Book excerpt: Everyone knows disciplemaking in churches is important - vital, even. But how do we move from good intentions to real transformation? Drawing on LICC's engagement with thousands of UK churches and his decades of experience as a church leader, Ken Benjamin offers 20 ways to put whole-life discipleship at the heart of our churches - 20 vital signs of disciplemaking life. Together, they'll help you grow a culture that equips people to live out their faith in every part of life, not just through church activities. The key is not to add to our stretched to-do lists, but to permeate everything we already do with new, refreshing perspective. Whole-life disciplemaking should be embedded rather than added, built in rather than bolted on. When this happens, the effect is life-changing - not only for congregations and church leaders but for the individuals, organisations and places they seek to serve. Vital Signs works in tandem with LICC's online assessment tool, training videos and resources to help leadership teams assess, embed and maintain whole-life discipleship in the churches they serve. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the largest churches in the world are cell-based, many have questioned whether the model will work in North America. The Church In Many Houses: Reaching Your Community Through Cell-Based Ministry makes the case that the cell model will work— if key assumptions about spiritual growth and the nature of the church are reexamined and renewed. By drawing on scripture, research, and insights gained through personal experience as the pastor of a growing cell church, Steve Cordle identifies the four pivotal philosophical shifts necessary for the cell approach to work. These are mindset shifts that move from: programs to relationships—the purposes of the church are best fulfilled in the cell group instead of in programs member to disciple-maker—every member can and should become a group leader educating to equipping—spiritual growth is not knowing more but applying more “come and see” to “go and show”—the power of penetration evangelism. Impose a cell structure upon a congregation that has not yet made these philosophical shifts we are likely to fail. But when people adopt these biblical mindset changes, the cell approach will seem natural, and will result in great unity and effectiveness. The Church In Many Houses will help congregations make the changes that are necessary for success.

Book excerpt: Rediscover—or discover for the first time—the things that make you passionate in life Vital Signs is about what inspires passion and what defeats it. How we lose it and how we get it back. And ultimately it’s about the endless yet endlessly fruitful tug-of-war between freedom and domestication, the wild in us and the tame, our natural selves and our conditioned selves. Each chapter in Vital Signs will contain a core sample, an intimate biography of one of the strategies we employ to gain or regain our passion. The book also affirms the importance of courageous inquiry into dispassion—where we’re numb, depressed, stuck, bored—so the reader can recognize and change these tendencies in themselves.

Book excerpt: Small business is the heartbeat of the U.S. economy, the primary source of jobs, and the backbone of the nations well-being. In order to help the American economy recover from the recession, the country urgently needs to dramatically boost its rate of small business creation. This dissertation studied Lebanese small businesses in the United States, focusing on the factors associated with their success, in terms of sustainability and annual after-tax income, and the perception of their contribution to society and the economy. A quantitative analysis of data gathering from 62 survey participants revealed that the success of Lebanese-owned small businesses was attributed to their human resources, operational management, management attributes, economic health and government regulations, and owners personal traits. All these factors interacted to generate higher-dollar orders and helped businesses sustainability. In addition, this study might also help newcomers to the field seeking to develop their own business plans. Other factors pertaining to the success of Lebanese small business owners were also examined and discussed within the framework of minority and enclave theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the parking lot to the exam room, doctors can improve the physical surroundings for their patients, yet often they do not. Given the numerous and varied duties doctors must perform, it may fall to the design profession to implement changes, many based on research, to improve healthcare experiences. From location and layout to furnishings and positive distractions, this book provides evidence-based information about the physical environment to help doctors and those who design medical workspaces improve the experience of health care. Along with its research base, a special aspect of this book is the integration of relevant historical material about the office practice of physicians at the beginning of the twentieth century. Many of their design solutions are viable today. In addition to improving the physical design of healthcare facilities, author Ann Sloan Devlin is the granddaughter, daughter, and niece of physicians, as well as the granddaughter and daughter of nurses. She worked in a hospital during college, and has visited a good many practitioners’ offices in medical office buildings and ambulatory care settings. This book addresses an overlooked location of care: the doctor’s office suite.
