Book Synopsis Small Christian Communities and the Parish by : Vincent Dulock
Download or read book Small Christian Communities and the Parish written by Vincent Dulock and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small groups are a growing phenomenon in the United States both within and outside the churches. People in these groups are searching for community and spirituality and finding new life. Powerful and effective as these groups are they often fall short of the biblical ideal of "koinonia". The early church grew and prospered because their communities were small and their "communion" and their spirituality werc strong and deep. Catholic parishes today have grown large and impersonal, often lacking in the depth of their community, spirituality and commitment. Is it possible to take advantage of this modern small group phenomenon, expanding and deepening it, and thus revitalizing parish life and ministry, by making the parish into a community of small communities and recapturing some of the vigor of the early church? This thesis attempts to show that, with appropriate adaptations, the "Renew Process" was successful in the Diocese of Las Cruces, New Mexico, in creating vibrant faith communities in the parishes there through the introduction of the small Christian community concept while at the same time avoiding some of the shortcomings of the current small group phenomenon in the United States.

"If you spend your whole life serving small membership churches and doing it well, yours will have been a life well spent." These churches and their pastors have an opportunity for excellence in this area, and should make the most of it. Good pastoral care can be the key to effectiveness in all of the other ministries of the church. From getting acquainted with your congregation, weddings and funerals, picking up on subtle cues in a conversation to not-so-subtle conflicts, Killen shares insights from years of ministry in a small membership church setting.
