Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball pioneer J. L. Wilkinson (1878-1964) was the owner and founder, in 1920, of the famed Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues. The only white owner in the Negro National League (NNL), Wilkinson earned a reputation for treating players with fairness and respect. He began his career in Iowa as a player, later organizing a traveling women's team in 1908 and the multiracial All-Nations club in 1912. He led the Monarchs to two Negro Leagues World Series championships and numerous pennants in the NNL and the Negro American League. During the Depression he developed an ingenious portable lighting system for night games, credited with saving black baseball. He resurrected the career of legendary pitcher Satchel Paige in 1938 and in 1945 signed a rookie named Jackie Robinson to the Monarchs. Wilkinson was posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006, joining 14 Monarchs players.

Book excerpt: The major themes explored in this book, originally published in 1986, are the political resonances of social stratification and change; the growing distance between the working class and the providers of social services; and the role of locality in social reproduction. The relationship between society and space is the subject of a major debate in developed countries. The key questions are about just how far spatial patterns and local conditions affect social relations and stratification and how far they shape collective action, electoral responses and class.

Book excerpt: The main aim of this poetry is to express some of the feelings that were created by the deadly Liberian civil crisis that led many dead, homeless and mentally disturbed, socially, morally, and economically imbalanced. The result of these conditions set heavy grief and frustration in my heart as the author of this book. Most of the poems have emotional tones because of the mood and personal experiences of the writer. However, these poems are intended to bring consolation and joy in the minds of its readers in order to let out bad feelings. I am aware that negative feeling, which includes anger, contempt, guilt and fear, must be minimized, if not eradicated in our daily lives.

Book excerpt: Timely re-issue of the groundbreaking manifesto for feminist architecture Making Space is a pioneering work first published in 1984 which challenges us to look at how the built environment impacts on women’s lives. It exposes the sexist assumptions on gender and sexuality that have a fundamental impact on the way buildings are designed and our cities are planned. Written collaboratively by the feminist collective Matrix, tthe book provide a full blown critique of the patriarchal built environment both in the home and in public space, and outline alternative forms of practice that are still relevant today. Making Space remains a path breaking book pointing to possibilities of a feminist future. Some authors worked for the London-based Matrix Feminist Architect’s collective, an architectural practice set up in 1980 seeking to establish a feminist approach to design. They worked on design projects—such as community, children and women’s centres. Others were engaged in building work, teaching and research. The new edition comes with a new introduction examining the context, process and legacy of Making Space written by leading feminists in architecture.
