Book excerpt: Excerpt from Small Business and Employee Involvement; The Team Act Proposal: Hearing Before the Committee on Small Business, United States Senate, One Hundred Fourth Congress, Second Session, April 18, 1996 Chairman bond. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. We are going to proceed. Senator Bumpers has suggested we go ahead. This hearing today, before the Small Business Committee on the employee involvement in small business, the team Act, is going to be chaired by my good friend and colleague, Senator John War ner. Senator Warner has been a leader in the employee involve ment issue and I appreciate having someone with his expertise act as Chairman today. Unfortunately, I have several unavoidable scheduling conflicts. I am pursuing the increased deductibility for self-employed peo ple for health insurance on the Senate floor in the health insurance reform debate today, and it is very important. I also have a news conference or two that I have to crash this morning. SO I will not be able to stay for the statements and the opening testimony. I would state for the record that the Labor Committee had a markup of the team Act yesterday. The final vote on reporting it out was 9 to 7. I think it is very important for small businesses that we understand the impact of the team Act on small business before the bill goes to the floor. That is why we are holding this hearing today. Book excerpt: Running a small business provides opportunity for greater success, increased growth, and potentially the chance to move to the global business arena, yet also much more risk. Small businesses not only have less employment, but also less annual revenue than a regular-sized business. With the growth of large corporations and chain businesses, it has become harder to maintain the survival of a small business. The COVID-19 pandemic has also brought more pressure onto the already unsteady survival of small businesses, due to forced closures, decreased agility, fewer technological innovations, and smaller customer bases. The Research Anthology on Small Business Strategies for Success and Survival offers current strategies for small businesses that can be utilized in order to maintain equal footing during challenging times. With the proper strategies available to small business owners, small businesses could not only survive, but also excel despite the environment that surrounds them. Covering topics including decision management, new supportive technologies, sustainable development, and micro-financing, this text is ideal for small business owners, entrepreneurs, startup companies, family-owned and operated businesses, restaurateurs, local retailers, managers, executives, academicians, researchers, and students.

Ask any manager today and they will say their biggest concern is the competition for talented, good employees. The business costs and impact of employee turnover can be grouped into four major categories: costs resulting from a person leaving, hiring costs, training costs and lost productivity costs. The estimated cost to replace an employee is at least 150 percent of the person's base salary. As you can see, managers must learn to hire, train and keep your employees highly motivated. This book will help you to learn the fundamentals of sound hiring, how to identify high-performance candidates and how to spot evasions. You will learn to create a workplace full of self-motivated employees who are highly purpose-driven. The book contains a wide assortment of carefully worded questions that help to make the process more effective. Innovative step-by-step descriptions of how to recruit, interview, hire, train and keep the best people for every position in your organisation. This book is filled to the brim with innovative and fun training ideas (that cost little or nothing) and ideas for increasing employee involvement and enthusiasm. When you get your employees involved and enthused, you will keep them interested and working with you, not against you. With the help of this book, get started today on building your workplace into one that inspires employees to do excellent work because they really want to!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many managers are frustrated by a bewildering array of advice about what works in the workplace. This volume contributes to a growing consensus about effective workplace practices. The collection combines detailed studies of single industries (automobile assembly, apparel, and machine tools) with cross-industry studies of financial performance. The contributors find that systems of innovative human resource management practices can have large effects on business performance. Success does not come from any single innovation, but from a coherent system encompassing pay, training, and employee involvement. Although a majority of contemporary US businesses now have adopted some innovative work practices, only a small percentage of businesses have adopted a coherent new system. A concluding chapter outlines barriers to diffusion and discusses public policies to remove barriers and enhance dissemination of effective management.

Book excerpt: Only 15% of employees worldwide are engaged at work. This represents a major barrier to productivity for organizations everywhere – and suggests a staggering waste of human potential. Why is this engagement number so low? There are many reasons — but resistance to rapid change is a big one, Gallup’s research and experience have discovered. In particular, organizations have been slow to adapt to breakneck changes produced by information technology, globalization of markets for products and labor, the rise of the gig economy, and younger workers’ unique demands. Gallup’s 2017 State of the Global Workplace offers analytics and advice for organizational leaders in countries and regions around the globe who are trying to manage amid this rapid change. Grounded in decades of Gallup research and consulting worldwide -- and millions of interviews -- the report advises that leaders improve productivity by becoming far more employee-centered; build strengths-based organizations to unleash workers’ potential; and hire great managers to implement the positive change their organizations need not only to survive – but to thrive.
