play a very important role for climate change adaptation. It is argued that social features have to be understood in a non-deterministic and potentially ambivalent manner, according to their place-specific geographical, cultural and historical context. Only then, risk management and adaptation strategies can succeed and function in a sustainable way. The findings have relevance for the further refinement of social capital theory and social emergence. Combined with the perspective of resilience, this approach is also relevant from a policy standpoint, given that small islands have been identified as hotspots not only due to their vulnerability, but also because they serve as examples for media and politics to advance the agenda of environmental protection. >

Book excerpt: This book aims to clarify the present situation of the relations between small island countries and territories on the one hand and the great powers, mainland areas, and mega-islands on the other, and explores how small island countries and territories preserve and build their identity under globalization. This book is divided into five parts. The first part presents papers on issues that are related to Okinawa: the American military presence, the formation of a global human network, and the history of and language revitalization in Okinawa. The second part includes papers on security in East Asia and the Pacific Region: the history of and present issues in international relations within the South and East China Sea areas. The third part presents papers on economic issues and social developments on small islands. The fourth part deals with ocean policies and marine resource management in the Pacific Region by the United States, Australia, and Japan. Finally, the fifth part presents papers on the revitalization of three indigenous languages. All the chapters of the book are based on the achievements of the research project “Towards New Island Studies: The Ryukyus as an academic node between East Asia and Oceania” conducted by the International Institute for Okinawan Studies at the University of the Ryukyus. This 5-year project was funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and aimed to contribute academically to the creation of sustainable and self-determinable societies in small island regions. This work will be extremely useful and informative for readers in small island countries and territories and for researchers who are interested in small island issues to understand the current situation and who wish to consider effectual and feasible solutions.

Download or read book Lessons From the Political Economy of Small Islands written by NA NA and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small islands often enjoy a distinct juridical personality. Many, whether fully sovereign or not, successfully deploy this "gift of jurisdiction" to economic advantage, offsetting the potentially adverse effects of smallness, isolation and peripherality. These legal powers, reflected in supportive policy and culture, are themselves key economic resources in a development strategy. Globalization can be richly asymmetrical, offering lucrative opportunities for differentiation and nice strategies for small island jurisdictions. This book documents such lessons from a most unlikely group of North Atlantic Islands.

Book Synopsis Dealing with climate change on small islands: Towards effective and sustainable adaptation by : Carola Klöck
Download or read book Dealing with climate change on small islands: Towards effective and sustainable adaptation written by Carola Klöck and published by Göttingen University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small islands have received growing attention in the context of climate change. Rising sea-levels, intensifying storms, changing rainfall patterns and increasing temperatures force islanders to deal with and adapt to a changing climate. How do they respond to the challenge? What works, what doesn’t – and why? The present volume addresses these questions by exploring adaptation experiences in small islands across the world’s oceans from various perspectives and disciplines, including geography, anthropology, political science, psychology, and philosophy. The contributions to the volume focus on political and financial difficulties of climate change governance; highlight the importance of cultural values, local knowledge and perceptions in and for adaptation; and question to what extent mobility and migration constitute sustainable adaptation. Overall, the contributions highlight the diversity of island contexts, but also their specific challenges; they present valuable lessons for both adaptation success and failure, and emphasise island resilience and agency in the face of climate change.

Book Synopsis Food Security in Small Island States by : John Connell
Download or read book Food Security in Small Island States written by John Connell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a contemporary overview of the social-ecological and economic vulnerabilities that produce food and nutrition insecurity in various small island contexts, including both high islands and atolls, from the Pacific to the Caribbean. It examines the historical and contemporary circumstances that have accompanied the shift from subsistence production to the consumption of imported, processed foods and drinks, and the impact of this transition on nutrition and the rise of non-communicable diseases. It also assesses the challenges involved in reversing this trend, and how more effective social and economic policies, agricultural and fisheries strategies, and governance arrangements could promote more resilient and sustainable small island food systems. It offers both theoretical and practical perspectives, and brings together a broad range of policy areas, e.g. agriculture, food, commerce, health, planning and socio-economic policy. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable resource for a range of disciplines in a number of regional contexts, and for the growing number of scholars and practitioners working on and in small island states. It will be of particular value as the first book to examine the diversity and commonalities of island states around the globe as they confront issues of food security.
