The "First Version" was given as a paper on "Small Christian Communities in the AMECEA Region: An Evaluation of their Growth and Impact" at the 13th Interdisciplinary Theological Session on the theme "The Faculty of Theology of CUEA Celebrates the Golden Jubilee of AMECEA" at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Nairobi, Kenya on 3 March, 2011. Many papers were presented at this conference covering the 50 years of AMECEA under three headings: Part I: "Deeper Evangelization. Part II: "Formation and Education." Part III: "Church Life, Organization and Structures." I specifically treated the topic of "Small Christian Communities" under Part III. Many pastoral leaders including the AMECEA bishops recommended the importance of a thorough critical evaluation and assessment of SCCs to learn from the past and to help plan for the future. It is a practical theology where people reflect on their whole lives, personal and social, in the light of Christian faith, make commitments to action in light of that reflection, and hold one another accountable for those commitments."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small groups are a growing phenomenon in the United States both within and outside the churches. People in these groups are searching for community and spirituality and finding new life. Powerful and effective as these groups are they often fall short of the biblical ideal of "koinonia". The early church grew and prospered because their communities were small and their "communion" and their spirituality werc strong and deep. Catholic parishes today have grown large and impersonal, often lacking in the depth of their community, spirituality and commitment. Is it possible to take advantage of this modern small group phenomenon, expanding and deepening it, and thus revitalizing parish life and ministry, by making the parish into a community of small communities and recapturing some of the vigor of the early church? This thesis attempts to show that, with appropriate adaptations, the "Renew Process" was successful in the Diocese of Las Cruces, New Mexico, in creating vibrant faith communities in the parishes there through the introduction of the small Christian community concept while at the same time avoiding some of the shortcomings of the current small group phenomenon in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to pastoral care for pastors of small membership churches. "If you spend your whole life serving small membership churches and doing it well, yours will have been a life well spent." Small membership churches have a real advantage when it comes to incorporating people into a fellowship where they are known and where their needs are met. These churches and their pastors have an opportunity for excellence in this area, and should make the most of it. Good pastoral care can be the key to effectiveness in all of the other ministries of the church. From getting acquainted with your congregation, weddings and funerals, picking up on subtle cues in a conversation to not-so-subtle conflicts, Killen shares insights from years of ministry in a small membership church setting. James L. Killen, Jr. is a retired elder of the Texas Conference, contributor to Circuit Rider, and author of Who Do You Say That I Am? A Personal Reader.
